I have been interested in the Slingcatcher since its release and I am now the very happy owner of one due to some recent price drops. This product does exactly what I was hoping for. I am an expat in West Africa and tv here is not the greatest. I have been a Slingbox user since last year but was hoping that this product would give me a more natural television watching experience. I does that and more. Now, you have to understand that this product will not produce the same quality as your HD Cable Box running directly into your 42" HDTV. However, it will allow you to very comfortably watch what is playing on your Cable Box (or other devices) via your Slingbox on your TV hundreds (or more) miles away. The people at Slingmedia have come up a great product to compliment the Slingbox. In addition to the "catching" function the device can also "project" what is on your computer (think Youtube, Hulu, etc.) using a very friendly little app called Sling Projector. In spite of some earlier reviews this function seems to be working fine. I believe it was fixed with a firmware update though I am not sure. The other big function is the ability to attach a USB storage device and play various video formats (divx, wmv, etc.). If you are an expat with a good internet connection this product will be great for you. Mine is about 1Mbps and it works fine (the upstream on the other is 1Mbps). Buy the Slingcatcher and you will not be disappointed.

Hello,

I bought this device around 2 months ago. Installation was so easy, getting it running is a snap. The quality of video normally depends on the internet speed. It can run up to 12 hours straight (according to my experience!) without any problems.

I didn't try any of the other features this device offers, the only feature I tried is connecting it to my slingbox remotely.

I spent a lot of time researching this device. In general the reviews are not very good. However, I was looking for a means of watching my Tivo in the bedroom. The Tivo is downstairs in the entertainment center with the HDTV and sound system. I have tried video senders and video baluns. None of them worked reliably. That is what led me to the Slingcatcher. This is not an inexpensive item as you need a slingbox to go along with it. I also bought the Slingbox Solo. Setup, of both boxes, was very straight forward and within an hour both boxes were functional and communicating with each other. The catcher is attached to a 27" LCD TV. The picture is ok and not a problem to watch. The only negative thing is the response time to a remote command. There is a time lag from pushing a button on the remote until the Tivo responds. This really only becomes a problem when FF a show since by the time you press play to stop the FF it has gone a few seconds past the point you wanted to stop at. With practice you can time the command. I also tried the sling media feature. I put a video on a USB key and it played flawlessly. I do not know how well the catcher works if it was removed from the home network and used in a remote location via the internet. But I have no plans for that. My needs were simple and so far so good.

I am surprised that the catcher offers such a good picture on my 50" Pioneer plasma. I am using the Slingbox original to stream via Verizon Fios with a 5 mb upload speed. Downstream is Time Warner cable with a 25 mb speed. Therefore, my results may not be duplicated with slower internet pipes. I have the catcher set to 1080i and the TV converts it to 1081p. Some minor jaggies, but not what I anticipated. May get a pro-hd, but was going to wait for 1080p resolution. The catcher appears well made and does not get hot like another reviewer mentioned.

Over the net, the Slingcatcher is a poor cousin to using Slingplayer on a mac/pc. With Slingplayer you can control the bit rate, telling the software to use the full extent of your available bandwidth. In my case 2,000kbps. With the Slingcatcher, you don't have any control and the device seems to want to use as little bandwidth as possible, and in my case usually 700kbps or less. This results in a far inferior image to what I can get with the Slingplayer. It's nice, but over the net, its not.
