I ordered the Acer Aspire One with Linux so that it would arrive right before the weekend and I would have time to figure it out. It booted up quickly and when I plugged it into my Linksys router got connected immediately without disturbing either TIVO or the desktop pc. Being basically lazy, technology-wise, I didn't have to fiddle with anything. I bought this particular model because it is not Windows and so far I haven't found anything to dislike about it.

I just got my acer aspire one in the mail last night. I have to say that im mighty impressed so far... I thought that it was going to be cool by some of the reviews that i had read it seemed like it was going to be good all around. Well i like it. I was going to buy the newer one, the saphire blue one with 160 gig.. ect. But the shipping time that amazon told me was like halloween or the week of.. If im going to spend the money to buy a new computer im going to get one right now not a month later... especially when i payed for overnight... lame.. this one seems like its going to fit all my needs. I will buy a bigger battery for it for sure when ever they drop in price.. i would imagine after christmas.. i havent had the time to see how it works on something like photoshop.. but i was downlaoding files at 158kbs on a p2p and then i wathced igor on watch movies .net and it played flawlessly..anyways you should definatley hop for the 6 cell battery. as it seems like a good thing to have. nothing wrong with the 3 cell.. but i would love to have like 4 more hours on a charge..br / There are a couple things that i dont like to much... Idont like the mouse all that much.. the track pad is fine the scroll function works well. But the mouse buttons positioned on the side of the trackpad are kinda odd, it is hard to get used to since you cant really click and drag like noarmal... i will have a usb mouse tommorrow.. but for the most part using your other hand is fine..br / I like playing video games and such and havent tried to run anything yet... no time to play around to much.. But i have an idea of what to expect.. this isnt a gaming machine by any means..but im sure that it will play some of the older games that i enjoy.. especially if someone says that they have played WoW on theres. br / I will update with my photoshop and illustrator results..

I bought an Acer Aspire one with a 120 GB hard drive, and the 3 cell battery as I wanted as light weight computer as possible. This comes with 1 GB of ram. Actually I think this is just as fast or perhaps faster than my 2 GB Vista machines with a AMD Turion dual core processor. It certainly boots up faster than a Vista machine and XP has been tweeked enough to have most of the "safety features" of Vista. The screen is small 8.9 " but is clear and readable. The keyboard is suprisingly large and useable. Some have complained of fan noise. My machine has minimal noise. This is an amazing machine and for the money, you cannot beat it. The two negatives are a difficult to use pointing device. The touch area is fine but the left and right "mouse buttons" are really too small. Probably the best solution is to use a USB mouse. The second negative which is minor consists of easy smudging with fingerprints on the case. Understand also this machine does not have an optical drive so you will need one to load programs. Would I purchase again - you bet.

I am a college professor who must have computer access. College-issued laptop is so heavy that I hated taking it anywhere. I was investigating purchasing an extra power cord for my College-issued Thinkpad (so that at least I wouldn't have to schlep the weight of the AC adapter back and forth) when my eye was caught by the Aspire one. I had been lusting after an EEE, but after looking at all the features of the Aspire one and its great price, I decided to buy it. (Afterall, the darn power cord was going to cost me almost half the the cost!) I was a bit nervous about Linux and open office, but decided to try it. It's been great. It is wonderful not to have constant antivirus software updates slowing me down. As long as I remember to watch how I save things, I have been able to move between the Microsoft XP operating system and the Linux software with no problems. The learning curve was really not too steep. I use the internet, write, interface with BlackBoard and my email server, create presentations, and shop without problems. I have not had any wireless problems (except at a Holiday Inn and I think the problem was theirs. No problem picking up the wireless in other hotels). I'm not a game user so I cannot speak to that aspect of computing. The convenience is wonderful. I have recently been trying to figure out a way to download educational podcasts intended for use with iTunes, but from a brief survey with Google, it seems as if there may be a work around for that. Small key board really doesn't bother me. My old dell was WAY louder, so it seems very quiet to me. br /Only drawbacks: fingerprints do show: keeping a microfiber cloth handy restores the luster; I don't trust the shock absorbing qualities of the skimpy envelop it comes in, so something neoprene is probably warranted (and since it was so new when I bought it, accessories were not widely available); and the battery life isn't stellar. (I just plug it in when I get there.) A tech friend of mine suggests turning off the Wifi if you're not using it to conserve power (I have done it, but I'm not sure it makes a difference.)I would buy again in a heart beat!

