I pirate all my manga, music, and lots of movies.
But mostly manga. ESPECIALLY manga.
And, because I'm a bit of an elitist jerk, I usually steer clear of 'popular' manga and anime because of the fanbases that tend to build up. We all know how overdone and played out POTC and TNBC have become, to where people judge you just for mentioning popular titles...
Anime and manga are no different, and for this reason I avoided Naruto like the plague.
Once I was finally convinced to begin reading it, i did so online first, because I refuse to spend money on a product that is possibly worthless. Well, the end result was me screaming through it, page after page, and eating it up like crack cocaine.
Shortly after beginning to read online, I started buying the manga for real, and am currently working on my collection as is. I've read far past what I have bought, but that won't stop me from collecting all the manga. I like to read in the bathtub, too, not just online.
If you avoid this manga because it's popular and the fanbase scares you away- give it a chance!
It's funny as hell, has a unique storyline and the characters are likeable. The art style is clean, somewhat generic, but not too 'balloony' or sparkly-detailed like some manga are(I often find those to be a little off-putting). The actions scenes are a bit hard to follow at times and move very fast- but hey, they're ninjas.. ninjas are fast. It's excuseable.
~~
The characters in all are very attractive personality-wise. Things are exaggerated because it's an anime, but for the most part interaction and character development is really good, realistic. You can relate to many of the characters' desires and struggles.
The plot is action-filled and entertaining, and there are no boring parts that you sometimes encounter where you skip through an action scene or breeze through the text bubbles. You WANT to read, and see, and know. You root for your favorite character, and go all 'ffff' at the ones you don't like.
The humor is fairly mixed- a bit of pervy stuff here and there with the Sexy-no-Jutsu(oh help me I lol'd like an idiot) but otherwise great. Somewhat risque, but not inappropriate. It's not intended to be hentai or ecchi, just shock-value perversion, and it doesn't come along very often. If you're a really conservative parent, don't buy this for your child. I'd recommend it for teens and pre-teens.
Aside from the occasional semi-ecchi slip, there are sequences which really are amusing, and certain characters's sense of humor are pretty funny. As in most naime, lots of amusing faces are made at times.
The fight scenes are okay, and there's a bit of blood here and there, but nothing awful or gruesome. Again, it's realistic(as far as anime goes) and isn't superfluous.
I even got my mother to read a few volumes and she enjoyed it so far as much as she has my MARS collection.(why, I cannot fathom, but still, she likes it)
In all, it's one of my favorites now. Added to the shelf with the few other series that managed to capture this pirate's appreciation. It's worth the buy if you're looking for something new, fun, and action-filled. It's a lot more than just ninjas hopping around doing ninja stuff, and once you buy one, you'll have to have more.

| This was the first manga I ever read (as well as the first anime I watched), so it naturally holds a special place in my heart. And I still love it. The manga is definately better than the anime, and if you're looking for a well-written manga with detailed, excellent artwork--I'd highly recommend Naruto! |

If you're one of the many `Narutards' religiously following the anime, you won't see much of a difference between that and Masashi Kishimoto's original work (though you wouldn't be a true Narutard if you didn't read it). If anything, the manga leaves some gaps the anime fills in, especially in action scenes. And the renaming of ninja techniques will still piss off purists. It's still worth it to read about Kishimoto's experience with the manga in the brief snippets and concept art wedged between each chapter. Believe it!
This comic is rated T for Teen: Graphic Violence. |

Aficionados of pop culture can't make it through the course of a day without hearing/seeing reference to 'Naruto.' After putting off this series for years I finally decided to give this one a shot and blazed through Volume #1 of Masashi Kishimoto's seminal 'Naruto' manga series.
First impressions left me semi-interested. The story and concept is intriguing enough to keep me going at least a few more volumes to gauge whether or not I'm going to plow this series in its entirety. As fas as art goes my main complaint is that the action sequences (long fight chapters) can be difficult to follow at times. Also, based on this 1 book the overall tone feels seems to skew toward a younger audience so keep that in mind if you're wondering whether or not to take a chance with this series. |

Six years ago I began watching the Naruto series in Japanese with English subtitles.
Six years later I still keep up with it, and now I've started to invest in the manga series.
This first book is brilliant. The art, the storyline, the characters. It is the beginning of an era, and while I remember being slightly bored by this series until the Chuunin exams, I now find these first novels to be entirely captivating. You'll meet Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura; you'll love these characters and witness their first challenge of gratuating school and becoming full-fledged ninja.
There will be scenes in the manga that didn't make the anime, and things in the anime that didn't make the manga. All in all I think it's a worthy to invest in them both. In between each chapter you will find concept art and meet the writer behind the series.
Buy this series. If it doesn't captivate you immediately have no fear because I initially felt the same way. You soon will. |
