Editorial Review
As DVD playback made the PlayStation 2 more than just a game machine, hefty multi-media features make the Sony PlayStation 3 an even more versatile home entertainment machine. Features such as video chat, Internet access, digital photo viewing, and digital audio and video will likely make it the central component of your media set-up. Still, it is first and foremost a game console--a powerful one at that.

Once considered the red-headed stepchild of Sony's large, confusing fleet of Playststion 3 models, the news that new models of the PS3 will contain no PS2 compatibility gives this model some extra appeal.

Just like the 60GB model, this system has full hardware backwards compatibility and will play the vast majority of PS2 games very well. Replaying Metal Gear Solid 3 on the system, there was noticeable improvement in some of the game's loading from my old PS2, and the game looked great upscaled over HDMI.

There are three drawbacks I can think of with this model- which are easily addressed for the most part.

1. The 20GB Hard drive fills up very quickly on the PS3, even if you're just using the system for gaming and not as a media hub. The game I purchased with the system, Metal Gear Solid 4 took up 4.5 GB on it's own. Thankfully, it's cheap and simple to drop a much larger SATA laptop drive into the system.

2. This is the only Playstation 3 model that does NOT include built-in Wi-Fi and Sony doesn't have an officially supported adapter. That's a pretty big drawback since so many of the PS3's cool features are online. A gaming ethernet bridge does a pretty good job of taking care of this.

3. No media card slots- I can't plug a compact flash card into my PS3 like the 60GB models can... oh, wait. Why would I want to plug media cards into my system anyways? If I did, it would be as simple as buying a $6 hub.

So, if you want a system that plays all your Playstation games and have a wired internet connection, I highly suggest giving this PS3 model a look. It doesn't fetch the premium price that the 60GB units currently are and its drawbacks are easily addressed.

Before I go into anything at all I want to state I love all three consoles. The Wii factors in fun, and great multiplayer action. The Xbox has many exclusive game titles that fuels it such as Halo. The PS3? Isnt that the console media is degrading? Why? Because both Ninetindo and Microsoft realize that Sony has made a gaming console far beyond their own. Most consumers look at the slander remarks of the PS3 and ignore its greatness. Ignorance is common my fellow gamers. The truth is PS3 is a God among its counterpart consoles. Let me start by making a compare and contrast list.

First off PS3 has a Blu-ray player, that alone is reason enough to buy this system even if you arent a gamer. Have you watched Blu-ray on a HD-TV? Its unreal.

Secondly Sony has went through alot to provide a great online community that is (Survey Says! "FREE!") Not only that Sony has better online servers than Microsoft that allows almost no lag at all. (You've been in those Halo matches where you suddenly die because the Game lagged and a missle from a rocket launcher mutilates your body sending you 100 feet away from where you were? Thats lag!) You wont expirence it on the PS3 unless you have a faulty connection.

Third the PS3 isnt as loud as the Xbox 360 which makes a god awful noise especially at night when your playing and its all you can do to hear the characters dialouge. The serenity and peaceful PS3 dissolves that problem.

The PS3 also does not tend to overheat as much as a 360. This also depends on where it is at but the PS3 has fewer flaws. You've heard of the Red Ring Death? lol. That makes me laugh everytime. Poor Microsoft they should stick to making computer software and leaving the Gaming up to Sony. Of course I love competition but the slandering of Sony has got to end. Its letting alot of gamers miss out on the PS3.

As for titles PS3 has had a slow launch (Mostly due to the media slandering the PS3 making game producers back out on exclusive titles) However since the release of Warhawk, Assassins Creed, Lair, and Drake. Sony has noticed a great increase in PS3 sells. Also Sony has re-inserted the Rumble that fans have asked for and also switch to the 40G and 80G instead of the 20GB and 60GB. You may have noticed the $100 price drop.

Basically this is by far better than the other two consoles (Both of which are great aswell) Do yourself a favor and buy a PS3, trust me you wont be disappointed.

First off, i have both systems now. We all know that the 360 came out in 2005. The launch lineup was not the best but it still was way better than the PS3's. The funny thing at one point i hated Microsoft and the XBOX 1, until i played Halo. That game showed what Microsoft was capable of. I have been a loyal fan since. The 2 biggest issues with the PS3 is the price and the titles that are out. There really isnt that much to choose from. I love Metal Gear Solid but there are so many exclusive titles on the 360 that you cant go wrong. The PS3 will never and i mean never have a game as big as Halo 3 or Ninja Gaiden 2 which comes out sometime next year. If Sony was smart they would have made the system at a base price of $400. Then they should have waited to release a blu-ray player add-on just like the 360 and their HD DVD player. That would have made more people eager to buy the system. Honestly, the HD DVD and Blu-Ray are identical if you ask me. The only big difference would be your TV. A lot of people say the graphics are so much better on the PS3 than the 360. Unfortunately, they are sadly mistaken. The 360 has found a way to utilize the core processors within the system. That means they can isolate things so the graphics run smoothly. The PS3 is said to be a little bit more complex. If you compare the same games on both systems, the 360 has the edge and its the truth. Like i said i have both so i can argue for both. Its a shame that the once exclusive titles like GTA 4, Resident Evil 5 and Devil May Cry 4 are going to be on the 360. I am sure Sony isnt too happy about that. Sony could find that Metal Gear Solid 4 is heading towards the 360. Hey, it did happen with MGS 3 and XBOX had a better polished version of the game. I truly believe it comes down to preference and which system you can stay with. I personally would recommend the 360. But if you have been a Sony fan since Metal Gear 1, go with the PS3.