As a replacement for a PDA it is very good. Takes a little longer to boot than a palm, but it does so much more. Doesn't fit on my belt, but is small and comes with a protective sleeve. Battery and time between charges is the only disappointment, but sleep mode allows quick wake-up and saves power, so it lasts all day. The keyboard is good and the display is also impressive. I haven't gotten the internal microphone to work with the web-cam, but my palm couldn't touch this thing, so I will invest a little more time getting this linux based device working as a laptop and pda replacement.

I bought this laptop, Acer Aspire one 8.9" Mini Laptop, I like it so much, compared with MSI 10", this one the keyboard is much better for typing. And it looks so clean and cute and pretty. But only several days, the wireless sign was gone, couldn't find it anywhere, and the system also couldn't find it. I did the recover, and it's fine again. Then less then half a day after I did the recover, the wireless sign was gone again. I called Acer service center, and explained it to him, he told me to check step by step, then he said the laptop had problem, he suggested me to return it or replace it. Then when I was ready to pack it, the wireless came back itself again, so I kept it for one day, then the wireless was dissappeared again. Finally I call Amazon and told them this laptop's problem and hope they won't sell it to other customers after they receive it, hope they would send it to the Acer shop to fix that problem.

Exceeded expectations. This is great for a "throw it in the bag and go surf for a weekend getaway or to do a few emails". Adapted to the keyboard quickly. I read too much bitching about the touchpad - it is fine and so are the buttons. I have the low memory Linux version and I find it is very speedy and very quiet. I love how cool it runs. Big attention getter where-ever you take it. Screen is really nice. Battery life could be better. As a windows power user I appreciate the super fast Linux Boot time and easy and reliable shutdown. The WiFi presented no problems even on my WEP enabled network. Buy the cheap Linux version - you'll be glad you did. My non-techie wife loves it (it was primarily for her). Solid construction. The white doesn't show fingerprints (I bet the blue does). We fought over it this weekend at a hotel - even though my big poweruser laptop was at the foot of the bed. This thing is just so convenient and cool. I must admit I get a thrill using something that behometh Microsoft or that arrogant jerk Jobs doesn't have a hand in.

This little laptop (netbook) does exactly everything that I was looking for. The portability is unmatched. There is no need for a separate laptop bag as this computer fits into almost any bag you might already be carrying with you. The screen is extremely crisp and and makes it easy to read text. The Linpus OS is, however, extremely limited. The system was designed for ease of use and access to the features that the laptop was intended. Even with the modest processor and RAM allotment, the hardware adapts well to any OS change. I switched to a version of Ubuntu, and aside from a couple minor (and fixable) incompatibilities, my Aspire One is now a fully functional laptop. With the upgraded OS, I was able to easily network this computer onto my home Wifi and and have access to all the files on my desktop. This feature really eliminates the need for a lot of physical storage on the laptop itself. The 8gb SSD is more than enough space to run any OS and store most of the files that someone would want on a device such as this. At the time that I purchased this laptop, I also ordered a 16gb SD card for additional storage, but I rarely use it. br /br /There have been some comments/complaints on the internet about the incessant fan noise from this computer. I am really feeling that this problem is limited to the XP version with the HDD. The Linpus version with the SSD is extremely quiet. br /br /Only con: Battery life. 2-2.5 hours is the longest amount of time this computer will run on a single charge. Be prepared to keep it plugged in at home or work and never stray too far from an outlet.br /br /4.5/5 Stars. For the cost, it cannot be matched.

Tough decision.br /br /Other negative on all the Aspire One units is the highly reflective screen. Renders the unit pretty much useless when outside. Camera image on screen is not mirror image.br /br /On the positive side: light weight, crystal clear screen [in the right light], good keyboard feel, reasonably fast response time. Performs as advertised for internet and email. br /br /Get the six-cell unit. |
