After going back and forth on a number of different scanners to replace my old Scanjet 3970, I settled on this one. My requirements were:
1. Had to be fast. I've got a lot of pictures to scan in and I want to scan at decent resolution (at least 1200 DPI).
2. Had to handle negatives. I've got a lot of old negatives to scan in.
3. Had to be easy to use and "mindless". I typically scan photos and such in during the day and need to be able to drop them on the scanner and hit a single button.
This scanner has met all of those expectations.
A few minor complaints:
1. I can't find a way to specify an output directory. If there is a way it's well hidden.
2. The accessories for holding the slides and negatives seem a bit "flimsy". They haven't broken on me but I could see it happening.
3. The accessories are "loose". To use the slide scanner adapter you have to take out the regular backing for the scanner. And when you aren't using them the accessories have no storage area.
These are minor complaints, however.
Over all the speed is excellent and the picture quality outstanding. It handles negatives flawlessly and can hold up to 12 negatives on two strips at a time saving them each to different files.
Haven't used this much but to date so far so good. It is easy to use, and is very quick in its applications. Would certainly recommend to anyone needing a scanner of this type.
"A very useful device."

Before I ordered this scanner, I studied the previous reviews; it took quite a while to figure out just how the scanner was being used by other reviewers, and whether it would suit my purpose. Basically, I have 30,000 35-mm slides to be digitized; not many of them are of sufficient quality to warrant use of all the features of thi scanner, and even for those few, I would probably create a high resolution scan and top it off with some Photoshop work. So, fundamentally, I scan all my slides to storage "as is", and worry about image improvement later. The Perfection V500 does this basic job, in professional mode, about twice as fast as my old scanner, and I have confidence that all 30,000 slides will be processed. The best ones can wait a bit.
"good machine for just a little more money"

I'd been using an older Epson scanner for a few years, mostly satisfied but not wild about the machine or the results. It was slow and the output was often somewhat grainy. I still have about 5,000 35mm slides some of which I plan to add to my computer. After during enough research to soothe my anxiety about buying a new machine I settled on the Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner. For the money it does everything I could reasonably ask for. It was easy to install, the software was easy to learn to do the basics - still working on the more complex features, it is much faster than my old scanner and the results are clear and sharp - if the original was clear and sharp. I'm sure I could spend more money and get a better machine but for what I want to do, this unit is great.
After paying over $1.00 a slide for a photofinisher to make CD's of my slides, I decided to get a scanner and do it myself. I took the advice of the mostly great reviews here on Amazon.com and got this V500. Amazon had the lowest price, by the way. Set up was a little tricky but once you get going, this machine gives amazing results. Anything a little dark or light is easily fixed in Adobe Elements, which is provided, or you can use Photoshop or the program of your choice. But most of my scans of Kodachromes from the 40's and 50's came out great, ready for use.
I am very happy with this scanner and highly recommend it.
"Good scanner; until there is a problem. Customer Support is minimal at best"
Our scanner was working fine. It creates a useable scan for most papers and documents. Photos are OK. Negatives turn out poorly - unfortunately this is why we purchased this scanner. Customer Support offered minimal assistance in the troubleshooting process. After multiple attempts another / better scanner was purchased and this scanner sat on a shelf unused. When another project came up we pulled the V500 out of storage and started using it. At less than 9 months old (6 or those sitting unused) the scanner stopped working. The power light simply went out and it stopped. We checked all connections, the power source, etc. nothing worked. I called Customer Service. All they wanted to do was complete a list of my contact information and refer me to an authorized service center in another city. I contacted Amazon customer service. Amazon was much more friendly and helpful. Their 90 days return policy was no longer valid, but recommended I contact Epson again. Contacted Epson gave them the reference number I was told to write down from the first call and all the information they had on file was my contact information; which they wanted to reverify! The second "customer service" agent would not listen to my compliant with their lack of assistance and support. I was interrupted several times and told take the scanner to the service center they recommended and they would assist. If it is indeed faulty the service center will work with Epson to replace the unit. So I, the customer, have to drive to another city for a service tech to verify that the scanner is dead. Not customer service in my opinion and Epson is certainly not standing by their product or warranty.
