Editorial Review
Just because it's raining, snowing or otherwise blustery outside, that doesn't mean that your child can't get the exercise she needs. The Fisher Price Smart Cycle combines the fun indoor activity of video game playing with the physical activity the great outdoors will give you. Designed for kids ages three to six, the Smart Cycle "physical learning arcade system" is an all-in-one stationary bike, video game console, and educational tool. Your little one will exercise her brain and her body -- and have loads of fun in the process.

The Smart Cycle combines the fun indoor activity of video game playing with the physical activity of the great outdoors. View product demo (requires Flash).

By using the bike's joy stick and buttons, your child can navigate through many other games and adventures.

Pedal and steer your way through different environments.

The Smart Cycle games provide different levels for growing kids. Turn on your TV and Start your Engines!
The Smart Cycle plugs directly into your VCR or TV and requires no need for a separate game system. Simply connect the Smart Cycle to your television's input jacks, insert the included game cartridge "key," and your child can start riding -- and learning -- right away! Your child pedals the bike to keep the game going and "steers" with the movable handlebars. A large, easy-to-use and conveniently placed joy stick and bright buttons control the games and educational tools.

The Smart Cycle comes with a "learning adventure," in which your child drives a car by pedaling the bike and turning the handlebars. She can splash through mud puddles and take treacherous corners as she tries to catch letters of the alphabet along the road. She'll learn to keep pedaling to keep moving, while at the same time learning her alphabet!

Versatility Adds to the Fun
The Smart Cycle includes a game cartridge that features several fun and educational adventures that will keep your child happily entertained. A trip to "Math Mountain" will help her practice her numbers, while an adventure-filled trek to "Shape Lake" will introduce her to a wide array of different shapes. The Smart Cycle also includes an exciting car racing game that two children can play at the same time, while a "creative journal" lets your child create pictures and snapshots of her "worldwide" travels.

The fun doesn't have to stop when your child gets her fill of exercise: she can stop and rest, and continue the fun and learning by using the bike's joy stick and buttons to navigate through many other games and adventures. And best of all, several optional game cartridges that can be used with the Smart Cycle (sold separately) will keep your child continually entertained, including games that feature favorite characters such as Dora the Explorer, SpongeBob SquarePants, Barbie, and Hot Wheels cars.

With its wide array of games and height-adjustable seat, the Smart Cycle is designed to grow with your child. So as your child grows both physically and intellectually, the Smart Cycle will grow with her.

The Ultimate Test Drive
We found the Smart Cycle easy to assemble and very simple to install with our television set. All we needed for assembly was a Phillips screwdriver and four "D" batteries (not included). As long as your television or VCR is equipped with the red, white, and yellow RCA jacks to connect the Smart Cycle, you're set to go. We simply connected the included plugs to the television's jacks, turned the television on, and we were ready for hours of fun. Once the game started, the cycle seemed easy enough to operate, making it not too much of a challenge to result in frustrating a child, but not so easy that it would soon become boring. With the additional optional game cartridges, we believe the Smart Cycle promises to be a long-lasting source of entertainment.

The Smart Cycle comes with an easy-to-follow instruction manual, and the set-up only took a few minutes. However, one minor set-back we experience was that we needed the paper instruction manual on hand to understand how to play the video game; we found some elements of the games to be nearly impossible to understand without the instructions. An intuitive set of online instructions designed for children to follow, without the need to consult a paper manual, would make for a near-ideal gaming experience for any child (and parent). Also, although the seat offers four height levels, the handlebars are not height adjustable, which may present a problem for some smaller children.

Pros:
  • Provides a source of indoor exercise for young children
  • Designed to grow with your child's physical and intellectual development
  • Helps develop your child's motor skills
  • Easy to install and use
  • Includes several fun and entertaining educational games
Cons:
  • The instructions to some of the games are difficult to understand
  • The cycle's handlebars are not height adjustable

I am writing this after having the SmartCycle for 1 year. I felt it was important to voice my opinion after the thousanth time changing batteries, and my general frustration over this product. We have already had to have one replaced from the joystick not functioning properly after 1 month of use. The graphics are poor considering the posibilities in this era,and with all of the other posts of frustrations, (not being able to save games, players etc.)I would not recommend this product.

