"Use caution if this is your alarm clock" | 2008-10-04 |

| I have used two of these radios for about a year and have had no hardware problems. Like everyone else I wish the menus were a little easier to use. My primary gripe is the clock. The clock set's itself from some time source on the internet but every few months the time automatically resets to something a few hours off the correct time. It's as if the time zone was changed remotely. This change can occur any time thus causing the alarm to come on in the middle of the night or hours after your intended wake up time. The time is easily fixed by unplugging and replugging in the radio to do a reset. |

| The Soundbridge has good sound and worked well with my upnp setup for about 10 months. Then it stopped coming on. Since it was still under warranty I was able to get a new unit. The new unit also ran about 10 months before it too failed in the same way. I will not be getting another one of these. |

"The future" | 2008-08-17 |

| This radio is a glimpse into our future. It allows me to tune in to any of tens of thousands of radio stations from around the world. If we want Hawaiian music, or New Orleans Jazz or Africian rhythms, we can go right to the source of the music. The quality is as good as a Bose Wave radio. The setup is a little complicated, but if you're patient and follow the instructions in the book and on the Roku website, you can easily program your radio from any computer on the network, or right from the radio itself. It has 18 pre-sets. You don't need to have any computer on for this radio to work; it picks up your wireless network and works with it. It will also pick up you music libraries from i-Tunes and play them. It has built in AM/FM and comes with antennas to maximize reception. There's a remote control, and the one weird thing is that you can only turn off the Soundbridge with the remote. The only option to turn off from the radio itself is a 10-minute sleep button. You can also turn on the radio remotely from any desktop on the network, and even outside the network through Roku's website. It's a wonderful product. |

Roku SoundBridge R1000 Radio Network Music System
The two radios works great off of my Verizon FIOS router. They are sometimes a bit funky and have to be unplugged and plugged back in to reinitialize the stations.
One radio already went dead after 8 months as has been reported by others, apparently because of faulty power supplies.
Customer service is the worst that I have encountered in any company. It has already been a month since the dead radio has been replaced. You can only talk to customer service person sporadically at the company and each step (getting the RMA, having a new radio shipped) takes weeks. |

"Difficulty in setting up" | 2008-07-28 |

This product took much longer than necessary to setup. 1) Your router must broadcast in Wireless B which is not explained in instructions manual. I had to change my settings on my router to broadcast both in g and b. 2) The manual instructs to access Windows Media Connect through control panel or through system tray. On my computer, the windows media connect does not show up in either of these places. I had to go through Windows Media Player. Go to tools menu, select options, then select library tab, then select configure sharing, and then select sharing for the Soundbridge (none of this explained in manual).
Some other notes: 1) Interface is somewhat difficult; 2) Can not use Jango or Pandora websites; 3) the sound is very good for a small appliance but is not comparable to a a-v receiver system; 4) pretty much does what it advertises to do. |

This is not a technical review -- it's about my experience with the Roku. I've had my Roku Soundbridge Radio ( http://www.roku.com/products_soundbridgeradio.php ) for about a month and I absolutely love it. Imagine: 10,000 or so stations, all digital and hi-fi, and free! My current favorite is www.solopianoradio.com which I leave on, tinkling quietly in the background, almost all day long. You can get it on a PC too but it sounds much better on the Soundbridge. Sirius, which has two channels of NPR, can't even come close -- the Roku gives you over a hundred public radio stations, including all my favorites from LA, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and Albany! The radio has 36 presets, but in order to choose which stations you want to preset in the first place you have to WiFi network it because the "catalog" ( http://www.radioroku.com/index.php ) runs on a PC on your network. I have it running on the laptop I keep on the kitchen counter; there, I can pick which of the many many available stations I want to assign to the 36 presets on the Soundbridge in the living room, which I can then choose with its remote. Obviously the presets can be changed at any time, but once you have picked your favorites you no longer need the PC -- until you want to change again. This is a VERY neat product, and easy to set up and use. I have not read the manual but if you like that sort of stuff it has a nice one, 80 pages of Arial 10, so there's lots of information available but you don't need it to have alot of fun with this thing. I have a Sirius radio at home as well as in the car, but I will no longer need the one at home; don't listen to my Bose Wave much anymore, either. The Soundbridge Radio SOUNDS great, and gives you tons more variety. I haven't even begun to get into all the international stuff available -- maybe after I retire. Well worth the price.

I've had this radio for a week now, and i'm almost done configuring it.
The sound is fine, but the Bose is much better.
I bought it to be able to listen to internet radio stations, and it seems to work pretty well for that (although i was surprised to learn that several of the BBC channels -- the main thing i wanted it for -- are limited to within England (i wonder how they can do that on the internet)
setup is a pain; it complicated and tecky -- you need, for example, a PC with an SD card reader. And, as another review noted, some functions are available on the radio, some on the web interface, and some on the remote, but none on all three -- i find the whole setup pretty confusing.
the snooze button and the preset buttons seem pretty flimsy to me, but otherwise the thing seems pretty well made and is definiately more attractive then your average clock radio
Its pretty complicated (or i'm just old). You might want to look at the Manual on line and see if you can figure it out. |

PRO A friend of mine told me about a radio and its quality. I advised him that I really don't listen to radios. He introduced me to the Roku R1000. The sound quality was incredible. This radio was far superior to the BOSE radio. One of the abilities was allowing me to add an SD card with selected music. It came with an attachment to connect to our phone system (Music on Hold). Another nice feature is the 18 pre-sets where my friend has a Sangean with only 12 pre-sets and his is more difficult to operate where the Ruko is much easier. Software on the Ruko was also a plus verses the Sangean Internet Radio. CON I ordered 6 radios and out of the 6 one would not lock on to the signal. However, I must say, Amazon made the return hastle free and painless. The only other thing is that the Roku does not deliver the dynamic sound at a low volume as it does at 50% and higher. Over all the radio is great and I love to listen to the radio now! One in the motor home, one in the bedroom, one at my office and I have the smaller one hooked up in the living room to the lifestyle BOSE System. The other two were birthday gifts. If Amazon ever brings the price down to $149.00 again, I will be buying more radios... they make great gifts. Richard Ayoub
