I got a Tom Tom 910 for Christmas. I used it when I traveled out of town. I really loved it, but I put it away and didn't use it for a few months because I didn't go anywhere.

When I needed it it wouldn't start. I reset it. I charged it. I reset it again. Called Tom Tom customer service. They made me reset and recharge and then told me the battery was dead. They said that I could return it for repair, and I asked how much would that cost. Answer - more than a new unit! I asked if I could buy a battery and they said the battery COULD NOT BE CHANGED!!!!!!!! So basically I used it a couple of dozen times and then threw it out.

I won't buy another GPS that has a permanent battery.

This GPS is the best! I purchased mine refurbrished, it froze during the first times I turned it on. I hit the reset button on the back and havent had any problems since. This tom tom is turely the best though.

TomTom GO 910 4-Inch Portable GPS Navigator

Bought the 910 about a year and a half ago. Stopped working so I followed on-line suggestions to no help . Want to meet the engineer who located the reset hole on this puppy. Even the tech rep admitted it was an embarassement. Techie told me I probably left it on the dock too long without using. Where said I is that in the product information (it's not)

Sent it back (under warranty) and while I waited bought a NUVI. No comparison, the NUVI is much more intuitive and user friendly. Tom Tom replaced it with a "refurbished" unit. Didn't even bother to use it until tonight when I gave it to my daughter to use on a Fourth of July junket. Problem is the replacement unit is "home based" in Kinsale Ireland. Some nice travel photos were included though. Followed on-line instructions. tried to download fix through cell phone as recommended. Ireland centered unit doesn't recognize my Verizon cell.

Set up the home docking station outside with an extension cord and tried to re-set unit with my laptop on-line. 20 minutes later-No good. Tried to call "customer support". Their hours are now 8:30 to 7:00. Hey Tommy Boy what happens if you have a problem with your navigation unit outside bankers hours?

I'll be on the phone tomorrow but my daughter will be gone on her trip. Ironically, I'll be in Kinsale next week. Maybe I'll try to find the prior owner and we can go over his photos. Hey maybe when he returned his unit he got my Amityville, NY defective unit in exchange. Wouldn't that be a pub story?

Whether I go to Ireland, New England or locally, I'll put my trust in NUVI. What kind of quality control department sends out a replacement unit without testing it or re-setting it. What kind of International marketing outfit that sells vehicle navigation units does not provide access to 24 hour customer support?

I've owned both Tom Tom and NUVI, and how do you think I'd answer that question?

I got one of these pieces of junk for my birthday a year ago - I think it has worked a total of once. First, the mounting arm does not keep the product at an angle where it can be viewed. I contacted TomTom and they told me that my mounting arm was not part of a recall of mounting arms - so I had to buy a new one. I did - twice - neither worked. I called TomTom again and they told me that the mounting arm frequently malfunctioned when the temperature was over 80 degrees - I live in Texas - the temperature is over 80 degrees 6 months of the year.
Next, I had to constantly restart the TomTom - it seemed to not like to work for more than a couple of hours at a time. Then, yesterday, I tried to restart it and nothing happened so I boxed the whole thing up (3 docking arms and all) and mailed it back to TomTom. Save your money - get a Garmin!

I purchased the 910 2 years ago when I was in the US. I had to buy a new one because my first one was stolen out of my car.

IMPORTANT TIPS

1. Do not leave your Tom Tom in your car.
2. Do not leave your Docking station fixed to the window.
3. Wipe off the ring that the docking station leaves behind.

ALL OF THESE MISTAKES ARE WELCOME SIGNS FOR THIEVES!!!!!!!.

I am in the military, and now live in Europe and the Tom Tom takes me were i want to go. I have used it in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, and the Netherlands with out a single problem. I have to say the best feature on the 910 is the built in 20G hard drive (it is actually only 11G once everything is updated), but that is still a lot of music and pictures. Next I would have to say the warnings for the traffic cameras has saved my @ss sooo many times. Tom Tom has just changed their software for hooking up the Tom Tom to the computer so I am getting used to it. Their are only 2 down sides to this product, and they arent all that bad.

