"GREAT ITEM"

I READ A REVIEW STATEING THAT THIS DRIVE WAS SLOW AFTER I HAD ALREADY ORDERED TWO. I THOUGHT I HAD JUST ORDERED A LAME DUCK. AS IT TURNED OUT, I'M GLAD I MADE THE PURCHASE. I LOADED THE DRIVE WITH 55 INDIVIDUAL CD'S OFF MY PC IN A LITTLE OVER AN HOUR. BY THE TIME I SELECTED THE NEXT CD THE LAST ONE WAS FINISHING. BETWEEN THE TWO DRIVES I HAVE 108 CD'S IN THE CHANGE TRAY IN MY CAR. I CAN SEE A COUPLE MORE OF THESE DRIVES COMING MY WAY IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
I purchase a little 8gb Micro Vault today. It was on sale at Circuit City so I thought I would give it a try. The first thing I saw after I opened the box up was that, unlike the misleading photos on the Amazon web site, there is virtually nothing on it to allow it to be clipped to anything. No keychain, no type of hook. nothing. It would just have to loosely dangle in ones pocket to transport it and would be real easy to lose if I can't hang it on a small clip when not in use. The other thing is that it really is slower than other flash RAM that I have. Sony keep falling and falling and falling into an abyss of proprietary , lower quality hardware, worse warantees, and stupid ideas. They are soooo out of touch.
I have no complaints with this flash drive. I have downloaded programs to it from the internet and have transferred files on/off to my computer. It performs flawlessly.
The included compression software is a bonus. I haven't had the need to use it yet but it's there if I need to squeeze more data onto the drive.
Some reviewers have complained about the speed. For them it's too slow. I don't share this complaint. I have no problem with how fast it transfers data. If it is too slow I haven't noticed, as I am rarely just sitting there waiting for it to finish. While it's doing its thing, I am checking my email, working on a doc, or surfing the net. By the time I'm finished, it's finished.
Obviously, faster is better. But so is quality in this age of iffy performing technology. When I find something that works well and serves the purpose for which I purchased it to my complete satisfaction, I stick with it. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this Sony flash drive again.
The only issue I have is the price I've seen it sell for at many places. Thankfully Amazon has it priced reasonably but it generally sells for around $70 at most chain stores I've been to. I wouldn't pay nearly that much for it and I have no idea why it is priced so high.
Maybe there was a bad batch of these out awhile back, but I have no complaints about the speed of transfer mentioned by previous reviewers. It took about 12 minutes upload approximately 1GB of photos (images of 1-4MB each). That's fast enough for me. I did not use the included compression application, so perhaps that slows things down. But with 4GB of storage, I doubt I'll ever need compression. Overall, nice unit, good value, and the retractable plug means no more lost caps!
"Painfully Slow"

I have been using the SONY 2 GB microvault classic with excellent results. Since I was very pleased with the 2GB microvault - I decided to upgrade to the 4GB model. I gave the 4GB Microvault a one star rating for one reason. Transferring files to and from the unit as well as deleting files off it takes incredibly more time using the 4GB model than with the 2 GB model. I ran many tests between the two units and here are some results: Transferring one folder of files to the:
4GB - 21 minutes
2GB - 1.75 minutes
Deleting these same files off the:
4 GB - 11 minutes
2 GB - 25 seconds
These results were typical with all the testing I did. All testing was done using the same computer with all procedures being equal.
I was able to return the 4GB Microvault - with a renewed appreciation for the 2 GB model.
This version is terribly slow. I have had the 1GB and 2GB versions because I love the form factor -- no more lost caps! I use them with four different computers (three different manufacturers). They perform the same with all of them. In this case, the 4GB version is a true dog. For a small number of large files, it is about 2x slower than earlier models. For a large number of small files, it is about 10x slower, sometimes worse. Totally unacceptable. That might not seem bad, but when you realize that a standard 3 minute transfer now takes over 30 minutes, spit-cough-phooey! The only reason I am even keeping it is because I need the extra space. Not happy with this one.
