5 Star Rating  "Perfect 2nd notebook"2008-10-07
- Reviewed By User: A2V1GM542G7W2P
Finally got mine this past week; am thoroughly impressed by the convenience of having this notebook with its decent resolution, actual touch-typable keyboard, and very good battery life (I have the 6-cell version; gets 5+ hrs). The LED screen is beautiful, the built quality is solid, etc. Only two things I wished were different: 1) the glossy finish is a fingerprint magnet (I'm not talking about smudges, but clear fingerprints that I can probably lift off with tapes a la CSI); 2) the second SD slot (there are two - one as a media reader, the other as storage space) can probably be replaced with an Express card slot instead as there's no need for more storage space with the 160 GB HD.

I know it's difficult to install more RAM, but based on my usage so far, I think 1GB is perfectly fine for XP Home and the Aspire One's intended purposes.

Also, the often-cited missing Bluetooth was easily addressed with an Anycom BT adapter - it's so small it only protrudes no more than a few millimeters. (The metal USB connector part, unlike many small BT adapters, actually fully flush with the port; only a tiny plastic sticks out.)

Lastly, read a lot about the fan noise. I can't say that I really noticed any, and I'm quite observant. I can tell when the fan comes on, but there's almost on noise at all when it does. I'm guessing/hoping Acer has fixed the issue (I read that the noise was due to actual physical contact between the blade and other parts).

5 Star Rating  "Compact, decent performance, long battery life. "2008-10-06

Acer was probably the first company to offer this level of performance in a "netbook". With an Atom processor, 1gb of ram, a 160gb hard drive, a 6 cell battery and Windows XP home, it's a pretty credible unit if you don't mind a slightly small keyboard.

I already had a 17" Dell 9300, but after seeing the original eee realized I'd get much more use out of a laptop that was convenient to take along.

Goals were:
Small as possible with a keyboard I'd be able to touch type on.
Long battery life
Be able to run my SBIG astronomy camera.
Wireless Networking
decent performance for web, email, and running the camera.

I spent a couple months looking at what was available, and what was coming down the road. The eee 900 and 901 keyboards were just too small for me to be able to get used to. On line reviews brought my attention to the original aspire one. People were saying nice things about it's performance and build quality, and mentioned the keyboard was much easier to get used to than the eee, but complained of short battery life.

Then Acer announced this model would be coming soon.

I probably would have been OK with the linux version if it had the 6 cell battery. Linux is better than Windows for the internet, and I could probably have gotten software to run the camera. But windows XP meant the camera would run out of the box, and I wouldn't need to learn a new operating system. The hard drive seems much larger than I need, but it means I won't need to worry about running out of space.

Performance wise, it has more than enough power for my needs. It plays youtube and flash based videos better than my Dell over the wireless network connection in part because it gets a more reliable connection.

Five and a half hours seems like a realistic estimate of the battery life.

The keyboard is smaller than a normal one, but after a couple of hours I got to the point where my touch typing was reasonably accurate. The other compromise is the speakers - They're not going to fill a room with sound - but for one or two people in a typical environment, they're loud enough. I doubt there's room in the case for more substantial speakers.

Build quality is very good - certainly at least as nice as my Dell. The controls are intuitive, and overall I'm very impressed with how easy this netbook was to get used to.

And it is super portable. In round numbers, four of them stacked together would probably be about the size of a six pack of soda cans. Factor in the long battery life and you have a computer that's very convenient to bring almost anywhere.

