Here is what people are saying about the Shure E3c-n Sound Isolating Earphones (Black)

I ordered these ear buds, thinking that I was going to find the pair that finally settled the argument of the best brand/model... but I am left feeling disappointed and a little irked. First off, the cord that they use for these is REALLY rigid and stiff... it barely flexes, especially in the cold. So once you put the ear buds in, one wrong turn of the head, or one jostle the wrong way and they come loose and fall out. So during normal listening periods... even when I just sitting at my desk at the office, the maximum length of time that I can wear them without having to reseat them in my ears, is about five minutes.

Additionally, despite the myriad of various bud adapters that they included in the package, I have not even managed to find one that both fits and also is comfortable... I found one that is comfortable... but it doesn't fit in well enough to isolate sound properly... and most of them fit alright, but become very uncomfortable to wear for long periods... some of the adapters are outright disorienting, because there is no way that they'll fit with wedging them into your ears with more force than I'd like to be required to use.

As far as the sound goes, I am not completely pleased with that either... I think that overall they output a cold and overly treble laden sound. They don't have the depth of bass and warmth that I prefer. Don't get me wrong, the range of sound is broad and clear... but their overall sound is not my taste... to me, it's too sterile.

So yeah, I really don't get what all the buzz is about. The only really nice things about them is the fact that they seem to be constructed (aside from the rigid/non-flexible cord) quite solidly. They feel when you hold them like they'd be quite rugged and difficult to damage, but then again... I have only had them for about a week, so I doubt that this initial assessment would be a good one to follow as gospel.

I ordered the Shure E3c but was sent, without notification, the Shure SE210. Perhaps the SE210 is better, but it seems pretty sleazy to send a different item without asking the buyer. It was not Amazon that made the switch; the order came from Electronics Expo.

I have these as well as the E2 version. I use these daily at the gym 5 days a week as well as well as when walking or jogging. I've had these for several months and here are my results:

2. Bass: The key is getting the proper fit, and I suspect most people that are not getting good bass have not properly fitted the buds.

3. Getting a proper fit. Several bud covers come with the package. Try each style to insure a tight fit deep into the ear canal.

4. Getting the flanges to fit: I also found the yellow and silicone covers didn't fit and fell out of my ear. So I tried the flange tips. Initially, they were too long to fit in my ear canals. I found that I could snip off one piece of flange on each side and they fit. I also found that if I slightly moisten each flange before inserting into the ear, and then slip them in with a clockwise motion, they seat properly and do not fall out.

4. Maintenance: The flanges, especially, with the deep fit in the ear, can collect ear wax, so these tips can be cleaned carefully. The flanges seem to last forever. A flange replacement kit can be also purchased from Amazon for about $12. It's important to wind up the wires and place the phones back into their case after each use.

5. Placement when in use: Though the Shures can work hanging by down in front, as well as behind the head, I find that mine work best when I wrap behind the ear. The wire is sturdy enough so that even at the gym (working out or running), the wires remain in place.

Cost? It's a matter of "you get what you pay for". It's nice to have an electronic device with a 2 year warranty, and that can be worth the price, as evidenced by other customer comments about warranty service.

6. Sound blocking: When the tips are properly inserted, nearly all outside sound is blocked, even voices from people standing beside you. Ambient sound is virtually blocked. Just be careful if you wear these while walking or jogging outdoors.

7. Airplane: I used the pair I have with the flanged tips when I flew on a business trip, and virtually all jet noise was blocked.

8. Sound quality: I tend to listen to all genres of music, and I have been satisfied. I can adjust the equalizer on my Samsung MP3 to chnage sound response.

Cons: Not really any. It took me a while to get used to how to insert and properly wear these phones. I suspect that most customers that have any issues just don't take the time and effort to get a proper fit. I'd recommend any of the Shure line that has the flange tips that fit.

These headphones have better noise cancelling but the sound quality is not as good as the E3c-n series.

1 Star Rating  "Unauthorized substitution of merchandise"2008-12-16

The retailer substituted another model (SE210) for the E3-c's I ordered. I was not consulted regarding the substitution. I realize the newer model could be considered a technical substitute for the model I ordered, but good business practice would have been to notify me the model I ordered was unavailable, and to ask if I would agree to the substitution. I am not pleased with the seller. I cannot in good conscience recommend them.

I was torn between these and the new SE210s. I used to own a pair of these and loved them. And that first pair was $200, and well worth it. Also owned a pair of e2-c's. Always preferred the sound and the feel of these over the e2-c. At present Amazon prices, the cost of these e3-cs are about the same as the old cost of the e2-c's, so the value is there. br /br /When comparing these to the SE210s, I opted for these for two reasons:br /1. These were familiar to mebr /2. The new SE210s have a short cord and an extension cordbr /br /The short cord is ideal if you place your mp3 player around your arm at the gym. I don't do that with my iPod classic, so I didn't want to deal with a second cord connection. br /br /Also, it should be noted that these e3-c's are shipping under their new name, SCL3. I ordered these e3-c and received a SCL3. They are the same headphones. Reading message boards I've discovered that the SCL3s have one new set of foam earbuds that the e3-c's didn't, so rest assured if you buy some e3-c's and get an SLC3 instead.
