Editorial Review
Strikingly modern and easy to use, this robotic floorvac includes an array of convenient features. Simply press the "clean" button and the unit will vacuum the whole floor, adjusting automatically to any floor surface including wood, tile linoleum, and low-to-medium pile carpet. The vacuum's artificial intelligence determines the room size and adjusts the run time to ensure that it cleans the entire floor. Integrated sensors detect dirt and will increase the focus and intensity of cleaning in that area, while infra-red cliff sensors in the non-marring bumper detect stairs to keep the unit from falling, as well as furniture and walls for cleaning right up to the edge.

The high-efficiency vacuum has a wide cleaning path and a three-stage cleaning system, which includes counter-rotating brushes that scoop large debris into the dustbin, plus a vacuum to pick up fine particles, dirt, and pet hair. This unit has one of the highest CPRs (coverage per room) in the industry and can get floors cleaner than conventional upright vacuums with the ability to clean where they can't, like under beds, couches, and other furniture. Its edge-cleaning spinning sidebrush, combined with wall-following technology, removes dirt and debris from the base of walls, from corners, and other hard-to-reach places. The vacuum's stasis sensor detects when it's stuck and employs pre-programmed escape routines to free itself, while setting up a virtual wall, an invisible beam of light, confines the unit to a designated area, great for one-room cleaning.

The vacuum's advanced power system consists of a fast-charging battery, a three-hour charger, and a power source--it supercharges the unit for up to 120 minutes of continuous cleaning. When the battery is low or it has completed a cleaning cycle, the vacuum automatically returns to its charging Home Base so that it will be ready for the next cleaning session. The bagless unit is designed with an easy-to-empty debris bin that is three times the size of other robotic floorvacs so it doesn't have to be emptied as often. Turning the vacuum on, selecting a cleaning mode, and sending it off to clean is easy with the included remote control. Convenient cleaning modes include MAX mode, which sets the unit to clean multiple rooms in one cleaning cycle or for 120 minutes of intense cleaning in a given room, as well as Spot mode, which sets the unit to quickly and intensely clean in a 3-foot diameter. Replaceable air filters prevent dust and dirt from escaping back into the air, and removable-by-hand brushes allow for quick, routine maintenance. A rechargeable APS battery, a three-hour charger, two "virtual-wall" units, three filters, a wall mount for convenient storage, and a remote control are included. The vacuum measures approximately 13 inches in diameter by 4 inches high and carries a 90-day warranty.

From the Manufacturer

The Roomba Robotic Floorvac has changed the way people clean their homes, and it's the number one selling robotic vacuum in the world. Now, the next generation of Roomba's are here: the Roomba Discovery Robotic Floorvacs. The Roomba Discovery line is designed to make cleaning more efficient and easier than using a traditional upright vacuum.

Roomba Technology
The Roomba Discovery Robotic Floorvacs utilize a 3-stage cleaning system. First, the spinning side brush cleans right along the base of a wall and in corners. Second, Roomba's two counter-rotating brushes scoop up large dirt and debris into the particle bin. Third, a powerful vacuum pick ups the remaining fine particles, dirt, and pet hair. Also, Roomba now has the built-in intelligence to automatically return to its self-charging Home Base when its battery is low or it has completed a cleaning cycle. This means your Roomba will always be charged and ready for its next cleaning mission.

A Roomba vacuums most home floor surfaces including hardwood, laminate, linoleum, low-pile carpet, medium-pile carpet, tile, slate, and other hard surfaces. Roomba is not designed for shag carpet. Roomba's compact shape (it measures 3.5 inches tall and 13 inches in diameter) allows it to clean completely under beds, couches and other furniture, so Roomba cleans more of your floor than standard uprights.

Roomba's integrated artificial intelligence allows the robot to determine the room size, and actually calculates how much time is needed to clean in a giving room.

