I am an amateur photographer, but have been so since high school (over 30 years now). I did a lot of research prior to purchasing the B9180 because I had just traveled to Turkey for a month, and had several hundred pictures. I wanted to "professionally" print out some of the better shots. From what I read on both the "professional" Epson and HP printers, both had pluses and minuses. I ended up going with the B9180 and have been very happy. The 11x17 prints I made on the "art paper" are of professional quality, and I have since printed some basic 8 x 10s that are great. So far I am happy I bought this. Plus Amazon's shipping and delivery was outstanding.

I was pleased with the performance and print quality the first month I used the printer but then began experiencing problems with pages that would not print to completion or be ejected which generated erroneous error messages that there was a paper jam. I spent more than 8 hours dealing with multiple tech support people in India and finally they decided to send me a used printer to replace mine which I bought 30 days earlier and so was under warranty.

The used replacement printer had the same problems when printing Word docs or PDF files and so I went through the same endless tech support calls and people who really could only follow the script for troubleshooting. A week later I still cannot print over the network.

I have 28 years experience with PC's and printers and currently have a HP laserjet and a Brother all in one machine on my network along with several computers, both Wintel and Mac's. It is only the HP B9180 inkjet printer that has caused me problems while the others were setup with little effort or time expended. HP used to have great customer support but they have slipped terribly.

Although I like the print quality the problems I have had with the printer and with Hewlett Packard's tech support make it impossible to recommend a HP inkjet printer to others and highly unlikely I will ever buy a HP product again.

I'm a professional commercial photographer and I bought this printer for prints for my fine art work. Even though I'm a professional, I actually didn't use the printer heavily since I don't usually create prints for my commercial clients (they get digital files instead). So the printer has had relatively light use.

I was happy with the printer at first: the prints looked great and the printer was easy to use. However, after almost 2 years of using it the printer started having banding issues (it was leaving thin white lines on the prints which made the prints completely unusable). I ran the printer through its own cleaning/diagnostic routines: after more than 8 levels of cleaning, there was still banding. And using the cleaning routine was problematic because as it went through the many levels of cleaning, the printer would run out of ink (because the cleaning would take so much ink). When I replaced the ink, though, I'd have to start all over again. After all that cleaning, I thought it would be okay. It wasn't. It still had the same level of banding problems.

After I wasn't able to solve the problem on my own, I called HP for phone support. I figured I needed to replace the print heads and I needed to order the parts. When I called, though, I was told that since my printer was out of warranty, I'd have to pay to talk to someone on the phone. For the price of this printer, I felt that this was an unacceptable level of customer service. Especially since I knew that I'd just need to order print heads.

The good news, though, was that I bought the printer on my American Express card and AmEx had an extended warranty for this purchase. American Express paid to have a local service person come out to diagnose my printer. When the printer serviceman came out, he diagnosed it as needing new print heads. They did the repair (it was about $450 for the print heads and the installation which AmEx paid for).

After multiple service visits, replacing all the heads, replacing all the ink (I paid for the ink because all the service was chewing up all the ink), months of calls back and forth, the end result: the PRINTER WAS STILL BANDING.

I fought with AmEx, though, and in the end they are paying to replace the printer. I still need to ship to printer to AmEx (and that will be kind of expensive because it is pretty big), but they will credit me back what I paid for the printer.

The AmEx extended warranty was great.

The HP B9180 printer stinks.

I'm going to buy a new printer with my AmEx refund. This time it will be an Epson.

Puts out a quality print. Inks are supposed to last about 200 years! Inks are VERY expensive! Printer is very noisy and takes a pretty large desktop footprint. It periodically cleans its own heads when left idle which can be startling when it just all the sudden turns on and does its thing. Great for photographers wanting commercial quality without the cost but as a casual color printer, its total overkill.

This is my second B9180 and even though I bought the extended warranty it'll be my last. When I resolve one issue (printerhead cleaning, printerhead replacement, new ink, updated driver) another problem comes up (paper jam, paper not recognized, endless cycling). Because I am not retired, or wealthy, I do not have the time to babysit this machine. Nice prints though.
