I got it after extensive research. It worked wonderful for first few days but then at times it was completely lost. It would simply forget which way I was headed and would start recalculating even though I was following its precise directions! At one point I got so annoyed that I was almost on the verge of returning it but then the problem self corrected. So far working fine otherwise.

This is Day 1 for me. Not much instruction comes with the unit, but it's intuitive. If you've a cellphone or a digital camera, then you should be able to figure out how this works. The voice directions are clear and easy to follow. If I don't follow its directions, the re-calculate happens within seconds. br /br /One thing I'm concerned is that it doesn't say which side of the street the destination is on. I went to 2 POI (a grocery store and a hotel) and both times it didn't give that info. I hope it does have this feature when I use it at other places.br /br /I wish it doesn't take so many menus to change from faster time to shortest distance and vice versa. It should be an option that's prompted for every route (like Magellan's).br /

The Nuvi 255W worked great the first day; however, the second day it deleted all the mapping system. Garmin tech support had to connect to PC to restore mapping on unit. They are working on the problem.

Bought this unit to use in rental cars when traveling. Used for 1st time in CA. Worked great- found all addresses, but wish it gave you more than one turn at a time. Would help when turns are close together.

I ordered one of these from Amazon a few weeks ago, after getting lost on a trip when the road atlas I had did not have enough detail for the area I was in. This is my first GPS, and I am fully satisfied with it. It takes a minute or so to lock onto the satellites when I use it in a rental car after flying out of state, but once it finds the location it locks on quickly after being turned off for any amount of time. It is intuitive and easy to use, and I find the voice to be intelligible, with sometimes funny pronuciations ("boulevard" is a tough one for the English accent!). Occasionally it will not have a newer point of interest, or still show a restaurant that has closed, but given the multitude of these in its memory, that is not a real concern. You can't rely on its literal directions every time you use it, but for an unfamiliar area, it is a worthwhile accessory. I also like how it recalculates directions if you choose to diverge from the original directions.

The 255W does everything advertised, and does it well. My only gripes are the lack of certain features that could have been implemented easily at virtually no cost, like MP3/Audiobook capability. That, and that the documentation is barely adequate.br /br /But as far as the primary GPS functionality is concerned, this is one excellent piece of hardware. The revised chipset allows the GPS to make satellite connections quickly. The speech synthesis is more than satisfactory.br /br /I would strongly urge those considering this product to purchase the "Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount." This will not only make it trivial to move the unit between two or more cars, but the lack of a window-mounted suction cup means no tell-tale ring-shaped mark to alert potential thieves to the fact you may have a rather nice piece of electronics in the car.br /br /If I could give this unit 4.5 stars, I would.

I bought this GPS just before a trip to CO. It worked flawlessly except for a couple of minor things: 1) The maps are not completely up to date. In Ft. Collins it tried to get me to drive down an empty meadow. 2) The POI's are not up to date either. I was looking for a Target in Denver and although there was one not a mile away (recently built), it tried to send me to one several miles away. If you have an address it will get you there. If not, you'll take your chances.

I have never owned any GPS prior to this unit, so my opinion is more about owning a GPS than owning a Garmin 255w. I did some research and finally decided to buy this unit, and after using it for a couple of weeks, I am really happy with my purchase. Although sometimes it gives weird instruction, (Like it always wants me to go all the way around at the beginning of the trip even if there is a shorter route when I leave from my house.) but it always takes me to the right place eventually. It is such a relief that I don't need to think about how to get to places anymore. Garmin 255W is fast, and I haven't had situation where I lost signal. I also love that it speaks the street names. It also can display and speak many languages. I am thinking about buying another one of these for my parents because their native language is Chinese and Garmin 255W speaks and display it! Note: It doesn't come with wall power outlet. The only way you can charge it is by using the car charger. If you plan on using it outside of the car a lot, you might want to consider getting the optional wall power charger.
