"useless as a printer" | 2009-07-26 |

This is a One-in-One and not an All-in-One - and it only functions as a One-in-One under ideal circumstances.
Considering all of the good solid performers out there, there is no reason to buy this thing. It has lots of great features like the dual paper trays, CD printing, etc. But what good is a printer that can't print a quality black and white document?
IF and only if ALL the ink cartridges are full, you can print some really nice pics or photos. But if one cartridge is low, you can't even print a b&w doc.
If you are going to have to buy another document printer to supplement this photo printer, you might as well buy a high-calibre dedicated photo printer instead of this.
(also, I noticed that most of the 5 star reviews have only rated this one product... employees are not exactly reliable sources of info...) |

"Beware" | 2009-06-11 |

| Epson designs their printers to guzzle ink. Once any one cartridge is low, even if you can shake the cartridge and tell that there is still ink inside, the entire machine shuts down and you can no longer scan images. Beware. |

"Problem printer" | 2009-05-29 |

| I bought this printer new from this listing. It arrived and would not work. Right out of the box same issue as others mentioned error at start up could not even get the cartridges installed and it made an awful clunking noise. Seller would replace it if I wanted to pay the shipping and a big restocking fee but told me I need to go through Epson warranty. Why should I pay for a new product to be replaced? Finally after fighting with Epson over the amazon receipts they did replace it with a refurbished unit. It arrive with the same issues just not the noise. It will not let you load the ink cartridges. Well Epson sent yet another replacement refurbished unit that I got today and it's the same deal. There is a problem with this model. They are going to send me something else I don't even want to mess with this one anymore. It still makes me mad to buy a new printer and end up with a refurbished unit. |

"Decent printer - expensive ink" | 2009-05-26 |

Let me start by saying that I have been a loyal Epson fan for over 10 years. I have loved all my cannon cameras, but I have loved the prints that my epson printers and scanners have provided me over the years. I have been a purchaser of their photo printer series since the beginning. My first epson photo printer cost me over $500 at the time and gave photo prints unlike any printer available. It is understandable why I purchased this printer with my previous history. I was very unsure of buying an "All-in-One" printer. It is great for manufacturers, because it cheapens the manufacturing price of their products, allows them to use cheaper parts, and reduce manufacturing over head. To the user it has always posed a problem. If something goes wrong with either the printer or scanner, then in most cases the entire thing is garbage. As apposed to having a scanner and printer separate. I went through 2 printers during the life of my scanner. The only reason I upgraded the scanner was to get higher resolution scans for photo negatives. I had to upgrade my previous printer because Epson discontinued the ink for it. This was a very big let down for me. My printer worked well, and I had no problems with it, but if you cannot buy ink then it is pretty useless. I have tried alternative generic ink, but they do not provide the same quality prints. Neither does alternative papers. Stick with Epson products. I also purchased this printer so that I can print on CD's. This function seams to work well. I have printed several CD's and they have all turned out nice. On occasion the centering is a little off, and the printer will not print closer than a certain distance from the middle. It does not matter what settings you make, this cannot be changed. As for photo prints I can say that this has been one of the nicest prints I have gotten from a printer. Even an 8x10 prints very well. My disappointment is that they don't sell 8x10 photo paper. They sell it in 8.5x11 (letter) size. Which requires some manual trimming. I also like the multi-side prints. I hate to waist paper. Yes, it is more green to print on both sides, but more importantly it saves me some green. I like to print on both sides to save on purchasing paper. This printer will print on both sides without manually changing sides. The paper tray in the front is also another nice feature and makes for easier loading of paper. I rarely use the rear paper loader unless I am printing photos or special paper sizes.
Well now that I have identified all the things I love about this printer lets mention the bad stuff. -First, making copies is a pain. The menu system is not very easy to navigate or understand. It took me a while and a few tries to figure out how to get a copy from the front tray. -The CD print option instructions are terrible. There is a button on the front of the printer labeled "CD Print Tray" that must be pressed before setting up to print a CD. This was not mentioned in the instructions, or at least I could not find them. -INK, INK, INK, $, $, $. This printer seems to be the worst printer I have had when it comes to ink. A few years ago Epson had a lawsuit regarding their ink cartridge design. In that suit, it was identified that when an ink cartridge is identified by the printer as being low, the user is forced to change it. The user cannot remove the ink cartridge and replace the same to try and squeeze out a few more prints. That case was settled out of court, I believe. Now their current implementation seems to be centered around their picture mate series design. Each cartridge is good for about 100 prints. It would seem from my experience that the ink cartridges for this printer work about the same. I can get about 100 4x6 prints before I have to change the cartridges, and that was with the higher capacity cartridge (about $90 for all colors - no black). So you are looking at around $0.90 a print. Do the math! I can order prints online for $0.12. This is one of my biggest complaints with Epson and for that they will probably loose my business. Since, photo printing will no longer be an option for me at home, then there is no need for me to be concerned with the brand I purchase. I do a lot of photography and I am not willing to pay more than 7 times the cost just to have them at home. I can wait a few days. -My other major complaint is also with their ink. Let's say that you run out of color ink and want to print something in B&W, like a web receipt to go pick up more ink. NOPE! Once your printer has decided a single cartridge needs to be replaced, the entire printer is a paper weight. You cannot print, nor can you bypass the ink warning. I was extremely angry about this. -As for ink, plan to purchase a lot of Light Magenta and Light Cyan. These two colors go multiple times faster than any of the other colors. I have an idea for Epson, next time make the cartridges for the colors that last longer smaller, so that you can increase the size of these faster emptying colors. That way the user can change all the cartridges at about the same time, and they can get more prints out of it. Because these colors go so much faster (light magenta, light cyan, yellow, dark magenta, dark cyan - about in order of depletion) it makes it very hard to purchase the multipack to save money. The prices are about $60 for standard set, and $90 for high capacity. Individually they are about $15-$20 each, black costing about $15-$25. They say you are supposed to get an extra 60% prints from the High capacity but I have not noticed a difference so far. In all it is a decent printer, but expensive to make any of the photo prints. It is okay for the occasional photo printing, but I will have to think hard on my next printer purchase. |

If your looking for a printer that will last for the one year warr. ,this will be the printer for you. This printer IS GREAT also love those cartridges [5 cartridges at 20.00 per] never was good at math! I just looked again it's [6 cartridges at 20.00]. Google, Epson RX 680 and add [ can not recognize cartridges] it appears to be an ongoing problem with this printer. For you fisherman , this printer would make an excellent boat anchor. "Great for prints... too much trouble and no success with DVD/CD printing" | 2009-04-10 |

I got a two for one deal on this printer model so didn't pass it up. For professional photo prints and daily paperwork (invoices, letters, etc.) they have both performed very well... beautiful photos with very nice tonal quality in the prints.
When it comes to DVD/CD disc printing, forget it! It has been impossible for me to get the prints to line up correctly on the discs, despite doing everything the sparse instructions say should be done. I've had this trouble with two other Epson printers, too. I finally gave up and I'm searching for an alternative brand for disc printing.
I only give 3 stars because it did not do so great as an "all in one," which it is supposed to be. With the poor performance as a disc printer and also the camera card reader quit on one of them and barely works on the other one.
Buy this printer if you get a good deal on it and be prepared to only enjoy the standard tray printing. That way, you won't get your hopes up too high and if the other features work it will be a bonus. |
