I liked the action in the movie. the stunts are very good and the fighting is good. I imagine I will hear more about the man who plays the cop.

This movie does NOT have the best story line or dialog. Point-blank the only real reason to watch this movie is to see a wonderful display of Parkour (also known as Freestyle Running/Walking. Google it).
PLOT: in the future cities get worse, blah blah blah. The worst section is known as District B13. One of the main characters Leito, is from District B13. He gets sent to prison for killing a man. Later on he tries to save his sister with the conditional help of the other main character (and founder of Parkour) who's using him to help find and defuse a bomb that is supposed to be somewhere in the district. I'm not using names because they're not important.
once again, the ONLY reason to watch this movie is because of the incredible no-wire stunts that they do. some serious don't-try-this-at-home jumps, flips, and fighting. If you've seen Die Hard with a Vengeance, the founder of Parkour is the white-blond haired guy who's jumping around the pipes when Bruce Willis is in the ventilation system. the one that Bruce calls a G-d monkey. This movie is seriously worth watching if you love a good action scene that involves incredible stunt work without the use of wires. think: Jackie Chan on speed, and you might get an idea of what goes on. |

| For anybody looking for a good martial arts with mix of gun blazing and incredible stunts, this movie will offer all the ingredients. The PQ is top notch and AQ is almost as good as the video. This movie should be in your list if your looking for a good action film with a twist of futuristic setting. |

| Luc Besson is one of my favorite directors, but when it comes to the lower budgeted films where he just produces, they've been VERY hit and miss. Given that, when I discovered this I wasn't expecting much, just another mediocre futuristic French actioner. However, I'm glad my expectations were exceeded because this was probably one of the most exciting action films I've seen in the past few years, with some mind-blowing acrobatic stunts and fight sets. The opening chase scene alone is worth the price of admission. The story about a nuke gone missing is fairly standard, but has some nice social relevance in this case and the story involves intertwining the two nimble main protagonists in a fairly believable joint effort. Bottom line: this is a damn cool movie! |

| An average movie. Parts of the physical action scenes were quite entertaining and some good humour, but large sections of the movie were relatively stiff, some-what contrived & predictable. Certainly not as cutting edge as what you would expect when seeing Luc Besson's name attached to it. |

This is a great odd couple buddy action movie, without giving too much away it is taking the real world State Sponsored Terrorism ideas with an Escape from New York meets Ong Bak flavor.
It is the not too distant future, tough cop Leito's sister is kidnapped after he destroyed a gangs drugs. The city of Paris is divided into districts and separated by barriers to keep the lower class out of the rich elite districts. The police just received orders to move out of his district because it has become a lost cause. With Leito's sister being now held by the Psychotic gang leader and himself in jail for killing his superior, Damien a by the book elite police squadron officer is introduced. Damien's mission is to convince Leito he will help him find his sister while his main objective is to find a stolen nuclear weapon set to explode in the next 24 hours.
I also recommend Nightmare City 2035 (2007) hard to find but great. Search for these DVD titles on Amazon, here are some documented real world examples of State Sponsored Terror. Terrorstorm: 2nd Edition (2007) Endgame: Blueprint for Global Enslavement |

| Completely underrated French film that made no noise stateside and didn't even get a soundtrack released despite killer beats from Da Octopusss (you have to go his myspace page to hear them), this is flat out the most delightful action movie I have seen this decade. The action is excellent, the leading tag team are affable despite, apparently, being stuntmen by trade, the dialogue is sharp and the pacing quick, the plot is completely ridiculous and it has all the style of everything that Luc Besson has even been remotely associated with. In and out in a frenzied 90 minutes. Really, any plot that features a nuclear bomb with a 24-hour timer on it has to be a good movie. |

District B13 (originally titled Banlieue 13 in its native France) is directed by Pierre Morel, and stars Bibi Naceri, David Belle, Cyril Raffaelli, Tony D'Amario, and Dany Verissimo. ***
District B13 takes place in France in the not-so-distant future. The worst parts of the country have been literally sealed off by walls, isolating and quarantining the residents within. In these sectors there is no law and order, and the drug lords reign supreme. One man refuses to put up with the drug lords, and destroys a valuable shipment. His sister is abducted in retaliation, and his plot to rescue her fails, landing him behind bars. Eventually, he joins forces with an undercover officer - and the twosome must find a deadly neutron bomb before it can be set off. ***
As far as "purely action" movies go, District B13 is a fine French import. It's light on the story and plot development, but when it comes to action and stunts, the film is on a plane all its own - and the film spares no expense on the thrills. The movie feels more like a collection of stunts and action scenes than something with a flowing, truly coherent storyline. But at the end, after having been thoroughly entertained by all of this, who am I to complain? If it's action you seek, this is your film. ***
The personnel who worked on this film really show their stuff off in the action scenes, making the entire movie entertaining. Belle and Raffaelli are more than just actors, they largely do their own stunt work - and the results speak for themselves. The filmmakers here edit these action scenes excellently, and when you watch the movie, you'll see that the results speak for themselves. The crew here, on both ends sides of the camera, accomplishes everything they set out to do. ***
Yes, the characters are a bit on the shallow and one-dimensional side. But this isn't the kind of movie that puts its emphasis on character development. For action fans, there's no finer foreign film. ---
Image And Sound:
My review is based on a screener disc, so picture quality on it doesn't represent the commercially-released disc. ---
Special Features: None on the screener disc I reviewed.
Final Words:
District B13 is a fun-filled, non-stop, action-laden thrill ride that makes no apologies for what it is - and is all the more entertaining because of it. If you're looking for a dosage of cinematic action, District B13 is for you. |
