Eric Carle was the art director of an advertising agency before Bill Martin Jr. asked him to illustrate a book of his. I think his work feels like the work of an ad. executive too--it has a distinctive artistic style, but is really not very original. His stories are bland and unexciting, and mostly forgettable. He is certainly not one of those children's authors like Dr. Seuss or Arnold Lobel or David Wiesner that adults can actually enjoy when they read them to kids. Carle's an unoriginal thinker who's never made a single stylistic variation from his original aesthetic, and whose stories are just lazy--a caterpillar becoming a butterfly? Four identically structured books about what a bear sees and hears? Kill me.
There are exceptions, I think, to his general lameness--The co-written VERY GREEDY PYTHON has a unique ending, and there are one or two others--but he doesn't deserve the hype, and his books are best-suited for the very, very young, so board books only.
Oh, and MISTER SEAHORSE is not one of the great ones. It's pretty bland, if you ask me.
"Beautiful pictures with information about sea life"
My grandaughter loves the ocean and sealife. She is only 4 years old so finding a fun but informative book is hard. This book was a hit with her. Eric Carle really writes and illustrates the most wonderful books for children.
I purchased this book when my baby was 2 months old. The story is wonderful, and my baby's father found it fun for him to read. An over sized book, yet not heavy. colorful pages with easy to read passages! my baby is now 7 months and upon seeing the book he becomes very excited and wants to be in arms so that he can tear it apart. I am very anxious waiting for when he will be reading ME the book :) (his favorite thing to do with the book is touch the inside cover pages with all the little seahorses.)
Mister Seahorse Incomparable children's author Eric Carle takes on animal fatherhood in this book which is not only filled with his signature illustrations, and not only about animal fatherhood, but also zoologically accurate. Mr. Seahorse, carrying his eggs in a pouch in his belly, meets a number of other male fish - such as the Stickleback and the Tilapia - who are also caring for their eggs on their own. A wonderful - and truthful - way to introduce children to some of the devoted fathers of the animal kingdom. Mr. Carle's illustrations are engaging as always, and children will especially enjoy spotting the other fish who are hiding along Mr. Seahorse's way.
This book is beautifully illustrated, and written simply enough for the target audience-kids! The other lesser-known fathers brought to attention in this book make it an informative read for both adult and child, without getting technical or losing child's attention. The artwork is breath-taking, the see-through pages and the colors used create the illusion of being right there in the ocean with mr seahorse.
