Editorial Review
Maximize the power and potential of your home network with the HP EX470 MediaSmart Server, which enables you to conveniently centralize your files and access them from multiple PCs in your home. Based on AMD Live processing power, the MediaSmart Server enables you to back up your home's PCs as well as share and enjoy digital music, home videos and photos from any computer or entertainment system on a home network. The server also has the expandability to grow with your family's changing needs.

The stylish HP MediaSmart Server easily fits into your living room or office decor.

Its small size will fit on top of even the most crowded desk, and it offers wireless access when connected to a Wi-Fi router (via the Gigabit Ethernet port). This sleek, streamlined micro-tower design is perfect for use in the home office or the living room, and its perforated steel exterior panels provide cool, quiet operation. The EX470 MediaSmart Server features a 500 GB internal hard drive (SATA, 7200 RPM), 512 MB of installed DDR2 RAM, four hard drive bays for additional expansion using off-the-shelf SATA I or II hard drives, a Gigabit Ethernet port for ultra-fast networking (and connection to a wireless router), four USB 2.0 ports (1 on the front, 3 on the back) for connecting to additional hard drives, and an and an eSATA port for high-speed data transfer to external storage devices--up to 6 times faster than existing solutions.

It's quick and easy to set up your HP MediaSmart Server and create up to 10 user accounts using the Microsoft Windows Home Server software. You can also open a predefined Guest account for additional file sharing capabilities. The HP MediaSmart Server also lets you set up your own secure personal web address to allow file access by remote users.

Easily Enhance Your Network

Expand your storage possibilities with the MediaServer's four hard drive bays. Every PC on your network will have the Control Center software, giving users the ability to browse shared folders on the HP MediaSmart Server, add photos to the HP Photo Webshare and perform an immediate backup of their computer. Set the access privileges for each user at the shared-folder level to allow Read/Write, Read Only or No Access. You also control the remote access privilege for each user. Approved users will then be able to remotely access shared files and even applications on their home PC through a secure connection from any Internet-connected PC.

Files accidentally deleted can be easily found on the backup image and copied to your PC. Here is what people are saying about the HP EX470 MediaSmart Home Server (500 Gb)
2 Star Rating  "Great Server Big Problem If You Have To Repair"2009-09-19
- Reviewed By User: A1HNJHHHUO0OM0
Great server as long as it works. Mine lasted 1.5 years, looks like the power supply went, or possibly the motherboard. I called HP to get the parts, they do not sell the parts to the public. You have no choice but to send this unit to HP for repair. With the diagnostics charge and parts it will at least cost you half the price of a new server. If I had of known this I would have bought a more standard computer based server or built my own. I will tear this unit apart however and see if I can get the part number off the power supply and do a search for it.

5 Star Rating  "Must have for any family!"2009-09-06

I have bought two of these servers now (one for my parents and one for myself). This is a terrific product for everyone. It's a must have for families with more than one computer (pc or mac). The most basic function is backing up all the computers each night which allows for easy switching of computers and no worries of loss of data. Additionally, its easy to share pictures with friends/family. Allows you to share full quality downloads with everyone (i.e., not reducing picture quality by uploading on facebook, etc.). The overall setup process is also very simple. HP has released newer versions of the product which have more RAM which is very helpful.
If you are very tech savvy, than the sky is unlimited in regards to how to use this server. I use it to stream my large digital music collection to several rooms in my home via squeezecenter and stream my movie collection to my home theater setup. I highly recommend this product.

5 Star Rating  "Most of the issues have been addressed"2009-04-16
- Reviewed By User: A33IELDCWUL6XY
I bought this server on sale about two months ago and have not been disappointed with its basic functionality.

For PCs, it has worked flawlessly as an image backup server. For media, it's fantastic to have my movies, music and photos centralized in a reasonably safe place. Additionally, the server is VERY expandable (storage size), which is a distinct advantage over the second gen which does not support eSATA port multiplication (recognizing multiple drives on one port). It also will automatically check your iTunes collection, and add new songs, if you can't be bothered to organize your music manually to the server.

For Macs, you can mount the server shares as separate drives and save to them just as easily as any other drive on your Mac. Most of the PC functions are not available to the Mac (auto backup, etc.) but the user community is large and helpful via many forums - you can find workarounds. The console is available by web browser. Later models of the server (EX485/7), do a somewhat better job of integrating with Macs than this model and the processor and memory are more appropriate for digital media serving on a large scale in the home.

You'll probably want to upgrade the memory for this server as soon as you can - dealt with in the user community forums/blogs very well.

However, I can't really say enough good things about the server, but it is important to note that many of the negative reviews regarding the server deal with issues that have been resolved within the past year. This is a great entry point if you want to make your home digital media centric.

Hope this helps.

1 Star Rating  "DO NOT BUY THIS SERVER"2009-03-02
- Reviewed By User: A1RYQ6O6769MD2
My HP EX475 MediaSmart Server developed a loud noise after only 15 months. I was suprised to discover that HP DOES NOT OFFER POST WARRANTY SERVICE SUPPORT & DOES NOT PROVIDE PARTS FOR REPAIR. I now own a $700.00 paperweight. HP does not mention in their sales literature that it does not offer out of warranty service and it does not tell you that it will not sell repair parts to other service vendors.

So......DO NOT BUY THIS SERVER......not only is it prone to failure, you cannot get it fixed.

First I have to say the Mediasmart Server did not work with my system out of the box. I have two desktop computers, a laptop, a xbox 360 and a Zune all connected to it. It took 3 calls to HP to get everything working properly but my experience with the HP technical support was outstanding. I didn't put me on hold, they knew what they were doing and they were patient with me as we went through checking connections and modifying files. Once set up it has worked perfectly and has helped centralize all my media and files and make sure everything is backed up. It is also nice having access to all my files over the internet. I would definitely recommend this product.

4 Star Rating  "Does what it does well"2009-02-07
- Reviewed By User: A3J3MXMJBES15W
I think the Home Server does what it does quite well. Easy to use and set-up to do the basics. For the more tech savvy folks, there seem to be lots of ways to get under the covers and extend the functionality to do more. I still haven't found the perfect solution to one music library for all my devices. This is very close. If only I could come up with a cleaner way to let my Xbox 360 MCE access the music library without reliance on my Vista box, it would be perfect. Xbox native media player can get to the content fine, but for Media Center Extender to see it takes a little more magic.

I did the memory upgrade and it was pretty straight forward with instructions found on the internet.
