The sound quality on this is excellent, esp. if you are used to older-generation tape recorders or any other portable device. However, most of my recording is acoustic guitar or voice, and there is actually a lot of hiss on the recording. With a rock band or even a loud acoustic ensemble, I would imagine that this is barely noticeable; however, if you are a classical guitarist, you might want to look for something higher end.

I plugged a 100-dollar Audio Technica mic into this unit, and I'd have to say that the on-board mic does a better job. Pretty surprising considering the entire unit only cost about 200 bucks at Guitar Center.

I purchased this item for two reasons - to record meetings as well as music. I have not used it yet to record music, but did try and record a meeting. I guess I should have spent more time working with it, because it did not record. I have since purchased a microphone, and recorded conversation - which worked fine. It picks up well, and does not seem to have a lot of background noise.

ive had tascam products for years, and they have another winning product here, every thing about it is intuitive, i dislike manuels, and like to keep my gear simple, so ill use it. set up couldnt be easier, turn it on get machine placed and hit record. and the over dub is super cool, as others have stated, ive overdubbed up to three tracks(first upright bass, second banjo, third, trumpet setting on korg kaossollater) for my ears, im in no way a professional, but it records my upright really really nice, esp when i use the reverb effect, and i like the effects are easy to access. another huge plus is the battery, which recharges w usb, or optional ac adapter, which is very cool. and when i got my first batch of recordings ready to put on my computer, i plugged in the usb, and it came up first time, paste it into media player, and burned, worked the first time, i have begun to use this just as much as my 8track, easy to use, clean recordings.

This is a solid recorder records Marching Bands and anything of that nature GREATLY, and guitars and basses too with the 1/4 input jack. I would buy this product again.

An absolutely amazing little device. Would have been worth it even if I had paid more. For something that offers so many features the controls are intuitively simple. Any criticisms drawn in comparative testing with other units are far too nuanced for my ear. An excellent buy!
