"Refurbished Fujitsu Scansnap" | 2009-10-06 |

In general, the product works exactly as advertised: it scans all sorts of documents, and combined with DevonThink Pro Office for Mac's OCR capabilities, it does everything promised. The paperless office is definitely within reach with this unit, and I've been incredibly impressed with the speed of the scanning and the accuracy. It doesn't do such a great job with photos or graphics, but I bought the unit primarily to digitize old journal articles, manuscripts and home receipts.
SHIPPING/DELIVERY:
I appreciated the Amazon Marketplace sellers who could sell me this unit re-furbished without the bundled software packages of Adobe Aqcrobat Pro and Read IRIS, or the Cardiris software. I already own an OCR program and Acrobat, and did not want to shell out for the extra cost, I just wanted the unit itself. TechGalaxy delivered the unit as promised, in great condition, and earlier than expected even using standard shipping.
PERFORMANCE & INTEGRATION WITH MAC OS X (Leopard & Snow Leopard):
Set up and installation were very easy, just popped in the driver and installed the software drivers with no issues. In general, I did not experience the technical issues reported by other users using Snow Leopard. This may be because of my workflow with DevonThink OCR, I usually just scan to a folder and don't use the quick menu anyway.
Scanning documents and changing the settings between sets of what I'm scanning has been pretty easy through the scansnap settings menu. It FLEW through scanning a large file cabinet of things in a single afternoon, a project I thought would take an entire weekend!
The reason I didn't give it five stars is because of the issue where the unit does not like to scan longer receipts or times when it has paper jams. These are infrequent in general, and usually because of older crumpled receipts, or old articles that haven't been fanned enough (it does sometimes scan two pages at once instead of a single sheet at a time). So it's not really a "set & forget" solution, you do need to watch it or check your docs later. If you set up an automator workflow to scan to a folder, then set up the docs for OCR later at night when you're not working on the machine (OCR is super-time and processor intensive if you're doing a large batch all at once - best to save it for a time you don't need to be on at the same time). I have to say it is AWESOME to wake up in the morning to accurate OCR'd, searchable documents that once sat in your file cabinet gathering dust. I love that now I can reference old articles for my research with a few keystrokes! I'm a graduate student and cannot recommend this unit enough for academic uses. But be warned: refurbished units do NOT come with the Adobe Acrobat Professional software OR the the IRIS OCR software. |

| Although this is now an outdated model there were some things about this version which I wish were never changed. The software works great and the scanner has never given me a problem. I would say this is the best digital office product money can buy. |

| I purchased the Fujitsu Scansnap for my law practice last year and it is easily one of the best investments I've ever made. It is better than advertised. Amazingly, those product videos on Youtube are accurate. You stick the pages in, press the button, and you're done. It is very fast compared to the Brother MFC auto feed scanner I used to use. Now, is it a perfect device? No, occasionally I have problems with papers getting stuck, but you will have that problem with any device. And it also comes with Adobe Acrobat Professional which is a $300-$400 value. Get this, I've noticed that some people buy the Fujitsu Scan Snap, take the Adobe Acrobat Professional software for themselves, and sell the scanner on Ebay for nearly the purchase price (in some cases more than msrp). So, basically they get a free, or nearly free copy of Adobe Professional (I'm not recommending this, but just wanted to let you know what a great deal it is). I use the ScanSnap on a daily basis and I love it. It is about the size of a toaster. Some advice: NEVER, NEVER, NEVER put pages in your scan snap with staples!!!!!!! The staples will scratch the glass, and you will wind up with lines going up and down your pdf's and there's really nothing you can do about it (in color scans, that is). Also, you should get the F1 cleaner. You will need to use this cleaner occasionally to wipe down the glass, the rubber rollers, and the other parts. As you scan in a bunch of documents, the ink will start to accumulate on those parts and will make them sticky. Your pages will start to get stuck with increased frequence. Also, as you do a bunch of color scans, if you don't clean it, you'll see a bunch of really ugly lines going up and down your pdf. All you have to do is use the F1 cleaner and you're good to go. Use cloth material instead of napkins. |

Can't stand it - one of these days it will end up in pieces all over the place!
It CONSTANTLY double feeds and yes I have cleaned it, and cleaned it, and cleaned it per the instructions.
One page at a time it is great - but if you need to do more than one sheet reliably then GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!
I keep my blood pressure down and go down the hall and into our managers office and use the group printer scanner and save both my temper, and my time.

| I bought a refurbished S510M from a seller that I reached through an Amazon link and discovered upon receiving it that refurbished machines DO NOT come with the Adobe software, even though the seller's product description specifically stated that the Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional for Mac would be included. A letter from Fujitsu with the machine explained that refurbished machines do not include Adobe software, and that without it the scanner would have only "basic functionality." I am returning the scanner and will buy the newer non-refurbished version that includes the necessary software. |

| I am a remote worker and was really suffering while away from my main office without a scanner. Faxing is a hassle with a shared phone line. So this scanner has been amazing. Easy install and works like a champ with my mac air. I had a 10+page document two sided and it went through perfectly. I got one for my 86 year old father (pc user)and he loves it too. The price seems high, but my satisfaction has been high, so its worth it. |
