It's difficult to get the scanner to work. We have had it for over a month but its been almost useless. Too time consuming to take the trouble. I have other products by HP that work without the frustrations. What should I do?

I have over 3000 pics and documents to scan and this Scanjet is doing the job. The pics are clear and the machine is easy to use. I'm glad I bought this one. It was a great purchase.

I bought this scanner over a year ago and use it mostly for negatives, with the occasional document every now and then. I used it first on an Apple PowerBook G4 (Mac OS X 10.4) and now on a MacBook Pro (Mac OS X 10.5) with the software provided with the scanner, HP Scan Pro and I must say I have mixed feelings.

Pros:
- The images look great! They have all the detail that I want/need with the correct tones and colors.
- The price is right. A dedicated film scanner costs way more.

Cons:
- As the title of the review says, it is painfully slow on a Mac. Scanning one 35mm-film frame at 2400dpi and 100% scaling takes 10min! The software suggests a different setting which is faster but is really fuzzy.
- The software's setting suggestions and frame selection "guesses" are useless. HP *really* needs to work on the software side of the scanning business.

All in all, if you're *very* patient and don't want to spend a lot of money on a film scanner, this may work. If you expect fast and great results, look somewhere else.

I have used this scanner for about 3 weeks and did notice the slight noise from the gears. I removed the base and put "Sil-Glide" lube on the teeth of the three gears and the metal guide rod and excercised them and it quieted down by half. There was no lube on the plastic gears, but some helps. All functions seemed to work just fine on this scanner. I think it is an excellent buy.

I bought the HP Scanjet 4050 because of its ability to scan sixteen slides at once. I wanted to digitize my grandparents' collection of 3,267 slides. I was after the cheapest and quickest way of doing this and was a little apprehensive about the mixed reviews this scanner received. After trying it, I decided to post a review to help people in a similar circumstance.

Pros:
* Relatively cheap - most slide scanners cost the same or more and the services that do it for you cost about 20 to 30 cents a slide. (That would have cost me at least $653.40)
* Scans sixteen slides at once - the competing scanners that I found in this price range only scan one to four slides at a time.
* Good quality images - the originals were taken with an old 35mm point and shoot camera and the results look like they just came from a cheap modern digital camera. Do not expect professional quality.

Cons:
* You need to preview each batch - the included scanner software does a very poor job of determining the layout and border of the individual slides. I had to spend a minute or two with each batch to line them up correctly.
* The included image editing software is also very poor.

Overall: I recommend this scanner for people who want to digitize their large collection of family slides without spending a lot of money.
