The Covenant occupation of Earth has uncovered a massive and ancient object beneath the African sands - an object whose secrets have yet to be revealed. Earth's forces are battered and beaten. The Master Chief's AI companion Cortana is still trapped in the clutches of the Gravemind - a horrifying Flood intelligence, and a civil war is raging in the heart of the Covenant. It's all been building to this -- a desperate, final war that leads to a soul-shattering climax of epic proportions. Take control of Master Chief to defeat the Covenant and destroy the Flood to prevent the annihilation of the human race.

Editorial Review
Adding to Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2, the epic saga continues with Halo 3, the amazingly anticipated sequel to the highly successful and critically acclaimed Halo franchise. In this third chapter of the Halo trilogy, Master Chief returns to finish the fight, bringing the epic conflict between the Covenant, the Flood, and the entire human race to a dramatic, pulse-pounding climax.

Get ready. The Chief is back.

HDR lighting, self-shadowing, and more make Halo 3 look and feel realistic.

Mystery abounds with the return of Cortana.

Earth is conquered. The Covenant is everywhere. Halo 3 promises to be an epic journey. Game developer Bungie announced that Halo 3 will be released for Microsoft's Xbox 360 sometime in 2007. The game was revealed to the world at the Microsoft press conference held at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood, CA in May 2006. To gamer's delight, the announcement was a complete surprise. The rumors have been abound for the past year, as everyone wondered when the next installment would be ready. Bungie and Microsoft did a stellar job keeping their lips sealed, and fans benefited from their first glimpse of the hallowed third and final installment.

The short presentation was delivered in real-time on the Xbox 360 using the current version of the Halo 3 game engine. That's right, no studio production video, Bungie and Microsoft delivered the real deal: what they showed at the announcement is what gamers will see when they play Halo 3 in 2007. The HDR lighting, self-shadowing, GPU-run particle system and many other effects are rumored to show up in full effect in the final game. Needless to say, the gaming community is salivating.

CJ Cowan, Bungie's director of cinematics discussed one of the most startling moments of the presentation: the return of Cortana. "Given the variety of character and story arcs at the end of Halo 2, we wanted to boil down our announcement to a few key threads. Cortana and the Chief being a galaxy apart is a situation we haven't seen before, and is something that is a powerful component to Halo 3. We are using her transmissions in the demo to give the viewer a few subtle clues to her situation and state of mind, without revealing any specifics we want to save for the game itself."

Graphically, the game closely follows in the tradition of Halo 2, although it has been upgraded to take advantage of the Xbox 360's more prodigious visual abilities. As art direct Marcus Lehto explained, "[The presentation] was intended to be an understated announcement of Halo 3 -- the tone is that of mystery and suspense -- the calm before the storm. I wanted to make sure that we reintroduced the Chief, showed that Earth was thoroughly conquered, with Covenant everywhere, and that there is a glorious, ancient artifact buried under the Earth's crust which will provide Halo 3 with the epic journey which we all want."

Taking full advantage of the power of Xbox 360, Halo 3 expands on everything that has made the franchise great, adding a wealth of technical and gameplay advancements. The game design has evolved with next-generation, high-definition visuals, enhanced A.I., an advanced real-time lighting engine, and, of course, new weapons, characters, and challenges. Halo 3 promises an unparalleled first-person shooter experience and, in the end, the most compelling and engrossing story in the franchise's history. Last, but certainly not least, Halo 3 builds upon the unique social multiplayer experience and innovative, evolving online gameplay of Halo 2. Rest assured, you'll still be able to run with your clan and battle with (or against) your buddies from coast to coast.

Here is what people are saying about the Halo 3 [Xbox 360]
4 Star Rating  "Halo 3 - Moments of glory..."2009-11-11

The original Halo game out when I was in high school, and I have many fond memories of playing endless hours of caffine fueled co-op with my friends. In fact, I played so much Halo, when it first came out, that I distinctly remember dreaming about it, a rare occurence for me.

The game was solid. Single player was decently lengthed, if my memory serves me, at around 15 hours of gameplay. The story was entertaining and filled with a variety of circumstances that really kept the player on the edge of suspense. Multiplayer was a blast, if unbalanced, certain weapons being vastly overpowered. And co-op. The single player was long enough, epic enough, and fun enough to make the co-op experience probably one of the most satisfying gaming experiences of my life, and I've done a lot of gaming.

Halo 2 was more Halo 1 with minor updates, weapons balancing (and new weapons) for multiplayer, and new levels. It also contained a short and frantic single player mode which was a bit of a let down. There simply wasn't the concise simplicity and sense of awe inspired by the first Halo game.

Halo 3 is basically another Halo 2.

This may be due to the lack of originality (the plot and characters had already been set). but I think it is mostly in the details. The first game had a singular vision. It persented you on a incomprehensibly huge ring-world with glorious sprawling levels and mind boggling visuals. Gameplay was tight and exacting, each conflict an epic struggle with a new twist; from battling through a giant convenant ship to save your captain, to spelunking deep into an island to retrieve a map of the Halo. Halo 2 completely lacks this consistency, cuts back on the level lengths, and flits between characters and situations. I honestly can't recall the plot of Halo 2 AT ALL, and I've played it three or four times. The battles were also so frequent, and with such similar enemies, that I grew bored with ease.

