"Samsung BD-P1500: a $250 lesson?" | 2009-10-29 |

I chose this blu-ray player 1)out of faith in its "SAMSUNG" brand and 2)for its great feature sets. What I overlooked were the red flags concerning the BD-P1500s many service issues, many of which revolved around firmware updates and warranty issues.
I plucked the next paragraph nearly verbatim from one of a dozen other user forums I've visited regarding the SAMSUNG BD-P1500), as it described perfectly the countless problems I've experienced from the day the BD-P1500 was unpacked: "The player freezes mid-film. By "freezes", I mean locks up. No stop, no eject, no nothing. I have to turn off the power just to get the disc out. The over portion of attempts it now either doesn't load the disc at all or again "freezes" reading "play" with no image or sound. I hear a repetitive sticatto clicking noise within the machine. If I turn it off I can regain enough function to eject the disc. The firmware is current and the tech had me perform the rest; to no avail. I understand that occasionally a relatively good product line will have a lemon or two...". SAMSUNG does not seem to be addressing the many defective issues with this unit.
I have also experienced lip-synch problems as well as the repeated "freezing" issue. Almost without exception, we have never watched a Blu-Ray disc without interuption or complete failure (that's in the nearly three months we have owned the unit!). Each time I have contacted SAMSUNG support (via their online "Live Help") I've received courteous attention, though ultimately fruitless advice. In almost every case I was prompted to update the firmware (even if I had already updated to the most current version, the same instructions were repeated).
I'm fully versed in the so-called "emerging technology" of Blu-Ray, and I have certainly been patient, both with the player itself and with SAMSUNG support. Patience has not been my allie: My BD-P1500 is currently in a California facility awaiting service. Although the unit was purchased new on 7/27/09 with a full 90 parts and labor warranty, the service facility called to inform me that SAMSUNG was reporting the warranty on Labor had lapsed, and I must pay $69 to have the unit repaired. I have contested the decision and re-faxed my original 7/27 invoice to the service company. Now we will wait and see... SAMSUNG, are you listening? Do you care?
Again, even the best companys can produce an occasional lemon. But given the track record of my own SAMSUNG player, and the many reports of others, I would never purchase this model again, and I would think long and hard before purchasing another SAMSUNG item, be it a Blu-Ray player, HDTV or whatever. Service is the deal breaker in this situation and it is notable that PHILIPS offers a 1 year Limited Parts and Labor warranty on its Blu-Ray players, as does SONY and LG.
Simply put, when the decision boils down to judging quality and service, a 90 warranty doesn't cut it.

"Firmware update permanently breaks DVD, CD capabilities:" | 2009-10-24 |

| I received this player with a 650 Samsung 46" LCD television I purchased. Aside from taking quite a long time to load a Blu-Ray DVD, I was fairly happy with the unit. CDs and regular DVDs played fine. However after updating the unit's firmware, I could no longer play DVDs or CDs but continued to play Blu-Ray discs fine. Assuming it was only a software error and seeing that many other folks online had the same problem, I decided to simply wait for a new version of the firmware to be released that would fix the problem. However, after installing several new firmware versions over the past 6-8 months, I still can't play DVDs or CDs (I get a "no disk" error). I decided to contact SAMSUNG service and was informed that since the unit is no longer under service warranty (only parts and labor) I would need to pay to ship the unit back and then pay an estimated $88 for repairs. I declined and continue to use my old DVD player for regular DVDs. This is the first problem I've had with SAMSUNG products but I can hardly recommend this unit to other folks. If you do buy this, my advice is to not do any firmware updates! |

| I've had this player for less than a year and it stopped reading discs (blue-ray & DVD). I sent it back to Samsung who said the parts are under the manufacturer's warranty but the labor, which will cost $165, is not. Needless to say, I will be purchasing an LG player. Very disappointed. Also, be forewarned that my brother recently bought a different model Samsung Blue-ray and had a poor experience when it completely stopped working after a firmware update. Just don't buy from Samsung until they produce a good product. |

| When Blue Ray players were close to $1000 we just purchased a playstation 3 and used that which worked great, but we usually kept it downstairs where we had a complete gaming setup. We did not want to disconnect it every time we wanted to see a movie and especially when we had a month of Netflix so we picked up this Samsung player. I had read that one of the major drawbacks was the load time, but I found this not to be true. We watched 24 Netflix movies on one month and not a single load time was very long at all. Actually the load time on the PS3 is longer for a lot of games. We are very happy with the video on a 65" screen. I think that maybe the update we received may have cured the long load time. I am computer savy and the online download was a little difficult. You had to follow the instructions to the letter. You could not take the shortcut by dragging the file and downloading it. Once I figured that out, it was easy. I ordered the download disk just to make sure though and they sent it right away. We have used it a lot and for the price I think that it is a great bargain!!!! |

"Basic player" | 2009-09-26 |

| I bought this player back in Nov. of 2008. It was my first blu ray player. It is in my opinion, one of the nicest looking players out there. Its display and blue lighting are beautiful. It matches my DVR from Direct TV perfectly. The first disk I tried, "For Your Eyes Only" from Fox didn't work. Seems to be some java issue with it. Other disks play well though. Picture is good and sound is ok. A lot of disks take forever to load and the player is quite noisy while loading. Upgrading the firmware was a bit of a hassle. I would download the update from Samsung's website to a thumb drive. The thumb drive is plugged into the rear of the unit and all you do is follow on screen instructions. Thankfully I never encountered any of the problems other people have had with firmware updates. My last "straw" with the player though occurred when I tried to play "Crank2" on it last week. The problem with this disk is well documented but the bottom line is it could be played on just about every player with a bit of fiddling. Not so on the Samsung. I did eventually get the movie to play but couldn't use any of the special features. I replaced this player with a Sony S560 recently. It played "For Your Eyes Only" and "Crank2" right out of the box. I just couldn't deal with the uncertainty of the BDP-1500 any longer. |