Easy to Use and Effective Cleaning
To start with this vacuum is easy--just press the Clean button and Roomba vacuums the whole floor, moving from carpeted to hard surfaces seamlessly. Unlike standard vacuums, Roomba automatically manages uneven floor transitions up to one half inch tall as it cleans hardwood, carpet, linoleum, and tile.

Roomba can clean up to three 14- by 16-foot rooms before the Roomba Battery needs to be recharged. Roomba's Advanced Power System uses a microprocessor-controlled charging system to provide up to 120 minutes of cleaning power (run time may vary based on cleaning surface). The Roomba Discovery re-charges in under 3 hours.

Sensors in the non-marring bumper detect furniture and walls so Roomba cleans right up to edge of the wall and around furniture. Its infra-red cliff sensors detect edges such as stairs and keeps Roomba from falling. The included Virtual Walls keep Roomba from going where you don't want it to. These technologies allow Roomba to operate without having to move furniture or place a physical barrier to block Roomba into a room.

I have had three other discoveries all brand new and not remanufactured and had to return them all after a few months due to different problems.
I decided to give a remanufactured one a try and have owned it for over a year now and had zero problems with it. I use it twice a week on my 2700sq foot house and is my main floor cleaner.
I think the remanufactured ones have had the problems fixed and now are good to go and at a much better price. How great is that!

I bought a new Discovery iRobot for my temporary apartment at work, and it worked so well, that I decided to save a few bucks and buy a remanufactured iRobot for my home. The first rebuilt unit did not charge the battery and never did run. Amazon took it back and delivered an replacement. The second unit worked fine for the weekend. I left for a month on assignment and unfortunately did not read the warnings about not leaving the unit charging for extended periods without running it. Yep, unit would not run when I got back. I was past the 90 day warranty period, so ordered a new battery $70. I charged it for a day. Power button was green. It immediately turned red when the Clean button was pressed. 48 hours of charging still shows red. Charger puts out 22v so is prob ok. Cleaned battery contacts. No good. Unit is kaput. I will salvage parts to use in my one working unit. Too bad the new 500 series uses different battery packs and accessories. I will buy a new 500 series in the shortly. Gave only 2 stars cause although my remanufactured unit worked great, as my other one does, it quit, either due to my error, or whatever caused it to be returned in the first place struck again. New units are fantastic. Rebuilt units, well, that's my misfortune. My old rule of never buying used electronics will be reinstated after this lesson.

Ever since the Roomba came out a few years ago I expected it to be just another cool gadget that promises a lot be delivers little, in spite of the many positive reviews. My curiosity overcame my skepticism and I finally bought a Roomba. This thing works as advertised and I'm very pleased with its performance. It effectively picks up dog hair and dirt from all around my small home. Frankly, I'm amazed with its performance. I still use my big vacuum on occasion, but the Roomba works so effectively that the larger vacuum has very little to pick up.

The only real drawback is that the Roomba doesn't like the small rugs I have in a few places -- it tends to catch a corner of the rug and get stuck. As long as I pick them up before running the Roomba, however, I'm all set to go.

I was lucky. I bought this for about a third of what it is going for now. I received the Discovery. It came with the dock, 2 virtual walls, extra filters, wall hanging thing, and a battery. I had to charge my battery for 72 hours to get it to work longer than a half hour, but now it works fine. Additionally, because I wrote Roomba to complain, they are sending me another battery, too. They have excellent customer service.

I have wanted one of these for quite a while, but couldn't justify purchasing it. I assumed (correctly, as it turns out), that it would probably be just as fast to use my regular vacuum as it would be to use this one. I actually LIKE cords and am not too fond of cordless, rechargeable appliances although I realize that they do come in handy.

I have seen so many people talk about why they purchased this, but nobody's mentioned the reason I did and why I am so glad I did. We have a huge heavy wooden antique bed. It's huge. And, it's so heavy that it cannot be moved. I can't gauge weight really well, but this thing weighs a ton. And, I cannot get under it to vacuum it at all. I purchased a smaller vacuum that had a handle that moved all the way to the floor thinking that this would work and I'd be able to get under there, but it didn't have strong suction, and I couldn't get the cat fur and dust removed. I have combed the carpet with my fingers as far as I could reach, but I knew there was a large area in the center that had never been vacuumed (yuck!). So, I capitulated and finally bought the Roomba.

