| I decided to pay a little more for a quality recorder. I'm glad I did! This little machine is awesome! It took me a bit to figure out the buttons and features (I'm a blonde!), but once I did, I couldn't be happier with this little recorder! The stereo mic pics up the slightest sounds and the playback is great. I needed one that was USB compatible so I could use a voice editing program on my laptop. If you're looking for a recorder to do EVP work, I highly recommend the Olympus DS-30. I'm sure it would give the same quality results for any recording needs. Buy it. You'll like it! |

Not sure what any of the problems other people have had with this recorder before but I found it really simple to use if you've ever used a piece of electronic equipment or computer. Right out of the package I could figure out how to use every function of this recorder including using the software without touching the instructions. It doesn't do much, so it doesn't take much to figure out. Pick your folders, record, playback, transfer, organize.
The Olympus DVR is nicely built, very small and lightweight: like a fancy PEZ dispenser. Sound quality is superb for a portable recorder. Comes with a stereo mic that plugs in on top that can be detached; or use the built in mono mic, making it even smaller. I found the mono mic had much better sound for voice pickup since the stereo picks up too much ambient sounds. Plus, smaller file size. The stereo mic is really good for recording a "panoramic view" of sound from all directions, but not as great for dictation, interviews or lecture. You can plug in pretty much any mic with a mini-jack: camera mics, lavaliers, phone headsets, etc. I use an old cellphone headset (FYI:same as Skype / internet headsets) plugged into it while driving and works great! The sound is great because the headset mic is right next to my mouth and I can hear playback in my ear. I do a lot of extended driving and come up with most of my ideas on the road, so this is really useful.(Disclaimer: I don't recommend operating any device while driving.) There is a mic sensitivity adjustment switch that works wonders when applying it to the correct recording situation.
Software install and transfer was pretty simple, as is the program; although I prob won't use it, as I have other audio edit programs. The Olympus creates a propietary DSS sound file (extremely small file size compared to standard WMA) that can be converted to WMA, although I don't recommend the "blowing up" of your files unless you have a need. The program is basically only useful for saving, organizing and playback of your files. If you plan to do more, like edit or convert files for other uses, you need to use other programs more suited for your needs. If you are just getting started, it is easy to do for FREE with the internet and a few Google searches. Might I suggest "Audacity" or "i-tunes". You'll be surprised what you can do for free with a little research.
Overall, an excellent little recorder that actually exceeded my expectations, especially for this price range. Highly recommend.

| I use this Olympus DS 30 to record college lectures. The quality is great when I set it on the podium near the speakers. If I'm farther away it's not as crisp and clear. I think there is some sort of function on the device that is supposed to correct this but I haven't looked into all of the features yet. I am pleased with my purchse overall. |

| I bought this little recorder to take to violin lessons and record new songs played by my instructor - allowing me to then bring it home and practice. The quality of sound was my biggest concern and after using it I found this to not be a problem. Sounds works well. It is easy to record and play back. I haven't tried uploading anything yet. So far it suits my needs perfectly! |

| Love this little recorder. I use it to record my bio lectures and the voice quality cannot be better. It picks up the prof. voice even if I'm not sitting in the front. Worth the money. I have a MAC and the WMA files downloads directly and can be played using realplayer. |

| While the digital cameras, flashlights, camcorders, cell phones and two way communication devices all drain batteries when a ghost manifests itself NOT the Olympus DS-30! We only use lithium batteries in all products and of course carry backup. A backup was not needed with the Olympus DS-30. It must be an inadvertent benefit during the design process that this unit is immune to the power of spirits. Yes, Olympus can now add to its many features that it repels attacks of energy from the other realities of the universe. When it comes to picking up the voices from beyond NOTHING beats the Olympus DS-30. Throw away the Ouija Board kids this DS-30 will outright tell you your answers. Ghosts love the Olympus DS-30 so much that they will find you. |
