I bought this printer last June and used it as the primary printer/scanner in the home office. My setup includes a Windows 7 PC, Snow Leopard Mac, and XP machine. Canon makes it easy to download drivers for all operating systems on their support site. Hands down, it is the best personal-grade multifunction I've ever used and the only real issue I've had is the ink use. I've set the printer to minimize ink usage by default. My usage still justifies 5 black tank replacements and 2 color tank replacements last year. YMMV. I assume this is on par with most inkjets and will increase considerably if you print lots of photos.
Scan functionality is also important to me and this handles scanning very well. Both quality, speed, and ability to feed up to 35 pages at a time are top notch.
For a shared printer/scanner, having network connectivity is important. Configuring the Windows machines for network use was easier than with the Mac, but after everything was set, I've had no problems with it. For home office use, the MX850 has been excellent.
"This is an excellent product"

I purchased this printer about a year ago. I have had no problems with it at all. The printer is fast and the quality is good for both regular printing as well as photos. The copier part also does a good job. It is fast, both single and double-sided copies, with good quality.
Changing ther printer cartridges is also easy. I have not set up the fax piece yet. This is a quality product with good features.

This is the best printer I have ever owned. Photo printing is perfect and copying is also. I do not use the fax, so cannot comment on that.
"Excellent prints"

Great prints and scans. Reasonably quick. Beware that they package far more software than most folks need to run the machine. Try the packages out and then delete the ones that you won't use.
"Excellent multifunction-printer"

I actually bought this printer used as it compatible with my Mac. I simply love the multi-functions. I am able to scan images then email them as a zip file instead of faxing which makes it more secure. You can still fax the old-fashioed way but the scan feature makes it so much easier. The quality of the print is excellent & you can make double sided copies which I often need. Cannon products are superb & I have purchased many from printers to digital cameras.
"No Power after surge"

I see I'm not the only one to have lost all power after a surge. We just had two of them "die" at the same time. However, I discovered the machines are not dead. I called Canon, and they recommended unplugging all cables from the unit for an hour, and then plugging it directly into a wall outlet. We did this on both units, and behold, they are working again. It is a fail-safe feature in the unit. They are both working fine now, plugged back into their original outlets.
By the way, Canon is probably the best customer service I've ever received. They were ready for this, and without my asking, agreed to send out two new machines if this process failed.
However, the printers are working again. Excellent machines, fast, great paper loading options, good print quality, the software works well on a Mac (HP software has given us nothing but grief), and, as it turns out, they know how to protect themselves from power surges.
