| Cannon is an excellent brand, although this printer is slightly harder to navigate through projects, than my Lexmark. Overall I would have to say the quality of the prints are first class. I think the color values are better than other printers I have had (Lexmark, HP)or used. It is more expensive to buy ink, but with high quality performance and I don't mind paying extra for ink. I also like the "quiet" feature, why would anyone want to hear the printing?, I find it annoying, it's great! |

"This is an awesome photo printer!" | 2009-06-14 |

I bought this printer as a general-purpose family printer/scanner. This is my first all-in-one device. I have always been leery of multi-function devices thinking that they would be a "jack of all trades" but the "master of none." I may have also been biased because multifunction printer support when Mac OS X was released was pretty spotty. I tend to over research whatever I buy but the price, reviews, and specs for the MX850 were generally pretty good. I was not buying this as photo printer--that was going to be a future purchase. I bought the MX850 and got it set up on our network--my only complaint might be that setting up the printer on an ethernet is a little user unfriendly. I thought I would just try on a 4x6 print and was amazed at how good it was. So good, we got rid of our (very good) Epson PictureMate printer because of the higher versatility of the Canon. I then tried to push the envelope and bought some "pro" 8.5x11 photo paper. I was blown away by the results. For the first time since going digital, my pictures weren't trapped in the computer! I have made close to 100 large prints and was surprised how parsimonious with ink this printer is. In the spirit of full disclosure, I am an advanced amateur photographer. I color calibrate my Mac monitors. All my prints were created from Photoshop CS3 so all my images had been manipulated with respect to image size, contrast, and sharpness. I can not judge this printer on producing an image directly from a memory card or from less-capable image manipulation programs like iPhoto (which I do use for all my photo organization needs). However, every printer I have ever owned tends to darken photographs and the MX850 is no exception. When doing "fine art" printing from this device you may not get it right on the first print.
This printer does great on plain paper as well. In general the copying and scanning functions very well. The MP Navigator software works reasonably well but the UI is a little idiosyncratic--it doesn't have the polish of a true Mac OS X application. I have sent only one fax but that went without problem. |

The printer won't allow you to SCAN when the printer is out of ink. Why? You shouldn't need ink to scan straight to the computer!
Also, scanning documents written in pencil is nearly impossible. The image quality is poor.
I've used this printer for over a year. |

| Haven't had time to get into all the features yet, but what I have used has worked well, good quality scans and printing. Wish it covered the printheads/ink bottles by itself after a set period of non-use instead of the user having to remember to turn it off so the ink tanks/heads don't dry out. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the printer. |

Canon Pixma MX850 Office All-In-One Inkjet Printer (2436B002) I just purchased the MX-850 about a week ago from [...] for [...] plus free shipping. The printer itself makes great looking copies, and prints fantastic 4x6 Color photos using Canon's own branded Photo Paper Plus Glossy II. I just replaced my old Pixima IP3000 with the MX-850 and I must say that it is a great improvement over the earlier model especially when printing color photos. However, Canon's software is still confusing as heck when installing on my Imac. After installation on a Mac the software is no where to be found until you try to print something out. Then an icon magically appears on the desktop screen and it's not integrated with the scanning software which I had to find separately in applications folder. But all in all I give this printer 5 stars for its print quality. Scan quality is also good but not great. I bought the MX-850 over the new MX-860 because of its larger cl-8, and PGI-5 cartridges compared to the much smaller capacity ink cartridges in the new 860 which seems to be Canons way of screwing its customers into buying new smaller capacity ink cartridges that don't last as long. I also recommend that customers only buy Canon ink. I used cheaper non OEM ink cartridges on my ip3000 which clogged up its print heads and rendered the old printer unusable. |

"Excellent all in one; much better than HP" | 2009-05-14 |

I bought this all-in-one to replace an HP model because the HP feeder has never worked properly. Every time I had to fax or scan multi-page documents it was necessary to be right on top to be sure the feeder took one page at a time.
Success. The Canon feeder works flawlessly. In addition, the MX 850 is quietier and faster. The Canon has two paper trays that are easy to refill & allow two types of paper to be in the machine. The software loads quickly and is easy use. Not that it counts for much but it is slick looking printer.
Over-all; I'm impressed. A+
I've had the Canon for less than a month so will post an update in the future.
One potential concern is how fast the MX 850 goes through the five (5) ink cartridges needed. (Very easy to load). I assume the ink will last, proportionally, at least as long as the two cartridges in the HP. I also found a source for Canon replacement cartridges that is 1/3 the cost of Canon's.
Do price shop carefully; prices are all over the place... from under $200 to $400. I paid $300 & its looks like I over paid by a hundred bucks (in May, 2009). Still, the machine works so well I've not all that unhappy. I'd google the machine for sellers in addition to checking Amazon pricing. |

Don't fear refurbished. This product was packaged extremely well from the vendor... all movable parts were taped with quality tape that was easy to remove without residue. The instructions and cables were all there and the unit was spotless and pristine.
As an all-in-one, it does a great job on photos, faxes, and general printing. I haven't scanned yet but my son is the one who asked for this feature.
Overall, the product was a good buy and well worth the price given the large discount for buying a refurbished unit. |

| I installed the printer on my XP system. It worked flawlessly. I then up graded my system to Vista and re-installed the software. Again, it works flawlessly. Check out the specs for the printer at the Canon web site. They are all accurate. Photo quality is outstanding. Installation is a snap. First be sure to remove ALL the packing and protective foam and tape (there is a lot that is somewhat hidden). With the USB cable unplugged, install the software. Then connect the USB cable. The software will take you through this process step-by-step. Once this is complete, setup your fax info. I am connected directly from the printer to the PC, but you can also network the printer. Bottom line - great bang for the buck. |

I've had this printer now for a little over a month and still love it. It makes excellent copies. It scans photos very fast. I just scanned over 40 photos for a picture-book and the quality of the printing was excellent. I bought it from Amazon.com and saved a ton of money over other places. Plus there was free shipping and I received it in 2 days. I'm a very satisfied customer! |
