Product Description
Coming off the success of the Lumix TZ3, Panasonic has unleashed the DMC-TZ5 with higher resolution, sensitivity, and manual controls. From the outside, the TZ3 and the TZ5 look nearly identical -- both have the exact same dimensions but the TZ5 is 35 grams lighter at 245g. Internally, there are several key elements that have improved between the DMCTZ3 and the DMCTZ5. Face detection has been added to the DMCTZ5 which will help to keep the important things in focus, especially when you need to take quick candid shots and don't have time to double check that your subjects are in focus. Additionally, the maximum shutter time has been increased to 60 seconds, enabling long-exposure shots such as capturing lightning bolts or busy nighttime street scenes.

For storage, Panasonic increased the internal memory on the TZ5 to 50Mb (vs just 13Mb with the TZ3) for emergency situations when you max out your memory card. Transfer speeds have also improved with the aid of USB 2.0 compatibility.

Although the Lumix DMC-TZ5 still boasts a 3" LCD screen (like the TZ3) but the resolution of the screen has doubled, allowing for a even crisper image that gives a better feel for the photo you are about to take. Unchanged is the famous Lumix T-series MEGA Wide Zoom that covers a range of 28mm for wide angle shots and 280mm for zooming in on distant details.

For video, the DMC-TZ5s records at 30 fps at a whopping 1280x720 high definition resolution. Overall, the TZ5 brings several "big camera" features to its small compact body.

Here is what people are saying about the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5S 9MP Digital Camera with 10x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom
1 Star Rating  "Buyer Beware"2010-08-16
- Reviewed By Allison from United States
I've had this camera for 2 years. About 6 months ago, I noticed if I zoomed, the camera would say to shut it off and turn it back on.
About 3 months ago, the flash stopped working.
After googling, these are very common problems, which is nice if you are Panasonic and charge to fix this, but not so great if you are the customer.
Yesterday the camera stopped turning off unless I removed the battery.

I loved the camera while it worked. But after emailing Panasonic, they want me to mail them the camera (at my cost), and they will send me a refurbished one at my cost. I have not received what the cost is or if the refurbed camera is under warranty. After googling again, if you mail your camera back in, you'll have to pray for them to "realize you did this" and to get another camera.

I should have bought a Canon or a Sony.

The zoom died on our camera today despite the fact that we haven't used it that much.

I recently bought this camera and I love it. It is a little bigger than our last camera, but it's totally portable and it takes great pictures. Great for a mom with two active boys.

2 Star Rating  "Love this camera but very sensitive to dust/dirt..."2010-07-25
- Reviewed By NJ Mom from NJ
I have had this camera over 2 years and has been repaired once and is now unusable. While still under warranty, the lens would not close and a message of turn camera on and off again kept appearing. A grain of sand had gotten stuck in between the lens. Ok, lesson learned, kept it in a case. Second time a year later and no longer under warranty, same thing happened, a single speck of something is stuck in there and no longer works. I called customer service to see what it would cost to repair and it's about $150. If I decide to send it in, I will not get my repaired camera back, but a refurb. No thanks.

Other than the sensitivity to dirt (I am a pro photographer and treat all my equipment with utmost care), this is a great camera. Clear sharp photos, and love the fact you can zoom while using the video with no limitations as to video length while recording.

Would think about another one, but don't want to be frustrated if a speck of dirt gets in the lens mechanisms again.

1 Star Rating  "Dissappointed"2010-05-05

I was very excited to purchase this camera based on all the excellent reviews. However, the camera performed much worse than our old digital Cannon purchased 5 years before. Cannon always took sharp images and recording movies was not a problem. Lumix constantly underperformed; it was very hard to take a sharp image--the majority of them would come out grainy, no matter what was the lighting. I've tried to adjust the settings but nothing worked. Could not figure out how to record movies either--they came out as a still photo. Maybe I've missed something, but it shouldn't be so difficult and require you to look into the manual. On Cannon you just switched to the movie mode and voila, everything worked. Here, although it would appear that the movie was being recorded, no movie was actually recorded. I am actually happy that it finally broke and now we have to buy a new one. I would never go for Panasonic Lumix again.

Why do I hafta keep reminding people to use the video feature on their still camera? Why? Because they don't have this camera.

Told people bout this camera years before it came along. Big lens, HD video, all in a pocket size.
Didn't know which brand would be first, but props to Panasonic for getting there first.
Going on 3 years later, it's still kicking butts and takin names long after better versions of the same, and copycats from Canon and now Nikon.
My little blue wonder is still a joy to use. A beautiful camera for travel. And no failures at all.
Many iMovies later, my friends are amazed.
Beats the heck outa my D90's video, a bit slo w/this lens in the dark for stills (take a pocket tripod), but look at what it all does in that small body.
Quick menu feature is nice. Battery life is very good. Stills are not Nikon/Canon quality, but plenty close for all but the most anal.
Just a huge bang for the buck.
Thanx Panasonic, you Rocked it on this puppy! A history maker in my book.
With this success I'm going for a GF-1!