Our sons are 2.5 and 6. The Smart Cycle Fisher-Price Smart Cycleis a great way to simultaneously engage minds and bodies. Big brother pedals while little brother points and shouts answers. We have all game cartridges which are very repetitive. Same format and flow for each. This may be intentionally so for memorizing material. Our 6 yr-old has memorized everything now; says it's too easy. Makes good rainy day or evening activity prior to winding down. Games aside; turn off the Smart Cycle and kids have a stationery bike for exercise!

My son received the Smart Cycle for his 2nd birthday and has spent *many* hours using it. He could not reach the pedals when he first received it, so my husband or I sat behind him on an ottoman and pedaled while our son used the handle bar and other controls. I highly recommend engaging with your child in some way such as this while s/he uses the toy. Though some of the catridges are redundant, there are differences too. A key difference I noted is in the letter game, in which the child (or child and adult) pedals and steers to bump the letters A-Z in order. In the cartridge that came with our son's Smart Cycle (Learning Adventure), if the child does not bump the next letter within a reasonable time period, the letter comes to the child. This speeds the game along and is nice for younger children who may not yet have the dexterity required for this game in other catridges. We have Thomas and Friends, Dora's Friendship Adventure, and Discover Dinosaurs. My son's uses and likes all of the catridges. The toy has been a good companion to the books we read with our son and what he is learning. For example, the toy helped him master the alphabet and is now helping him with phonics.

My father-in-law bought the Smart Cycle for my daughter for her 5th birthday. I thought she would outgrow it in no time. It's now a year and a half later and we are still pulling it out and plugging it up at least once a week. We've never had any problems with the wiring or the pedals like some of the other reviewers have. To keep it interesting, we've had to invest in numerous cartridges. The educational value is excellent, although easy for my daughter who is in 1st grade. It's definitely geared more for the pre-school set. All-in-all, a great purchase.

3 Star Rating  "Expectations were not the reality of product"2009-06-12
- Reviewed By christina1780
I bought this for my son at Christmas time. He's four years old. I've been waiting to write this review for a few months so I could accuratly describe it. Let me start with my background. I'm a mom of two boys. I've been a school teacher for five years at the elementary level. Now, let me break things down for you.

PROS:
* Price - I got the system at a good deal (about $70). I watched Amazon for four weeks, and the price fluxerates a lot - so if you have patience, you can get the product pretty cheap.
* Games - At $20 a game, it can seem pricey, but watch for sales and shop around. I found Toys R Us to have the best deal. I bought three games when they were buy 2 get 1 free.
* Education - I do believe that this game helps children learn some basic, important facts. It has helped in letter recognization, letter sounds, number recognization, sequential ordering, etc. This should not be a replacement for you teaching your child, but a supplement to their learning with you. I really like the game on Thomas that deals with spatial relationship where a train track is layed out and pieces are missing. The child must find the correct missing piece from a selection of choices.
* Peddling - My child had been struggling with peddling his bike for a while. Once he played this, he was able to peddle a real bike!

CONS
* Graphics. If you are used to modern day gaming graphics and TV, you will be very disappointed. The graphics remind me of something from the 80's - like Atari. They are very blocky and chunky. I know the system is not that expensive, but I still expected more.
* Lack of challenge. In each game you buy, you get many mini games. Most of these mini games consist of only three levels. In a block of about 30 minutes, my son is able to beat all the mini games. I wish the games would continue to add more challenge.
* Easy - If you're child has the basic understanding of the alphabet and numbers, these games may be too easy. As my son was 4 when I bought this, I bought Diego and Thomas, both age recommendations were 3-5 years old. They were too easy for him right off the bat. I also purchased Cars which is recommened for ages 4-6, this one is more age appropriate for him.
* Lack of Peddling - You see above that peddling is a pro, but I also add this in the cons because I was under the impression that all the games required peddling. This is not the case. Only a handful of the games require peddling, and in a lot of the games, peddling is only required if you want something extra to occur that is not necessary for the game play.

Overall, I would purchase this again, but I would recommend purchasing for a three year old for I think you will get more use out of it. I would not make this purchase for anybody above 5, I think there are better gaming systems out there for the older ones. Also, buy a variety of age games depending on your child's ability. And, don't forget to purchase the "D" batteries when you buy this for it runs off of batteries.

If I could, I would rate this product at 3 1/2 stars just due to my expectations at time of purchase and how the product truely functions.

And, I do believe this product would be great for any child that needs reinforcement of basic skills. It is said that boys learn and memorize facts faster when doing some kind of motion, and in this case, that would be peddling.
