Ok i am impressed. The product works very well and you can scan the text quite quickly. This is goign to save me loads of time no more messy handwritten (unsearchable) notes!
One thing, the driver CD is put in the box kitty corner to save on packaging. My cd was a bit warped or something from the poor packaging design and it took 4-5 attempts to get it to run properly. You can probably find the software online anyway. Pen itself was packaged safely.

"CPEN works great" | 2009-10-24 |

| This pen works great for taking notes. I can read and scan important facts opposed to the painful task of writing them down. It cuts down on the time to read and take notes in half. It takes a little practice to use but you will understand how to use it in no time at all. I recommend this to anyone who wants to scan important facts from books. It does require software which comes with it in order to use it on different computers. |

"Good, but not without shortcomings" | 2009-10-21 |

I have been using this product for one month now. It performs rather well. But one should surely not expect perfect results! Manual corrections are still necessary. But I think the C-pen 20 is the best product around today.
I suspect that the performance of this device can be affected by the antivirussoftware one has installed and/or the speed of one's system. Last weeks I had installed a trial version of Bitdefender antivirus software (on my rather basic PC, running winXP Home), and during these weeks the text recognition of the C-pen was sometimes really bad. After I uninstalled Bitdefender, the problems were over. I now use ESET Nod32 antivirus without problems.
One of the bad points of the C-pen is that it does not reproduce even the simplest layout properties, like italics or bold. All text is plain text only.
Another disadvantage is that it does not recognize superscript, for example numbers or footnotes.
I should also like to have a button on the pen that undoes the last scan, so that you can easily correct a sentence that went wrong.
The device I use is the black one (sold in Europe); it happens to use ABBYY Finereader version 8.0 for text recognition. However, ABBYY already is on version 9. If it is true that the new version produces better results, why does C-pen still deliver this device with version 8?
All in all a good product, but for basic text recognition only.

"Ectaco C-Pen 20 works like a charm" | 2009-10-02 |

I was first taken by the quick response of the retailer - I received my Ectaco C-Pen 20 within a couple of days, rather then the ten days to two weeks promised. Outstanding service!
After reading a good many reviews of scanning pens I was somewhat skeptical of the C-Pen 20, but it appeared to have newer technology behind it. For my purposes, scanning sections of books as I do research for my Ph.D. dissertation, it is working quite nicely. It is an essential tool for research because it allows the taking of notes and "underlining" of library books in an expeditious manner, saving a great deal of time. From time-to-time I find that the scan is a bit inaccurate, but that is always attributable to how I hold the pen and guide it over the page. If the page isn't flat or my hand slips on the page, the scan will be inaccurate but the tone set up lets me know immediately that the scan didn't work properly.
Since no piece of hardware can work perfectly, especially when its function also depends upon the coordination of the use, I am very pleased with the C-Pen 20. I give it five stars - it was easy to install, easy to understand its operation, and quite easy to get use to using it. Thank you for a superb product! It is a great time-saver for my research.

"Doesn't Work On Vista 64 Bit!!!!!" | 2009-09-24 |

I ordered the Ectaco C- Pen 20 for school work, thought it was a great idea. But, after spending 2 days attempting to install it on my Vista 64 bit OS I found out that the c-pen, although physicaly is the same, when it is sold from different companies it works with their own software. So, the ECTACO brand pen does not work on Vista 64 bit and I could not get it to work properly with Vista 32 either, although the tech told me it would if I downloaded updated software: It didn't even with the new software. So I was forced to return the pen. But do not be fooled there are different software manufacturers that all sell the same product: be sure you know your operating system and then find a software that works for it, because the software is not interchangeable between manufacturers... I tried!
