My niece is on a big fairy kick, like ...many young girls these days. And of the presents I've gotten for her in recent times, this is one of her favorites. This is great for imaginative play, really. Educational if educating the imagination is what's needed. It also means a lot to her to be able to bring a doll into the pool and play with it, and have that be the "normal" play for the doll, because she can't do that with the other dolls.
Until I get her more of these. As there's more, it seems.

"Cute doll, but doesn't work so great" | 2006-08-17 |

| Well, I am a bit disappointed with this doll. The water has to be ICY cold to get the hair & body art to change. I even had ice in some cold water and it still didn't work that well. I did find putting her on the central air vents made her change pretty quickly, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the doll. The body art fades quickly once taken out of the cold water too. That said, my daughter does still really like this doll. |

I have to say that these dolls ARE pretty. Not beautiful, just pretty. They are certainly more for three-year-olds then fourteen-year-olds, because of their bright crazy colors. I'm sure that if I was three, I'd be thrilled by these dolls and beg for one of them to add to my tubby toy box.
But I'm not three. I'm fourteen. So I'm writing my reveiw from an older girl's perspective. Just to let you know before I start, I still really like barbie dolls and I collect them, but always debox them. I give them new clothes and fix thier hair in unique styles and name them. I have alot of them too. So I am something of a barbie expert.
Okay, on with the review. This is for all the Mermaidia dolls, including Elina, Shella, Nori, and Merissa. I watched the Barbie Fairytopia: Mermaidia movie about a month ago and absoulutly adored it. Finally, the girls are rescuing the prince, instead of the other way around. But the dolls are another story.
Now, to start, here is the reveiw for the Elina doll: Okay, the first Elina doll from the first fairytopia movie had too much makeup on. But the second Elina doll from the second fairytopia, her amount of makeup is outrageous. Look at around her eyes, what do you see? Practically a fourth of her face is covered in pink and blue! The color of the makeup isn't soft like it should be, it's very loud. In addition to having waaaay to much makeup, Elina has on a molded top, arm decorations, leg decorations, and necklases. Meaning, you can't ever take them off of her. In addition, she doesn't look a thing like the Elina from the movie. Just like the first fairytopia Elina doll.
Shella does not appear in the movie, but she was probably originally going to. Mattel just rushed to get the dolls out before the movie was barely even started. Cheap. Anyway, Shella has the same problem with the molded top as Elina. But her makeup is not as outrageous. Shella also has a nice smile. But she has tattoos that appear and disappear when heat or cold is applied (I think). With all those tatooes on thier doll, won't little girls want to have tatooes on their own body's, just like Shella?
Nori is living (well, sort of) proof that Mattel rushed to get the dolls out before the movie. She doesn't even remotely resemble the Nori from the movie, not at all!! The only good thing I could find is that her molded top doesn't leave any of her stomach showing. Yay! Other than her that and her colors, she is the same as Shella. See above.
Merissa's semi-pigtails make her look younger (alright, alright, and cuter) than the others. Other than that and her colors, she is the same as Shella. See above.
One thing that all of the dolls have is the "tutu" on on them, going over their tails. Kind of odd, isn't it? Anyway, I hope my review was helpful to somebody. Overall, if you are an older collector, I wouldn't reccomend these dolls. If you are three years old and you are sure that you don't want tatoos, then go ahead and get one or two or three or all of these dolls. |

"Beautiful doll - not very durable!" | 2006-04-02 |

My daughter received this doll for her 5th birthday. She was so excited because she has always wanted a Mermaid Barbie but I could never find one. This year with the Mermaidia movie released, her and I were both thrilled to see Mermaid barbies on the store shelves! She loves the movie too. She loves playing with this doll, especially in the bathtub where you can change her haircolor and "bodyart". The hair changes color easily but the body art takes a while to get it to full and bright color.
My only complaint about this doll is the tail. My daughter had this doll all of one day before the fin snapped off the tail. It was the end of the world for my daughter. The fin part of the tail is very poorly made! I ended up buying a new one for my daugther and she was been so very careful with that tail. So far it's lasted almost 2 weeks. |
