I just recently got into the audiophile world and I have been making numerous upgrades to my home theater. The sound on my Samsung LN40A550 was terrible and to really bring out the full-value of this TV...you need great audio!
I purchased a pair of Klipsch Synergy B-2 bookshelves, a Dayton sub-80 and this Marantz receiver.
What can I say...these guys know what they're doing. They are industry leaders when it comes to the production of high-end receivers.
This was my first home theater build and I live in a small apartment so my budget was pretty scarce. Plus, I did not want to anger my neighbors so I opted for some components that will deliver clear, quailty sound.
When researching receivers, I had a few particular things to keep in mind: 1) $300-400 budget 2) Quality build 3) HDMI - specifically a receiver that does both VIDEO/AUDIO
Connections: I had my Time Warner Cable box, PS3 all connected to Marantz and then the HDMI out to the Samsung LCD. NOTE that you cannot access the OSD through HDMI, but it can be easily done through component for easy setup.
Picture quaily and audio quality are not effected by the HDMI hookups to the receiver and out to the TV.
Sports look fantastic, blu-ray movies are jaw dropping and the Marantz delivers great sound. It doesn't hurt that this is one great looking receiver as well.
For someone on a budget and who wants good features in a receiver, I highly recommend the Marantz SR4002. You will not regret this purchase...

Great receiver. The only problem is that I can't use my HDMI cable to view the set up screen, otherwise excellent in every way. Movies and music sound terrific. pretty easy to get up and running and the remote controls my TV, so at least I can get rid of one remote. I bought it for$500.00 and considered it well worth it. I will buy Marantz in the future.

I did a lot of research and listening to different receivers before making my final decision. I ended up buying the Marantz because of it's excellent sound quality and features. The remote can be "taught" from other remotes and the HDMI switching is easy. At first I didn't think it would have enough power to drive my Paradigms, but I was wrong. It delivers a clean power to them that fills my house with beautiful sound.
"Excellent for movies, OK for music"

I purchased this as a replacement for a NAD T742 that was plagued by quality issues. I will base me review as compared to the NAD.
The Marantz is much more feature rich. HDMI and Component video switching is something the NAD lacked. It has multiple surround modes that I will never use, but I'm sure someone might like them. The auto-setup feature took a few tries, but when it completed successfully everything looked, and sounded great.
For movies, I prefer the Marantz over the NAD. DTS tracks were awesome. Dialog was much more clear and stood out from the rest of the track well.
For music, I prefer the NAD. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't use the surround modes. So music was tested in stereo only. The Marantz was more clear, especially at low volume. However, the NAD gave a more live feel to the music and seemed to fill not only the room, but the whole house much better.
Overall, for the price, the Marantz is a supurb, feature rich, AV receiver. What it lacks in stereo reproduction it more than makes up for in it's surround sound performance.
