"Very disappointed here..." | 2008-08-31 |

I would much rather write a better review for this printer, but I simply can't.
My husband who is "Mr. Consumer Reports," usually knows all about what he's wanting to buy. Since he was so kind as to buy me a new imac for Christmas, I decided I would allow him the freedom to choose our new family printer. Our old printer which I bought back in 2000 or 2001, lasted me through at least seven years of printing out hundreds of Christmas newsletters, scores of graphics for projects and photos of the children needed for school posters, birthday invitations, etc. We literally used our old printer, an HP Deskjet to death. I think it was a 970.
**This is the last time I will send my husband to buy a printer without my being there.**
Regarding this printer - the Canon Pixma MP830, I nearly cry every time I print out anything in color. The color comes out much too light. There is simply no comparison to our old HP.
I've also found that the ink is gone in about a quarter of the time it used to run out on the HP.
I can't tell you how disappointed I am with this Canon. Maybe giving it a 3 is a little too generous. |

I am very pleased to be able to give a positive review to an electronic item. So many of them turn out no good regardless of price. Speaking of which this is not the least expensive multi-function printer you can buy, but it is about the best I've found and used.
This is my second MP830 and when I had to buy a replacement I looked at many, read the reviews, and decided to stick with old faithful.
The copy, scan and fax functions on this machine work better than the other three types I have used. No complaint on these functions.
One criticism is that this printer uses a great deal of ink very quickly. Boy that is an understatement. This thing sucks the cartridge dry at a faster rate than a shipwrecked sailor on a desert island sucks rum. The question is what kind of printing do you want. If you only, or mainly, print only black and white, and you don't need any one of the other functions, I must tell you don't buy this. You will be sorry. However, if you want a printer that offers you different qualities of printing, if you want photo printing better than I've had from many great labs, and if you use fax, copy, or scan functions, buy this machine and enjoy your work.
Am I glad Canon still makes this thing. |

"Avoid this glorified printer!" | 2008-08-05 |

| When I first began using my all in one, I loved it (except for the fact I had to be careful how much ink I was using!). I even got a new computer to go along with it after a few months, and that is where the trouble began. My new HP and the Canon function ONLY as a printer. The other features do NOT work. Canon blames HP, saying it is a twain issue and something on the HP is preventing it from scanning. HP blames Canon software. After dozens of hours with tech support on both sides, neither will accept responsibility for the problems. I cannot get a refund on either product, and here I sit with a glorified printer that uses enormous amounts of ink. AVOID THIS PRODUCT!!! |

| I have never written a review before, but I can tell you that this is one great printer. It is simple to set-up and quite easy to use. It has all the features I need and the output is significantly better that the Lexmark and HP printers I had previously. My old HP printer did a good job of printing but the paper never went in strait. I would recommend this printer to anyone looking for a good all in one printer. |

I have had this printer for about 2yrs now and love it. The biggest issue was with the Ink Consumption, which I figured out pretty quickly. Here is some info from Canon on how to make sure you printer is only using black in to print text and not color ink as well....

Issue: How do I print using only the black ink and not the other colors?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solution: Print using black ink only (Windows)
Print using pigment black ink only (Windows) Instructions to print using only the pigment black ink tank only. Occasionally you may need to print using black ink only. Using grayscale alone does not provide this option and the color inks will still be used. By following this procedure you may print using only the pigment black ink tank. Note: Image quality may be sacrificed when printing photographs.
Open the Properties / Preferences window for the printer.
For Windows Vista Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'Control Panel', 'Hardware and Sound', and then click on 'Printers'. Note: If you are in 'Classic' view, Click 'Printers' directly from the 'Control Panel'. Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
For Windows XP Home Edition
Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, 'Control Panel,' 'Printers and Other Hardware,' and 'Printers and Faxes.' Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
For Windows XP Professional Edition
Click 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Printers and Faxes.' Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
For Windows 2000/Me/98
Click / Select 'Start' from the bottom left of the Windows screen, and 'Settings,' then 'Printers.' Click your right mouse button on the listing for your printer, and then select 'Properties' from the menu that appears.
Click on the Main tab.
Select 'Plain Paper' as the Media Type. If any other paper type is selected, color ink will be used to create black.
Note: The pigment black ink will only be used when printing on plain paper.
Select the box for 'Grayscale Printing'. If the document to be printed is in black only, then this step may be skipped.
Note: If either 'Borderless Printing' or 'Duplex Printing' are enabled from the Page Setup tab, grayscale will be created using a combination of the color (dye) inks to prevent smearing.
Click 'OK' to save the changes. The printer will now only use the pigment black ink tank.

"Decent printer while it worked" | 2008-07-20 |

Bought this to replace an HP multifuncion printer which finally jammed up from spewing too much ink, plus I was tired of the bloated HP software that comes with all their printers. The Canon software was much more compact, and the print quality was excellent. The print registration was not great (the square alignment of the print on the page), but I have not seen an inkjet printer yet that consistently aligns the print. I believe this is due to the extremely cheap plastic construction of all these units. Anyway, by juggling the paper feeds I could usually get reasonable results. Faxing, scanning and copying worked fine. The printer has been very lightly used, probably less than 2000 pages (4 reams) in 18 months. It uses lots of ink as others have noted. 99.9% of the pages are printed simplex (one sideed) in grayscale, which I have set the printer to by default. I have probably only printed 5-6 photos on it, and copied a few color pages, always in fast quality to save ink. Yet it goes through ink (including colors) like crazy. Also of note, if it thinks even one ink cartridge is out of ink the printer is completely disabled! No copy, no fax, no scan, no B+W print, even if it thinks a color cartridge is the problem. What genius designed this software? I guess the ones who want you to keep buying ink. All this I could live with, and was very happy with the printer. However, today, 18 months after purchase, the printer dies with error code A600. A Google search indicated this may be due to paper or ink jam. I checked thoroughly, no problems found. So 18 months after purchase, and lots of ink, the thing is dead. To me this is incredibly poor quality. It's unlikely I will be buying another Canon printer. |

as other reviewers said this is a nice machine but its ink sucking habit is out of control!
I bought this item about a year ago and am not happy to be spending a small fortune on ink. Plus, the 5 different ink cartridges run out at different times so this machine requires constant "feeding" to maintain operations.
For the above cited reason, I am looking forward to a new and easy maintenance machine. |

| I have owned my Canon Pixma MP830 for two years now. Worked AMAZING! Until the error codes showed up, first there was 6A00 which in NOT in the book under problem solving error codes. Then error code 5100 started showing up. I called tech support who were great, except could not help me. They said the problem is in the circuit board and I could either buy a new one at their discount (they gave me a code that is good for two weeks) or pay to get it fixed and I would have to pay for the estimate to see what that would cost. SO my dilemma .... buy it again... or get something else. Lemon or Cherry... roll of the dice. But buying a new one every two years is not what I want to do! |