I own the Wii and love it. I picked up an XBOX360 Elite and it's great. I own an HD-DVD player but I wanted to complete my collection by adding in the PS3 to not only get the gaming system but the Blu-Ray while they battle it out. My hold out was the price. Once the price dropped I paid a visit to my local Gamestop and low and behold they had a 20 gig unit in stock refurbished and they sold it to me for $300.00. How could I say no? It's a total steal at that price. Now I got me a Blu-Ray and a great gaming system to boot. I am not concerned about the loss of the memory ports vs the 60 gig becasue I won't be uploading pictures or music to it. I don't need the WiFi because I have no interest in buying a PSP and I can direct connect this to my cable modem because of the location of where my systems are. So I am VERY happy with my PS3. Matter of fact I picked up Resistance of Man and Ninja Gaiden and I must say they are both mind blowing awesome! The format wars have ended for me and I look forward to the exclusive games coming our way for the PS3 in the future. Soooo glad I waited for the price to drop.

Just an quick update. I bought an internal 120 gig 2.5 HD and installed it within 2 mins on my 20 gig PS3. The 20 gig is the way to go because the upgrade is painless and cheap. You can pick one of these drives up for $66.00 online at various vendors. Save your duckets and get the 20 gig and do the upgrade as soon as it arrives. Gamestop has these machines for $349.00 used/refurbished.

Here's the deal.
I, myself, do not own a PS3. However, I have numerous experience with it from playing at a friend's house, and he owns ALL THREE SYSTEMS, and have played all of them. All of them have numerous pros and cons, and none of them are really better than the other. It really is just the features and games you want, you know, personal preferences.

If you think the price on the PS3 is really high, well...it is. But they pack all of the components that you would find in a high-end gaming PC, and WAY BEYOND, for six Benny Franklins. And stop comparing it to the 360. It makes me want to vomit. When talking about graphics, they're both amazing. More than good enough. Just leave it at that and end the explosion of meaningless comparison posts. Also, hardware-wise you get a hella' lot more bang for your hard-earned dolla' on PS3. Here's why;

PS3 initial-$600 -----------------------------------------= X360 initial-$400
60-gig hard drive-INCLUDED ------------------------- 20-gig hard drive-INCLUDED
Wi-Fi ability-INCLUDED ------------------------------ Wi-Fi ability-$100
Blu-Ray game and movie capability-INCLUDED -------------------- HD-DVD movie (not game) playback-$200
Online competition ability-INCLUDED ------------------------------ Online competition ability- $50 a year

600 ------------------------------ 400
0 ------------------------------ 0
0 ------------------------------ 100
0 ------------------------------ 200
0 ------------------------------ 50

PS3= $600 ------------------------------ X360=$750

See, you save 150 dollars you can buy on games and accessories!

Admittingly, the game selection kinda...well, really, sucks on the PS3. I have firm faith that that will change, however. Especially with an anticipated price drop.

On the issue of money, all of your companies want your money. That's the business. But I always have this grudge toward Microsoft that they like to leech your money, apart from the hardware price comparisons I displayed. They certainly make purchasing items online more inviting when your drawing points off of Live Points rather than actual funds from a credit card. I'll admit, they know what they're doing. They know how to suck you in and keep you there with the ever-so-addicting Achievements, and they have great software to back up their system. The 360 is doing good. And it's a good system to own. But please don't say it's more cost-effective than the PS3, because that is a blatant lie.

Moving on, many people have been downplaying the Blu-Ray, saying it's a waste and not really necessary. PEOPLE!! OPEN YOUR EYES!!! GAMES ARE GETTING EVER-MORE COMPLEX, AND WILL INEVITABLY WILL TAKE UP MORE DISC SPACE!!! MASSIVE GAME WORLDS ARE NOW POSSIBLE BECAUSE OF THIS!!!

As far as the movie aspect goes, Blu-Ray is looking like it has a solid foundation in the consumer and studio market, and has a clear shot a beating the HD-DVD. Even though there really isn't a winner yet, the market already has a preference. If your not buying the system for the games, buy a PS3 as a Blu-Ray player!

1) Bluray movie player
2) SACD player
3) CD player
4) SD-DVD player (with 1.8 firmware upgrade)
5) streaming media player (with 1.8 firmware)

So, for $500 you get all this and I have not even mentioned games.

I bought this before i deployed to iraq, and honestly i was very impressed with it. The graphics were really amazing and the way the menu screen is hooked up is really good. The only downfall was the fact that some of the games that were out when i first bought it. Madden 07 was just pushed out really quick for the release of the ps3. But other than that its amazing, i recommend that you buy one if your into gaming.

Three new consoles. Three deformed dwarves trying to win a beauty contest. Which pig shall we kiss?

For your consideration: the Wii, a Gamecube with a gimmick controller designed to appeal to kids for however long their attention span lasts. Like all fads, destined for the back of the closet as soon as they get tired of it.

The XBox 360, which is a nice toaster oven, at least. If you haven't heard, they still overheat. An engineering flop of epic proportions.

And the PS3. Take out a second mortgage, American consumer. You could buy a 360 and a Wii for the price of this one.

And here's the capper: nothing that any of these consoles does is actually new. They are nothing but insanely expensive graphics card updates, except for the Wii, which isn't even that much. The games look better, but play exactly the same. It's the same old games. Think about it: that's why different versions of many of these games exist for the old consoles. In reality, there hasn't been anything new in games since the N64, a decade ago.

Gaming passed the point of diminishing returns a long time ago. With this generation, it has reached the point of negative returns: you are forced to spend a lot of money on a console upgrade to get the latest games, and yet the games haven't improved enough to justify it. Thus, you are spending a huge amount of money to get something that is only marginally better than what you had all along. You are now officially getting less bang for your buck than with the previous generation. You are actually losing ground as the technology "improves".

The PS3 has likely already lost the console wars, but the real losers are gamers. These are three turkeys of systems. Maybe it's time we all went back to PC gaming...