This isn't the fastest, This isn't the cheapest, This isn't a macbook, dell xps, HP, ect. This is a Acer Aspire One Netbook. Price varies per retailer. I actually found my aspire one 160GB blue bundle of fun for 430 after taxes and shipping on a Canada website I trusted. If you look on amazon you will also see that it is listed by multiple retailers at different prices and some on preorder still. Nonetheless if you purchase a canada notebook you get a canada keyboard with is slightly different than the pictured one that I saw on some websites, also is taking me a little to get used too. All aspire one Touchpads are also different than standard notebooks, not just Canada's. Good thing I can deal with change unlike both our candidates who only like to talk about it... But I degress. no can not digress must move on. I couln't find any recovery media so first thing first after getting it. Call acer and request it. If they try and charge you call a different support number and ask for it to be sent out. I went email first then phone and they said they were going to send it . I'm waiting slightly impatiently because I feel it should be there to begin with. Not the first time this has happened to me though... with another company which I am not going to reveal.
This is a Netbook, this means no DVD/CD burner ect. 3 options 1: use a external DVD drive, 2 use a computer network take use of another dvd drive, 3 use iso ripping tools and transfer them to your pc and on your pc use a program such as deamon's tools to emulate the use dvd in a dvd drive. 1 option is easiest, most external dvd drives are plug n play. plus if you HDD partitions/Windows gets screwed up bad enough that the internal acer image is unable to restore then Reinstalling Operating systems is much easier with a dvd drive. good investment and can be used on other computers as well.
Processor, Atom n270 processor is a nice speedy little processor, It does what you need for school websurfing and very limited gaming stuff. Plus it is nice on power
Video, Intel integdrated video, just like a macbook, NOT ("mac book pro"), It takes some of your onboard ram which can only be upto 1.5 GB and is hard to upgrade but it does its own thing works great anyway.
160GB, I've seen people complain about a price hike on the HDD versions, If a company does what customers request (aka HDD and Windows) then they can up the price if they want; same with the retailers. yet this is a Good amount of space for a netbook, so no complaints there
have not tried .3 cam thing so no comment. For it's price and usablility I have yet to find anything I like better!! Plus if you check on the other earlier netbooks you will find they only have a 3 cell battery these new ones have a 6 cell battery and the last like 4.5 hours when I ran on it.

I received my new Acer Aspire One Onyx Black from Amazon/ANTOnline today. This thing is sweeeet. Slim, compact, fits easily in my backpack (smaller than average textbook). Boots up quickly, windows XP runs smoothly. Installed Office 2007 without any issues. WiFi connected to my network quickly, recognized my network printers and drives without any issues. 6 cell battery sticks out a little at the back but matches well with the body. The display rests on the extention of the 6 cell battery and prevents it to fall back. Keyboard and the touchpad is going to require a little getting used to. Excellent value for the price. Well done acer for raising the Bar of netbooks for others not only in quality but also on the price. Other netbooks in the market range from $500 (asus) to $1800 (apple, HP). Most of the software installed are trial versions. I uninstalled almost everything, including google desktop and toolbar. Mcafee comes free for a while but removed that too and installed Norton instead. This is a great little machine for the price. Highly recommend if you are looking for portability at a cheaper price.

