"Fast but somewhat complicated" | 2009-08-24 |

This filter works very fast, filling a 1L bottle in about a minute. However, getting to that point can be a chore. There are a lot of small parts and hoses and input versus output and caps and attachments...etc... I'll give Katadyn credit, they certainly give you a lot of parts, various attachemnts for bottles and water bags, even extra parts if you want to cut your water bag hose and add in the easy fill attachment. That's nice. But this means a lot of small, extra parts that serve to confuse, espcially if you are using it for the first few times. However, once you get it all figured out, it pumps just fine, and fills bags and bottles fast. It takes longer to set up the pump than it does to fill your bottles, but it gives a nice clean taste.
Overall I'd recommend it, but learn how to set it up before you go into the wilderness. Also, take just the pieces you need, because keeping all the extra parts with the unit will either lead to confusion, or lost parts! |

| This was a lifesaver on a recent backpacking trip. I'm glad I returned the cheesy filter in a waterbottle I purchased at Walmart. This was well worth the extra money. Worth every penny. |

"Great Product With One Annoying Detail" | 2009-07-14 |

There are lighter alternatives for water purification, but iodine is not recommended for people like me with thyroid disease, and this filter is still relatively lightweight, easy to use, and easy to share. Water moves both while pumping up and down, and the action is smooth and easy. I have used this at 3 different backcountry water sources so far without getting sick.
The main drawback is that it's a little clumsy to both work the pump and balance the container, and I've accidentally dropped a water bottle into a creek. It includes connectors for connecting directly to a hydration bladder, but it expects 1/4" inner diameter tubing, and all the bladders I have found use larger diameter. I finally found this bladder which has tubing too large, but has compatible connectors that I can make work with some extra tubing from the hardware store. I'll be trying it out on my next trip in a couple weeks, and hopefully that will help with the clumsiness issue. If anyone knows a better bladder to use, please leave a comment.
Just a quick warning about the moral hazard of using gear like this. When you can filter as much water as you want, it's easy to think you're safe and abandon a little caution. I had to backtrack a half mile on my last trip because a water source I was aiming for turned out to be dried up for the season, but I passed up a perfectly good source because I still had a little water left. A half mile isn't a big deal, but it could have been a lot worse if the distance had been longer.

| Do not buy this filter. The small inlet spout on the bottom of the filter breaks off with the slightest tap. We purchased the Katadyn Pro for a trip to the BWCA and after three days of use this part broke off. We tried super glueing it back but were unable to get a perfect seal and thus had only minimal pump quality after that. Upon returning, talked to the people at REI and learned that our experience with the pump was fairly common. So, we upgraded to an MSR ceramic. Wrote to Katadyn about the problem but have yet to get a response. |

"Packable, Easy to use (with three hands), Satisfying" | 2009-06-23 |

We used this filter for the first time on a two-day backpacking trip. Although the Steripen seemed like a great idea for size and speed, we were concerned about the threads on our bottles being contaminated by dipping in the water source. Although larger, this filter is similar in price, so we gave it a shot.
Its weight was a plus, and it was easily packable in its thin nylon zipper-case. Operation was simple: just drop the input hose into your water source and pump the handle. It's helpful to have a third hand to hold the output tubing in your canteen, unless you have a perfectly flat surface on which to stand the bottle.
As for output, it was really fast, and tasted just like you would imagine a clear mountain stream should taste. Definitely pleased with this purchase. A satisfying piece of equipment.
Of note, microfilters do not generally protect you from water-borne viruses. Know the risks of where you are traveling. |