1. When my phone is connected to the Tom Tom, and someone calls it uses the internal speaker instead of my car speakers. It works fine when playing music, or when the unit gives directions.

2. Tom Tom does not track the product code and product registration in their system, so if your Tom Tom is stolen, and some one else tries to connect it to the Tom Tom web site for updates or to remove the security feature, duplicate product registrations do not raise a flag on their end. A positive note however, is that Tom Tom will give you a pretty good customer discount if your product is stolen provided you fax them a copy of the police report and the sales receipt.

I purchased this unit in June 2007 specifically because it had a map of Europe preloaded. I brought the TomTom home 3 days before departure, charged the unit at home and then drove a day to get familiar with the controls. So far so good.

I packed the unit for my trip to central England where I planned to spend several days driving though the country. Mistake - to save weight I only took the car connecting stuff. Arriving in London, I installed the 910 in the rental car and set off on my trip. The TomTom has a nasty shortcoming - it powers ON when it senses power to the connector, but does not power OFF when the ignition is turned off. The three-hour battery (only 1 hour after 8 months) died overnight since the unit was still ON when I parked. Day two the unit was still dead after powering on the car. A call to TomTom was fruitless; I was on hold for so long my calling card expired. The unit was simply dead for the rest of my stay in England.

After exchanging the unit for a replacement, I have learned to tolerate the many faults that make this unit a less than pleasurable experience. (It's that or shell out more money for another brand)

* I purchased the unit in June and exchanged in July. The maps are hopelessly out of date. Here in California there are housing developments built in 2005 that are not in the US maps.

* I live in an unincorporated part of Orange County, California with a Santa Ana mailing address. TomTom 910 considers me to be living in the city of Orange. To be fair, I am about 200 feet from Orange city limits, but I do not live in Orange. This is not a GPS function; it is a map problem. TomTom support tells me "they are not responsible for the map data."

* The unit always announces, "You have reached your destination" when I am hundreds of yards short of my destination. In dense neighborhoods, this is often 2 to 3 turns short of my actual arrival point. Yes, the map indicates where I should be, but depending on the voice prompts it is a joke to ever reach the correct driveway or even the correct city block.

* []

* As many others have written the reset error is very disconcerting. Whenever the power runs down (a frequent occurrence when jumping out of the car with a load of papers or groceries), I need to bring the unit into the house and charge the device on its poor fitting desk stand. TomTom support has told me the car charger is "only to maintain a charge, but is incapable of charging a discharged battery.

* To press the reset requires a pin or needle. As a single guy, I often have neither. The reset button is too small to touch with a straightened paper clip.

* The power cord does not stay in the ugly docking cradle. To charge the unit I need to carefully balance the device on the cradle and tape the power cord in the stand. Oddly enough, the USB cable is permanently attached, but the dc cord is a very loose fit and often pulls out, leaving me with a dead battery even after an assumed overnight charge.

* Unlike my Garmin, the TomTom 910 cannot accept third party maps. I frequently travel in Mexico ad was able to buy a basic map for that county. No such availability for TomTom.

* Missed turns are quietly rerouted. The Garmin I am familiar with will announce, "Recalculating". Often, the best thing is to retrace my route until I am back where I should have been. TomTom does not indicate my mistake, and it has often cost me many miles to follow the new route to my destination.

* As I said, I bought the device in June 2007 expecting a year of free traffic subscription. When I contacted TomTom, they indicated the promotion ending at the end of 2006. This is also what the materials in the box indicate.

* Itinerary planning is what TomTom calls a multi stop trip. But, the 910 default is to make intermediate stops "waypoints", not "destinations." More than once, my girlfriend has driven right past her first stop with nary a peep from the TomTom since it was just a waypoint. (Other than to use alternative routing, why are waypoints necessary? Destinations should be the default setting.)