I've had mine for 3 days now, and it's been really hard to put down and walk away from. Obviously the poratability of it is a big reason, but also because the 6 cell battery lasts so long that I feel like I can just leave it on for a while without feeling the need to keep powering it down or charging it all the time. Also, boot up and shutdown times are a lot faster than my regular laptop. br /br /The build is very solid. There is no flex in the screen or keyboard. I'm not sure how it would hold up if dropped on a hard surface, though. I hope I never have to find out. Keyboard response is nice. The keys don't feel cheap or like they would snap off if more than a little pressure is placed on them. Keys are close to regular size so typing on it doesn't take much getting used to, if at all. The screen is highly reflective and the outer coating has a glossy finish, which I don't prefer because it leaves fingerprints too easily and makes it difficult to see the screen in the daylight. But I'm willing to live with this simply because the computer has so much else going for it. br /br /This computer uses the 1.6 GHZ atom, which is the standard processor included with most ultraportables right now. I've noticed that I can run some moderately intensive software on it, but not smoothly for long periods of time. I tried loading some music software for which a 1.4 GHZ processor is recommended (Native Instruments Absynth 4), just to see how well it would run. I found that it was capable of operating, but it was easy to make the CPU spike if I played more than a few notes at once. Not that I was planning on using this a a music production tool, but I was interested in seeing what I could get away with in case I find myself stuck on an airplane or car trip with my Aspire One and a pair of headphones and want to play around with sounds a little bit. Native Instruments FM8 wasn't so processor intensive and operated much more smoothly. In short, I got about the best response I could have hoped for with the processor and soundcard included. Fairly functional for light doodling. br /br /Windows Media Player 9 was included in the software bundle, so I decided to upgrade it to Windows Media Player 11. I don't know if this was such a smart move, as version 11 may be more resource hungry. I was playing some mp3's while simultaneously updating my music library and the program started hanging on me after about 20-30 minutes. I closed and reopened the program and resumed what I was doing and after 5 minutes, the program again started to hang. By this point, I decided I had been testing the limits of this system for quite a while and the processor was running pretty hot by this point, so I decided to turn it off and put it down for a while. br /br /RAM-wise, it comes with 1 GB and is only expandable to 1.5. I've heard that it is difficult to reach the RAM slot and that it involves taking the computer apart, so I've decided that the marginal increase in memory is not worth the hassle, particularly since the limited processor would not allow you to run much, if any, software that would require more memory than you already have pre-installed in this little thing, so it seems like a moot point to add memory. br /br /The 160 GB hard drive is probably the largest capacity hard drive currently shipping pre-installed in the world of ultraportable PCs, and so far i've only seen it in the latest Aspire Ones. It's the traditional 5400 rpm HDD notebook drive. I like the higher capacity because it means that this computer can double as an additional storage drive to back up files, music, photos, etc. I would not have this luxury if I bought one of the other models on the market with low capacity solid state drives. br /br /I've read reviews of the older Aspire One model and it seems a lot of people had difficulty with the Wi Fi not finding an internet connection and also bios problems. I don't know if Acer addressed these issues in this newer model, but I have not experienced any problems with either so far. If I do, I'll update my review later. So far, this has been a great little toy. You just have to remember that it was not built for intensive computing or high performance, and manage your expectations accordingly.

Just got this little guy not too long ago. I have to admit that the Intel Atom processor is far faster than i thoought it was going to be. I am running XP just fine and have had absolutely no issues with speed when running MS and Open Office, IE7, etc. I'm even watching movies from Netflix with absolutely no problems! I upgraded the RAM to 1.5G however as another reviewer mentioned, it's not as easy as Acer should have made it. It required me dissasembling the entire case and fully exposing the circuit board. Typing is OK,but not great. The keyboard is tight but I can still manage to enter in text relatively quickly. Two main con's, there is no bluetooth and the supplied battery is only a 3 cell, with just over a 2hr life wtih screen backlight turned down all the way. Waiting for some longer battery life options, hoping to find some third party vendors selling soon! Otherwise, I am very happy with this purchase. I am finding that I am using it much more than I anticipated daily. At $350, plus the $25 for the extra RAM, its absolutely a BARGIN!

This little gem is perfect for travel, or just taking from room to room of the house. My wife and I keep ours almost exclusively on our couch or under our bed for access pretty much at our fingertips. The weight of this thing is incredible. I find the boot time to be plenty fast (use MSCONFIG to reduce some of the startup applications). We also discovered that although it doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, you can install CD-ROM based programs by networking another computer with this, so you can then access the CD-ROM drive of another computer using the Acer Aspire One. You'll have to "share" the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive of the other computer. After that, just insert the software disc and access it through the Acer. Presto, you can then install all your software on CD's without actually having to buy an external drive.
My ONLY complaint about this thing is that it is extremely difficult to upgrade the RAM from 1GB to 1.5GB. You actually have to remove the keyboard, facia, to get to the bottom side of the motherboard. A huge pain. There are about 3 videos on YouTube that actually show tutorials of people replacing the 512GB removeable memory chip, with a 1GB chip. It isn't easy, and unless you have some background in computer upgrades, I might forget about this upgrade altogether. That is the ONLY reason this computer didn't get 5 stars. Why Acer didn't do like every other laptop I've ever seen, and put a door for easy access to the memory slot is beyond me.
