"Fantastic Speakers!"

I just bought a new 27" iMac, and needed to get a new set of speakers. I had the JBL Creature II's with my last setup, and I thought that they were pretty good for the money. I wasn't too crazy about the sub sitting around, no matter how modern it looked.
I ran across these on another site, and then read the reviews here at Amazon and decided to buy. I just set them up today, and couldn't be happier. These speakers are very powerful for a desktop setup, and you'll hear your music and movies like you never were able to with a speaker/sub setup. They are a little on the large side, but they are very well built and look great sitting on my desk. M-Audio also gives you everything that you need to be setup in no time.
Couldn't be happier with my purchase. Go ahead and buy if you want a great sounding desktop speaker.

One of the best speakers I've owned.
A little pricey, but totally worth it.
The life like sound experience provided by these speakers is unbeatable.
Creative,JBL,Logitech speakers don't even come close.
Go for these monitors.

BBC monitors they are not. They are also not $1200 a pair. For $150 you get a reasonably accurate sound with plenty of punch for such small units. If you're looking for an upgrade from the usual computer speaker this is it; we're very happy with them.
I was using creative T20's with an M-audio sound card on my linux box. They were light years ahead of the crap I was listening to at the time.
I was itching for a change and heard good things about the AV40. I searched the web and read the reviews and went ahead and ordered a pair.
They have been up and running for a few hours now and they very nice. I am listening to Bill Frisell's Intercontinentals and its like I am hearing it for the first time.
There is more of a depth to the soundstage that the Creatives couldn't pull off. Pretty awesome. The acoustic instruments sound really good on these speakers. Later on I need to break out the Bach and Mozart : )
Not too big, have a nice weight to them and seem really well made. All the needed cables come with.
These are very good sounding speakers.

"Mac Pro Rockers"

For the last 20 years I have had a PC (IBM compatible) type computer. Since the first Soundblaster card was sold I have always had a Creative Labs soundcard installed in my PC. As the soundcards have evolved so have my speakers and for the last 9 years I was running a Boston Acoustic 5.1 system. This year I decided it was time to try a Mac and purchased a Mac Pro. The sound from a Mac Pro is stereo so I thought I would move to some nice sounding stereo speakers and as a bonus end up with less wires and no subwoofer taking up space. The M-Audio AV-40's have great reviews and size looked like it would fit my desk nicely so I thought I would give them a try.
Taking them out of the box, they are very solid construction. They were packaged well and arrived in perfect condition. First impressions are that they are nicely designed and easy plug and play.
Overall the sound is terrific. The highs and mid-range are really the sweet spot on these speakers. The bass is good and tight if you listen at reasonable volumes. There is a point where the bass gets a little mushy when cranked up to higher volumes which is why I am giving them 4 stars. I do like to crank up my music occasionally and the bass is a little soft when you do that. These come with a bass boost setting which I didn't find that I cared for but it is worth trying if you want to give a little extra thump.
One improvement I would like to see since these are mostly being used by folks with computers is an automatic power down or "sleep mode". I am sure they burn some electricity even resting because the power circuitry on the back of the left speaker that has the power switch gets very warm even when not using the speakers.