Halo 3 suffers from all the failures of Halo 2. It is short, frantic, and inconsistent. There are only a few types of enemies in the entire game, and you will fight them a lot. This culiminates with an absolutely endless gauntlet of Flood slaughter through a disturbingly labrynthine Flood Encrusted vessel. The gauntlet itself is annoying enough, but the similarity of all the monsters being faught is maddening.
Despite all this, Halo 3 does diverge a bit from the foibles of its little brother, and I want to take a moment to applaud it for this. Halo 3 returns to a Halo for the last few levels of the game, and for a moment I felt as if I was playing Halo 1 again. The levels again had an epic feel. A variety of enemies encountered me at every turn. I was presented with a mix of vehicle use and on-foot combat. Also, for these brief few moments I know what the heck is going on. And the end. Pure Halo 1. True, it might even be copying Halo 1 lick for lick, but the ride is amazing, and in many ways justified my time playing the game.

Should you buy this game? If you are already a fan of the series, definitely. The gameplay is more of what you have grown to know and love, and the story does conclude, if a bit open-endedly. It's certainly a good game, by almost any standards. The multiplayer, which I have played a fair bit, is Halo 2 rehashed. If you are looking for a standalone good FPS don't bother. You can't follow the story unless you have played the first two, and even so I had trouble following where and why things were happening. Also, if you are looking for pure single player you will be saddly disappointed at the length. I think I beat it in 7 or so hours on Heroic (up one difficulty from normal). In this sense Halo 3 is a truely multiplayer game with brief moments of multiplayer brilliance. I give it a 8/10. In comparison I give Halo 2 an 8/10 and Halo 1 a 9.5/10. (I'd put Halo 3 above Halo 2 on my must have list, however).

Halo 3 had its moments, but it is mostly just an upgrade to an already strong franchise.

In summation: If you want Muliplayer or are a fan buy. If you are neither of these don't bother.

When I first played Halo 1, and 2 I thought they were frustrating, pointless games, until I bought THIS puppy. Campain: compared to Halo 2 and 1, not as fun, but I still play it a lot! The one issue is: What the heck happened to the brutes we know and love and the Elites?? (yes I know the story) and by the brutes we know and love I mean the almost overpowered, boss like brutes from Halo 2! those were good times.
Grunts are funnier than ever "open up and say ah- moooooooommy!" and jackals are, well, meh. now, the hunters are cool! the music is still cool, but still a little reused (see ODST, thats some good music!).
Multiplayer: Visionary. theres so much to do and see and edit and the ranking system is cool and the armor selection is awesome, the whole thing is just wow. wow! just try it.
Halo 3 includes a map editor called "forge" where you can place weapons, scenery, explosives, equipment, vehicles and pretty much anything exept the actual map geography. The weapons are great but not without issues(what were they thinking with the assult rifle sound effect jeez, and what happened to that satisfying battle rifle noise we had?) the grenades are better than ever (fire grenade, frag grenade, Spike grenade, stick grenade) and my fav is the fire one. Jeez that effect is so cool.

Issues: reused soundtrack, dumb driving AI, dumb arbiter AI (why are the freaking MARINES smarter than him?) Bad brutes, campain too short.

Strengths: good marine AI, HUGE weapon selection, lotsa vehicles, visionary multiplayer, fun campain, legenday is AWESOME but sometimes a little cheap (just how I like it!)

graphics: 9/10

Voice acting: 9/10

Story: 9/10

Multiplayer: 10/10

Campaign: 9.5/10

Music: 6.6/10

overall: 9.7/10

Yes, Halo is fun and an easy way for everyone on your friends list to pick up and play endless hours, but after playing the first 2 Halo games this one just gets boring. I play it occassionally with friends online. Honestly, I haven't even finished the campaign mode on my profile. I beat the game a long time ago in co-op with a friend, but Halo 3 doesn't provide much of anything new. The graphics are good, but not much different than the other Halo games. The gameplay is fun, but you play the same style in part 1 and 2.

And these new Halo games coming out...please, Bungie needs to stop making all these off shoots of Halo (Halo Wars...Halo ODST). Some games have good sequels, and Bungie did the right thing in making a third installment, but it needs to be fresh not the same ol' game...

We've been playing all the Halo games for Xbox since they first came out and this one is a great addition to the first 2 Halo games. Needed another copy for upstairs so we can play against each other without screen looking. Love to play the campaign alone or with a friend & dual against each other or as a teams. Playing online is fun & we really like to connect tv's & Xbox 360's to have a Halo party where we have teams to fight, zombie or capture the flag. Great new boards to explore with cool vehicles.Lots of fun!

Halo is one of my favorite video games. Halo 3 is the final chapter in the Halo saga. Despite it being a first person shooter it will live on as a cultural icon of the 2000's because of it's compelling storyline and great game play. It is very much worth what you pay, supposing you already have an xbox. It is recommended you play the first two first though.
