I auditioned these speakers in my home for about a month. These speakers while detailed, sounded cold, and lacked musicality. I have liked ever other speaker I have auditioned better than these; Monitor Audio Gold, Usher S520, Audioengine A5, and Audioengine A2. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars rather than 1 is that I have read that these need a separate amp to reach their full potential, I used only a 90 watt/channel Denon receiver.

I first got a pair of NHT speakers from a friend for free. It was my first introduction to "real" audio. I didnt think they could be topped, but then i saw the price drop on these and just had to give them a try. The detail is absolutely amazing. The highs are very extended due to the smaller tweeter and the three way design helps keep distortion to a minimum even at extreme volumes. I have heard different systems from Sonus Faber, Polk, B&W, KEF, and Paradigm, and i have to say, these are definitely up there with all of them, especially in the value department. Its hard to say one is truly better than another because its very subjective, but to me, these are absolutely amazing and are at least worth hearing.

Stereophile Magazine is correct again - one of the best bookshelf speakers ever produced. After 50 hours burn in time the speakers produce a full range sound both delicate and accurate. The can play at soft or high volume from Jazz to rock. The Stooges Raw Power never sounded so good on a small speaker (Ron Ashton RIP). They are not sensitive to placement and can go against a wall without the usual base exageration. I have an open floor plan with Vandersteen 2CE's in one end of the house and the Classic 3s at the other end 8 feet up on a wall of a cathedral ceiling. Since both sets of speakers have 86 db sensitivity, volumes are perfectly matched. The Vandersteens are $2000 floor standers and a perpetual Stereophile best buy. The $750 classic 3's are bested by the 2 CEs but give up very little considering the size and price difference. They even have a high wife acceptance factor.
"Best speaker in it's price range, and now that it's on amazon for under $500.,well"
I own 'em and play them with my Onix Melody 3 amp, and it outputs around 38 watts RMs per channel, and because it's a tube amp, it's always a very conservative figure. I broke in these speakers by playing a Barry White tune from Staying Power called Don't Play Games. It's a big fat, rich sounding tune that works real nice on the ears, as does the title tune, but this was a bit more with it's fat lower sonics. In a week of playing it while I was out, it completely transformed the speakers. It also helped warm up my new Rega CD player. I mean, a huge difference took place. Like a rich spongy bass appeared on these that was very tactile and warm. Treble was completely smoothed out. No edge or listener fatigue. However, I want to get more power into these, and am saving for a Musical Fidelity amp. I realize it won't be tube. The company is located just north of san francisco in Bolinas, I believe. Read and compare. The reviews usually rate these with expensive Paradigms and B&W speakers. Nothing comes close to these at amazon's price. Get the right amp, around 40 to 75 watts from a tube amp per channel, or experiment with bigger wattage from a non-tube amp. Only drawbacks are some little foam pieces that seem like an afterthought for the grill. They should be part of the speakers, instead of you have to stick them on yourself. wonderful speakers that when borken in are completely transformed. No break in, no transformation. Try that Barry White cut. Perfect. Of course after a week of your neighbors hearing it while you're out they probably think that either you're The Man, or are taking a class on how to be The Man.
