Editorial Review
The redesigned Sony Mylo COM-2 (which stands for "my life online") enables you to stay in touch with all your IM and e-mail contacts without having to lug around a laptop. While still curvy along the sides for a comfortable feel in the palms of your hand, the top and bottom of the Mylo COM-2 have been given a sleeker straight edge. Other improvements include a larger 3.5-inch LCD (800 x 480-pixel resolution), a bump in Wi-Fi speed to 802.11g (in addition to 802.11b), and a built-in 1.3-megapixel camera. Other features include an easy-to-operate back-lit, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, an embedded microphone and speaker, multi-format digital audio player, and integrated Skype VoiP capabilities.

The redesigned Mylo COM-2 now includes faster Wi-Fi connectivity (802.11b/g), a 1.3-megapixel camera, and upload/download capabilities so you can share photos on the Web. With the integrated wireless LAN, you won't have to worry about monthly bills or long-term contracts--just connect to any open Wi-Fi network and start chatting with friends using AIM, Google Talk, or Yahoo! Messenger. You can also browse the Web as well as send and receive email. Enjoy free Internet phone calls to and from any Skype enabled device and PC anywhere in the world, or Skype-Out to any phone number for a nominal fee.

The built in 1.3-megapixel camera lets you capture photos, edit them on the built in photo editor and--because the COM-2 features upload and download capability--post them directly to your blog or even to your Facebook page.

Through its hi-resolution touch-screen, enhanced Web Browsing combined with Adobe Flash Lite 3 support means you now have access to websites like YouTube and others. Flash Lite support also means you can play compatible casual Flash games.

In addition to powerful communication features, the Mylo COM-2 also provides a wide variety of digital audio, video, and photo playback. Like it's predecessor, the COM-2 is compatible with MP3, ATRAC, WMA (including secure Windows Media DRM 10 tracks you've purchased from online music stores or downloaded from subscription services), and it now can also play un-secured AAC tracks. The improved video player supports both MPEG4 simple/advanced along with the improved video quality of MPEG4 AVC. And the Mylo COM-2 is all about multi-tasking: listen to music while you IM or surf the Web.

The rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides up to 20 hours of continuous music playback, up to 7 hours of video playback, and up to 6 hours of Internet calling. It comes with 1 GB of internal memory, which can be expanded via Memory Stick Duo media, and it offers USB 2.0 high-speed connectivity to your PC.

Mylo Widgets
The Mylo COM-2 comes with several pre-installed widgets that range from a Google search widget and the Facebook Notifier (tracking activity on your Facebook page) to more advanced apps like the My Contacts widget, which works as a consolidated buddy list for all the IM applications on the Mylo. In addition to the preinstalled widgets, you'll be able to download new widgets from the Mylo web site as well as register as a developer if you want to build your own widgets.

Note About Connectivity
The mylo Personal Communicator COM-1 requires a compatible wireless LAN access point to use the interactive IM, email, and Web features. It generally requires no additional monthly service charges as long as you are connected to free access points found in homes, cafes, businesses, and campuses. However, some access points and features may rely on Internet services which may require a fee.

Here is what people are saying about the Sony mylo COM-2 Personal Communicator (Black)
5 Star Rating  "Highly Underrated Product"2009-09-18
- Reviewed By User: A1IF95IUVNHKD5
After reading all the one star reviews on amazon I was a little worried,But I saw a really good deal and bought it so I could see for my self.

I was so relieved when I started using it. The interface is good and and easy to navigate, The browser is fast and Youtube played back flawlessly.

Video will need to be converted but once it is converted it plays back perfectly. The screen is extremely high quality, much more so than the ipod touch screen. Music works well on the device as well. The camera is quite good, taking video is nice and taking stills is easy but the quality could be better and you can't use the camera as a web cam for skype. Skype calls are really nice because you can hold the device up to your ear like a traditional cell phone.

PROS
Nice Design
Stunning Screen(dominates the ipod touch)
Fast Web Browser
Good easy to use interface
Good for use with skype
excellent qwerty keyboard

CONS
camera quality is only decent
no video skype calls
video must be converted

Overall this device is amazing, Whether your looking for a media player, a way to use skype on the go, a web browser in your pocket, or just a cool piece of tech that does it all. I would highly recommend this device.

