| After reading other reviews, I decided to go with this toaster because it is one of the few which had the cool-touch exterior feature. The only problem I have had is when I try to toast a long piece of sourdough bread. I prefer this type of bread to be toasted well and my old toaster actually did a good job there, but it was a regular sized toaster and I had to cut the slices just to fit them in. This toaster on setting of 3.5 to 4, burnt the very edges of the slices. Even on 3, the edges were burnt, but the rest of the toast was perfect. Using regular white bread, the toast is evenly toasted, even toasting 4 slices at a time using a setting of about 2. I'm not much of a bagel toaster and so cannot give an opinion on how this toaster works on this type of bread. Overall, I am satisfied with the Cuisinart, and if I have any further opinion good or bad, I will add it later. The cool touch exterior is definately a plus for me. I am surprised at how many toasters don't have this feature and I would have considered some of the other brands. |

| My old toaster died...I loved it. It matched my kitchen (white), stayed cool (a must for a klutz!) and had one long opening so I could toast just about anything. Went searching the web, but started with Amazon.com, and never got any farther! Found the Cuisinart, which has all the features of my defunct toaster, and some added ones. I like the back-lit numbers that tell you how quickly your toast will brown (burn!)...makes it look like it has blue eyes. Also makes it easy to remember to unplug it when finished. Besides its charming appearance, it allows you to select toasting two slices or four, and has a button to cancel toasting and a lever that lifts the toast up above the level of the toaster. No more burned fingertips! From a "basics" point of view, it makes darned good toast. Buy it in confidence. |

| I had a single slot Cuisinart toaster for about 10 years before it died (circuit board failure). That toaster was the best toaster I ever had with simple electronic controls that seemed "intelligent" and seemed to make perfect toast every time from bread, bagels, english muffins, waffles, each frozen or not. I was sad to see it go. I was doubly sad to find that they no longer manufacture that toaster so I bought this as a substitute. The controls on this new toaster are mechanical - a selection dial (for toast, bagel, reheat, defrost), push buttons (labeled 4 slice or 2 slice to heat both slots or the front slot only), and a darkness dial. I have several problems with this toaster that leads to my less than enthusiastic evaluation. In general, I find that it is hard to find the "sweet spot" to get consistent browning from this toaster - the toast is either underdone or burnt. The side of the toast that is against the center element is invariably more done than the side facing the outer element. The 2/4 slice option sounds like it should add energy efficiency to the appliance but in the implementation, both sides of the center element light up so only one side of the second slot ends up de-powered. The numbers on the darkness dial are lit up with a blue (LED?) light that casts a too-bright blue glow in our kitchen at night after turning out the lights (may be a feature for those who want a free night light with their toaster but I find it intrusive). If I did not know and love the previous model then perhaps I would not be so sensitive to the weaknesses of this toaster - so your mileage and impression may differ from mine. I am just struck by how much better the toaster from 10 years ago was than this current model. Oh well. |

Long slice burns black on the ends and golden in the center. Doesn't Cuisinart check these products before they go out for sale? Nice features that don't matter if it can't do the one thing I ask...make decent toast! Should have gone with the more expensive (and massive) Kitchen Aid even though I would need to add counter space. |

"It DOES make toast" | 2008-03-08 |

I needed a toaster for a smaller space, and this is one of the few available. The drawback is that the description didn't mention that it is not to be used under a cabinet (how many kitchens don't have upper cabinets?). On the positive side, it DOES fit in my small space.
There are four edges inside that are a challenge to clean out, but the pull-out crumb tray is great.
The bread is not toasted evenly, but I have figured out using level 2 about 1 1/2 times gives the best results. Maybe at that level, I'm saving energy.
The toaster I replaced was twenty years old, so I'm used to some problems; and, hey, with a little work, it DOES make toast! |

"Definitely NOT like the former Cuisinart toaster!" | 2008-02-19 |

| We had worn out our old Cuisinart 4-slice toaster and replaced it with this toaster because it is the same style, same type. What a HUGE disappointment. There are 6 settings (#1 & 2 Light, #3 & 4 Medium, #5 & 6 Dark). The toaster just warms the toast on setting #1. On the next setting #2, it toasted unevenly, burning the toast because the toaster heats much hotter in the center. Our old Cuisinart toaster was extremely reliable and toasted evenly, plus the slots are large enough to toast bagels. I wish I had listened to the other reviews and bought another toaster. Save yourself some grief and hassle and buy another brand. |

| This toaster is junk. You have to just set it very low and keep checking. Settings are 6-1, but 3 comes out like charcoal. It always burns the edges of wide bread if the center is anywhere near toasted. Although it is supposed to hold 4 slices of average sized bread, the slots are actually a bit too short to toast 4 slices of anything but the narrowest bread so if you want any more than one slice you have to use it on the 4 slice setting. On the 2 slice setting one of the heaters that should be off comes on anyway. The side of the bread facing the inside is never as well done as on the outside even when it is not on the bagel setting. The bagel setting seems like the heat is reversed from what you would expect: that the split side of the bagel would face the inside of the toaster so the inside should be hotter, but it's the outside that toasts hotter, not the inside, which means anyone not familiar with this toaster messes up their bagel. I expected more from such an expensive toaster. |

| Depending on what we want to toast or defrost--regular bread, pitas, or bagels--this toaster does a great job on settings one through three. HOWEVER, the heating coils in one of the slots are starting to die and I've only had the appliance for just over a year. |