* The suction mount securely fastens to the window however; the weight of the 910 requires a "pillow" under the unit to hold it from falling towards the dashboard.

There are some positive aspects to the 910"

* The street announcement is a very nice feature, one my girlfriend really appreciates. Newer upline models from most manufacturers also have this feature.

* The Bluetooth is a great hands free device for my cell phone; first a Motorola Razr and now a Blackberry Curve.

* I have never tested the picture storage, not sure why I would want to see a slide show of family photos while I drive.

* I also have never used the mp3 feature. Why would I listen to music from the built-in speaker when my car has a multi-speaker set-up? And no, my car 2007 car does not have an auxiliary audio input jack.

* There are many voices in the GPS and more can be downloaded. Okay, I will admit on my first day on England (remember it only worked my first day) I did set the voice to a British accent. Since getting my replacement unit, I have never changed the voice.

In conclusion, I feel TomTom was out to sell a device with as many features as one could imagine into the 910. Sadly, they did a mediocre job of the most basic function of a GPS - fast and simple routing.

I received an email awhile back inviting me to apply to their advisory panel. I never heard back. I assume they reviewed my communications and only wanted positive voices heard.

Would I but another TomTom? Not unless I could get a 30 day trial. Most stores here in California give no more than 14 days to return a technology device.

Do I miss my Garmin Quest? No, I use it in my every day truck. I let the girlfriend use the TomTom.

Yes, I know the TomTom Go 910 is discontinued; but I write this review as personal therapy. Good Luck to anyone buying one on eBay. [...]

Mine died when I was locally traveling. Imagine if I had relied on it when traveling out of state as I did in 2007! I will never go out of town without a Mapquest printout! It's scary to rely on this thing! It wont boot wont charge, nothing. I am just reading the other reviews and realizing how stupidly I have been relying on this for more than 6 months now!

I liked my brother's tomtom on his mobile phone and thought it was cool but at the time, I did not have a smart phone and did not want one so it was not an option. I did some research and found tomtom 910. It has plenty of nice features 1) ipod connect (a selling feature to which they do not sell you the wires to connect your tomtom to your ipod though) 2) large hard drive space (which means its bulk and heavy) 3) can connect to your phone for traffic and as a handsfree set (which means they do not package an fm transmitter for traffic, you HAVE TO HAVE mobile data service [mobile internet] or else your screwed) 4) save point of interest (You can save the address but you can't insert your own name to identify the place, nor does it have an up to date point of interest database and it doesn't even allow you to have a contact list. The point of interest does not even contain phone numbers, which would be nice if you're on the road heading to a store and want to check if they have what you want in stock before going there.

Having used TOMTOM 910 for nearly a year now, I have to say their directions SUCK! You don't know how many times the stupid device has tried to send me down a one way street in the wrong direction. Also, one of my biggest complaints is USABILITY. They stick too much information on the dashboard and important stuff like the what to look for next is stuck at the bottom of the screen in small text. It really sucks when the street is a long name because its hard to read.

LESSON: The lesson I've learned is to avoid TOMTOM and any future products that they have. Buy GARMIN, and if you're looking for cheap products, buy Magellan or some other lesser known brand, but AVOID tomtom. Their direct sucks, their products are pricey and they're always quick to sell you more accessories to add on (while other companies will package stuff like antenna for traffic in hopes of selling you the service).

This and all of the TomTom products seem full of bugs. With the 3 people I know that have different models we have ALL had problems.

Anything from breaking within days of buying it to just bad directions. You can be in a parking lot and this thing will make you leave the lot, take a left, drive in a complete U, and then take a right. Does it ALL the time rather then just telling me to take a right out of the parking lot.

TomTom is just junk as they are made in China and they act like it. Try one of the other brands do not get stuck like i did.
