| Before buying this Norelco 8240XL shaver, I bought the Panasonic ARC IV shaver. The Panasonic shaver was so loud that I was afraid to use it. I thought it might damage my hearing since it would be right next to my ear. Without even using it, I packed it up and returned it to Amazon. I then bought the Norelco 8240XL and it is 75% quieter than the Panasonic. The Norelco gives a close (not super close) shave and it is QUIET. I am happy with the Norelco. |

I had used Braun for years. Two diferent ones. Current one was a 5000 series Braun and had to replace the foil head almost once a quarter because it would cut a hole in it!! Very expensive and then add in the cleaning fluid for the cleaning system.
After a lot of research I bought the 8240XL. Although I have only had it for a week, I am impressed. It is very quiet, little hard to get use to, because my other shaver was that quiet, it was dead!!! I like the feel of the handle. I like how it hugs the chine and atoms apple. I shave my head and really like how it hugs my head as well. It appears to be really easy to clean with just running under water. Have been using it for over a week and no indication that I need to charge it.
Only complaint and why I didn't give this shaver a full 5 stars is, even with Electric Shave, I feel it could save a little closer, but that is really being picky and as my skin gets use to it more that may improve. But even if it doesn't I am still very happy with it. |

| I bought this shaver to replace a similar, older model. This unit is extremely quiet (a whisper) compared to my other (3-4 year old) model. The heads are also different and are much smoother going over the face. This model also has a "pivot" to the head which makes movement over the face and neck more comfortable. It is also much lighter. My only complaint is that the shave is not as close as my other shaver. I find that I have to press harder and go over the face much more to get that "smooth" look, otherwise, there will still be a slight stubble look to the face. The shave also does not appear to last as long and by the end of the day the face looks a little more ragged than compared to when I shaved with the other model, which tells me it's not cutting as close. It is very easy to clean and looks very modern. The pop out trimmer on this model is also wider than my previous model which makes trimming sideburns much easier. I would give it more stars if it cut better! |

A great razor without a lot of bells and whistles. Why pay 2 or 3 times more for, basically, the same razor with a few more lights? I agree that a low battery light would have been nice, but this isn't a big deal since the battery lasts a long time and can be charged in 1 hour. Plus, if you don't have an hour to wait around a quick 5 minute charge will get the job done (or you can use it corded.)
Now, as far as the shave goes it gives a very close shave with no irritation. It is a little faster than previous models but don't expect to cut your shaving time in half. I tried a foil razor once and it left a few stray hairs here and there which it refused to pick up no matter how hard I tried to get them. I switched to a rotary and I haven't had that problem since. I switched to electric razors a few years ago when my face just couldn't handle blades anymore; I thought I'd have to sacrifice the closeness of a blade for a healthier face but this hasn't been the case with Norelco, they have consistently given me blade close shaves.
I've had this razor for about 6 months now and couldn't be happier. I've read the reviews on the Arcitec and, honestly, can't see a good reason why I should pay 2 or 3 times for it when this one works so wonderfully. |

I Bought this because read that blades rotate at 13,000 rpm and the cheapie Norelco + Remingtons I tried rotated at much lower speeds and for me was the main problem. Not because it takes longer to shave but in the same way that a vacuum with too little suction would be with not taking too long as being the problem but rather unable to do the job properly at all. So having happily owned an 800 series Norelco from 15 yrs ago (simiarly priced when adjusted for inflaion + comparable product for it's time period) I bought this 8240XL because it said 'Speed XL' with of course SPEED being my main concern.
So my reveiw is this: If you don't remove the blades after every use and rinse them the shaver does not do a good job so that always needs to be done and although raiser can be rinsed under water for easy cleaning you'll want to pull out those 3 blades and individually rinse them which isn't too hard to do. The battery has good life and much better than my 15 yr old model ever had and it charges in 1 hrs time. Motor is quiet, heads pivot in a couple different ways. and shaving surface is good and the right size. The job it does is decent but I will be looking into whether Norelco offers upgraded replaceent blades when these where out.
I am satisfied enough with this shaver now but it won't blow you away so don't think spending [...] bucks will automatically be getting you something you'll be dancing in the streets about but it's decently good. I wouldn't have minded trying other shavers in this price range like the Remingtons to see how they compare and do suggest reading other reviews on simiarly priced shavers to see what's best.
Bottom line is I wouldn't return my 8240XL and I'm someone known to return things I'm not satisfied with so that will sum it up for me.
