"This is the definitive reference"

Great book, and I believe an absolute must for any serious C++ programmer. Great as a reference, and a very informative (if a little involved) read. Nothing beats the thoughts of the language designer/creator when it comes to understanding how C++ works.
"Condensed knowledge"

"The C++ Programming Language" isn't a simple reference we usually use to look up some STL function syntax details. For those purposes one should use other resources (e.g. MSDN or some other online reference). Stroustup's book gives terse, highly technical and very detailed explanation of C++ fundamentals. The writing style of the author is clear and unambiguous. The amount of informational in this book huge, but thanks to attention to details and well designed code fragments, is relatively easy to "digest." This book isn't for novice, of course.
"C++ by the Man Himself"

There is nothing to review about this product. This is THE reference for C++ programming by the man who is behind the development of the language. His insight into the process of programming and what developers need is astounding. This book is the only book you need for C++ programming.

I have owned a copy of the special edition for about 4 years by now. Over all the numerous programming books that I have read/owned, this is the one that I have invested the most of my time. I personally believe that whenever one tries to learn something, he/she should always go to the definite authority so that he/she doesn't get some second handed (and often inferior) knowledge of the trade. In C++, this book is it. What else should a serious C++ programmer study than the book directly from the creator of the language itself?
Be advised though, none of my friends (many of them with a Ph.D in CS) in the IT industry has studied the book cover to cover. This book is simply too terse and too hard for a quick browse. Stroustrup has put everything you ever need to know (essential or non-essential) into this volume. For beginners, it would be quite hard to not get stuck in the details, which is something new comers should definitely avoid.
I would say that this is a must have for the experienced programmers. Beginners should start from something that is intended for the introduction purposes, for instance, Lippman's "C++ Primer."
"C++ holy grail written by the language's creator himself"
I recommend this book to any level of C++ programmer, from rookie to expert, with the disclaimer that the material is likely over the head of a C++ beginner...but it's a great reference none the less. While it may be a challenge to understand for someone without a lot of C++ experience, this book is a comprehensive overview of C++ and object oriented (OO) programming in general. The text isn't easy to get through the first time beacuse the author assumes that the reader is comfortable with various functions and concepts. Sometimes functions or ideas are used in examples that aren't fully explained until later in the text. Some reviewers don't like Bjarne's writing style but I didn't find it to be a problem... it's a C++ programming learning tool, not a novel.
Bottom line: If you are a C++ programmer, you should probably own or have access to this book.
