"Olympus LS-10 for recording class lectures"
2009-11-11

I am in a Masters program, so I wanted to add this review for people looking
primarily to record lectures, as opposed to music recordings. People in an
undergrad or graduate program that need to clean up hand-written or typed notes
should give the LS-10 consideration over the WS 500.
It costs $100 and change more, but if you have to attend several lectures
on a daily basis like I do, it is well worth the extra money.
The Olympus LS-10 is a much better lecture recorder than the Olympus WS-500 series.
I've used both extensively for recording lectures in small, medium, and large rooms
with varying acoustics. You can clearly hear the prof. and all persons even in the back
of the room when they ask questions. It was really important for me that the voices were
clear and background noise was minimum. Otherwise, it can take much longer to listen
through a recorded 2 hour lecture, especially if you need to focus on technical words and phrases.
The recording on the LS-10 with default settings + Mic sense High and Low Cut On work best.
Also, the SD memcard works great. Just push/click on it and it pops out, then insert it into
the memcard slot on your PC or most printers now have them. I record in WMA format and then
upload the 100Mb + files to a 'free" website MegaUp_____. Then you can just send links to classmates
or whomever that wants to also listen to the recording. Yesterday I recorded 3 classes, total of 5 hours
of lectures. After class I went to the library, popped the memcard out of the LS-10 inserted it into
my Laptop and then uploaded the files to the MegaUp___ site. Total process was done in the background
and only took about 16 minutes. Then I sent links to other classmates. If you are collaborating with
other students in your grad program, this is a very good way to leverage the LS-10.
Finally, the quality build is very high. Buttons are metal, not plastic. You have the sense the LS-10
will work for a long time without issues. I can listen with ear-buds on and work the menu with very
little effort. Altogether, the LS-10 does a great job of recording and playing back recordings. The menu
is excellent. And, it comes with a good carrying bag big enough to fit the ear-buds and an extra pair of
batteries.
On the con side, the speakers on the bottom of the LS-10 are very weak, almost worthless. You will definitely
be playing back the recording through ear-buds or on a PC's speakers.
Overall would highly recommend the Olympus LS-10 to any grad student for lecture recordings.
"Songwriters Best Friend"

I was using a Sony Mini Disc recorder with an external mic for years to capture my ideas. Since I switched to the LS-10 I have been very satified with it in every way. The built in mics are outstanding, and the sound quality is very pleasing to the ears. The size is perfect. It fits in the accesory compartment of a guitar case and feels great in your hand. Easy navigation with an easy to read screen. It is always within arms reach when I have a guitar in my hand so when something starts to flow, I reach for the LS-10, turn it on and hit record. No waiting for it to fire up, no drive noise, no fumbling with an external mic, just reach and record.
Getting the files to your computer couldn't be easier. Just open the units folder and drag files where you want them. It is also compatible with Windows Media Player for syncing options.
The LS-10 is this songwriters best friend.
"Actual user"

I bought this unit mainly for taking notes. As a photographer I wanted to add quality audio to digital wedding photo albums. What is key in this great little unit is that I can plug my earphones in and scroll through the menu with the unit in pause and choose the settings that best fit the environment; home, church or reception. No one ever thinks of recording those intimate talks between the bride and her mother just before the service and adding them to music and actual photos for sale later. I attach an adaptor with quarter-20 tripod mounts on each end to the bottom of my camera and then to the LS 10 mount for hands free recording and edit it later. Please don't boost my idea......
The only issue I have is the fear of dropping it or having it stollen.

Worked perfectly right out of the box. Great for recording my barbershop chorus and improving my own contribution to the mix. Also worked great for recordng my wife's 94-year old father singing his best version of a prayer-like ballad.
"Records Music Well"

I have used the LS-10 recorder to record my trumpet and French horn practice and band rehearsals. It has worked well and the price is very reasonable compared to the competition. Play back on the recorder speakers is not very good, but it is excellent when using stereo headphones.
I have smaller Olympus digital recorders (M-311 & M-321) that do a very good job of recording music when fitted with the optional stereo microphone. These digital recorders are lighter, more compact, & have a long battery life. They are not as sturdy as the LS-10; lack the capacity of the LS-10; have limited options on recording formats; and the LS-10 has a built in stereo microphone. You might want to consider one of these recorders or the M-331 for convenience and to save a few bucks.
This is one of those purchases that gets 5 stars for the value proposition. For $200 you're getting an awesome A/D converter in an a tight package. Could this product be better? Not for the money it can't. I now carry it with me all the time.