1 Star Rating  "Avoid the MYLO!"2009-07-28
- Reviewed By User: A3X6VSSO7OSRK
Thank goodness I received this as a gift and didn't actually spend money on it...

Avoid this device if you can, it's been nothing but a headache for me!

To start off with, I'm a big fan of Sony...I own the Playstations 1, 2, and 3, and well as the Playstation Portable, in addition to a slew of other Sony products including digital cameras and camcorders (I love technology!)

I therefore did NOT expect to be so sorely disappointed by the MYLO. There are some good features, and some bad, but unfortunately the bad ones outweigh the good.

PROS
Size - Pretty small and portable

Touch screen - 'Nuff said! Although now that more products are coming out with touch screens, it's less of a novelty than when I first go the device...

Physical Keyboard - I love the slide-out keyboard. Typing on my iPod Touch can be difficult without the physical keyboard, so I was glad I could surf the web on this with more ease due to the keyboard. Which brings me to the...

CONS
Surfing the web - I don't know if my model was defective, or what, but it almost never connected to password-protected networks. The only way I could surf the web was through an unprotected network, which is a big no-no in my book. It would allow me to try to connect, but then it would say there was an error. I've tried in so many different places, which is why I don't think it was my network at fault (although it theoretically could have just been a defective model).

Weight - While small enough to travel, I thought the device weighed more than a product with its limited functionality should. And lastly...

Limited Functionality - It is not worth the price they charge for it, considering how little it does. Surfing the web (when the MYLO actually connects) is fun, but it doesn't justify the MYLO's high price tag. It has other features, including a pretty decent camera - but lacks enough features to justify its cost.

A better alternative for someone who's trying to surf the web on the go is the iPod Touch ... although the lack of a physical keyboard can be frustrating at first, in the end the benefits outweigh the negatives, which unfortunately isn't the case with the Sony Mylo.

5 Star Rating  "EXCELLENT DEVICE!!! FREEE IS KEY!!!!"2009-07-03

I have been using the sony mylo COM 2 for over a year now. There are so many great things to say about this beloved device of mine. It has held up pretty well. People can try to compare this to other communication devices out there but the bottom line is that communicating with this device is free. There are no contracts that you have to pay for like the others. Now let's get into details about the COM 2. I did post my review on CNET as well. It has everything that I need to stay in touch or communicate. The Skype feature allows you to make free calls nationally and internationally as well thus omitting the need for a cellphone. With AIM, I'm able to send instant messages at anytime. It has an okay battery life I'd say 5 hrs without AC. I love the text editor, I can record my thoughts and journal. You can synchronize this with your pc, upload docs, music, vids. Has widgets for facebook, youtube, google and a couple others. The only downside I'd say is that if you live in a rural area, wifi accessibility may not be great. This is a communicating device and I think it gives 100% as far as that goes plus more (being able to watch videos, listen to music, taking pics, creating videos, playing games). Perhaps the folk who gave it a bad review did not spend time with their mylo and truly didn't understand how it works. Mylo will do you well...GO GET IT!!! You know you dig it!!

2 Star Rating  "Unfortunately too proprietary, not popular enough"2009-06-29
- Reviewed By kevaz
The browser and WiFi connectivity is quite slow. As a result, some functionality on the device in the form of apps (Think Palm's excellent apps over the past 7+ years) could have helped this device be more acceptable. But alas, the environment is too proprietary and there aren't enough users to drive any app work.

My son became very frustrated with it and gave up using it for even games. An HP Mini MIE quickly took Mylo's place even though the netbook is a larger footprint. We will all have a Palm Pre once the GSM model is released to the public. The Mylo will soon be on Craig's List or eBay.

Someone else here said it best, "Sony missed its shot at making the Mylo successful and missed it." Sorry enough, that's been Sony's tune since the mid-80's.

I took a chance on this, but decided it would be my last Sony purchase ever. RIP, Sony Walkman....