After ensuring that the roomba would have a free rein in my room (removing all cords, pulling out side tables, etc.), I let the vacuum do its thing. And, it did! It cleaned my room for about 2 hours-- much of it, I'm sure, vacuuming under my bed. And, gosh, the amount of hair and fur it picked up was truly embarrassing. To think we were breathing some of that! Anyways, my carpet seemed the cleanest its been in years. I am so incredibly impressed with this vacuum cleaner.

I've used the Roomba elsewhere, too, but for most areas, I really prefer the regular vacuum. Not because it's better, mind you, but because it's just easier-- I don't have to remove all the cords, set up the virtual walls, or anything-- I can just vacuum. But, still, if I continue to use this only in my bedroom, it will have been worth the purchase cost.

The first day I got this little robot, I followed it around and wasted alot of time...but the novelty has worn off and it does save me time. It is helpful with my 2 year old who drops a million crumbs and my pet parrot. I use it almost every day. It is a bit noisy, but it is a vacuum cleaner, so I guess that makes sense. It does not seem to hold the charge for longer than 1 hour, even though it is supposed to work for 2 hours? Sometimes it gets stuck wedged on the wall or other strange position, then the battery drains. Overall, I do like it.

4 Star Rating  "Great cleaning buddy - but dog hair hard to untangle"2007-09-21
- Reviewed By allisonallison
I have enjoyed this a lot, though it's not great at keeping up with my Golden Retriever's long hair that gets wound up in the brush. I have to use a seam ripper to cut the tightly wound hair after most uses, and then spend about 5 minutes on the deck cleaning and untangling. Also have to block off the area under the armoire where the stereo cords are inclined to get tangled up if "my little cleaning buddy" gets under there. But it's still a great product and makes cleaning up fairly entertaining as my little buddy helps get the dirt and crumbs that build up under the table and and in the grooves of the tile floor. It's less sweaty than hauling my canister vacuum all around the house. After reading about the battery problems some others have had, I have emailed Amazon about how to replace the rechargeable battery which has finally died, so if I can get that replaced, I will be happy.

Shortly after I bought this item I gave it a good review; and I suspect that most of the good reviews probably directly relate to a new experience. Give this thing a good six months plus and you will start to see it for the gadget that it is. It's a bit impressive at first because it does brush the carpet and pick up a few surface objects. After a little while you start to realize that what you have bought is a complicated electric brush for your carpet. And then it starts to malfunction (in spite of cleaning, following the instructions on charging, etc.). Let's face it- the physics involved should tell you that it has neither the mass nor the horsepower to be a very effective vacuum; and you will ultimately feel disappointed when you realize that you are never really going to get any kind of real return on your investment.

Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on this overpriced grown-up toy disguising itself as a useful household tool. Get a real vacuum that will really clean your carpet. I've got an old Kirby that cleans like heck and I've long since got my money out of it. If you want to make your life easier, get a self-propelled model (got one of those too now). When you do the math on the money you'll see. Also, it's really not that much of a time saver. It's nice to think that something else is doing the work for you, but you have to clean the brushes after each cleaning and by the time you fool with all that you could have just plugged in the real vacuum and did the job for real. I wanted to believe- I really did; but I'm sorry Virginia, there is no Vacuum Claus...

I was nervous ordering a Remanufactured Roomba, unsure of the model and the quality of the product. After getting it, I couldn't be happier. I ended up with a Sage with one or two scratches on the face. As for the quality, the roomba does an excellent job cleaning my house. I was surprised the first time I ran it and it ended up pushing dust around my carpet, little did I know how much dust was under my furniture. It filled up very quickly the first time I ran it in each room, but subsequent runs go smoothly. I am very interested in purchasing another one, or possibly a scoomba. Great experience!
