This is a very good headset, I've had it for over a year with no quarrels, but there is a big thing to point out. You can get this headset with Socom Confrontation, for almost the same price!!!! If you look around there is a chance you could find Socom Confrontation and the Headset, for cheaper than the headset itself!! If you've never played Socom Confrontation, I recommend it, it's one of the most popular online games on the PSN. You're basically getting a free game with you're headset, or free headset with the game, how ever you'd like to think of it.

| I bought this thinking it would be the easiest to set up. I guess I was right as it installed easily. My complaint is the range. If I leave the room that the ps3 is in more than a few feet, it disconnects. It's not the most comfortable on you head and it could have been better designed, but it works. Oh, and no big deal, but all the observations above figuring in the price. I think the price reflects more that it is Sony's PS3 headset than a quality product. |

"Best Headset Ever" | 2009-10-11 |

This headset is the most reliable that I have used. I have gone through many cheaper headsets because I didn't want to pay for this one. But after breading and going through multiple cheaper headsets the total was well over what this one cost. I bought this official ps3 bluetooth headset and have no problems. It is extremely clear sounding and very comfortable to wear for long amounts of time. The huge mute button is extremely nice for when some enters the room and you need to talk to them but it is not important to the game.
Overall this is a must have for gaming. By the time you buy multiple third party headsets and they break, you would have spent the same but would have one that worked the whole time. |

I acquired this headset when SOCOM: Confrontation was first released and thought I was getting a deal by getting the game AND the headset for about $60. I couldn't have been more wrong.
As headsets go, I have worn a LOT of them. I've owned old-fashioned wired headsets, pre-bluetooth wireless that communicated with a little receiver you clipped to your belt and plugged into your phone, and of course... plenty of bluetooth sets.
Let me start by saying that you do NOT need this headset for a PlayStation3. In theory, ANY bluetooth headset will work with a PS3. (Granted some won't because bluetooth is inherently buggy technology.) Likewise, this headset will work with almost any bluetooth phone. However, my personal preference is to have separate headsets because I don't like pairing and unpairing all the time.
Having said that, let's talk about this headset. It is about as basic as basic gets. If all you need is basic, more power to you, but you'll find similar quality for less money with other sets. Try the Jabra BT4010, which as of this writing sells for half the price of the Sony. Heck, you can even find $10 bluetooth headsets if you really want to go cheap!
Apart from poor value, the Sony set is an awkward fit. It has only a thin rubber ring around a little plastic "barrel" that is supposed to stay fastened in your ear. Most other sets either have a "form-fitted" rubber piece or simply stay out of your ear altogether. This design gets uncomfortable quickly because A) the part that goes in your ear may not be the right size for your ear and B) the over-the-ear loop is made of cheap plastic as opposed to being rubber or having a rubber coating like many other sets.
The battery life is decent, but nothing to write home about. And the charging stand? It's cheap, very lightweight plastic that falls over very easily. If the USB cable is a little bit stiff, the natural tendency for it to curl may very well topple the stand.
As for sound quality... yeah, basic again. Sure, it works, but once again it is very basic. I felt like it didn't have a very good range of volume. Many times I had it cranked to the max and still could barely hear.
Since games are usually $60 and this headset came bundled inside a $60 game, I tried hard to find a reason to keep it, after all wasn't it "free"? In the end, I could find no redeeming qualities and returned it rather than allowing it to take up space in a drawer somewhere.
If you'd like some good places to start your search for another headset, here are a few:
Personally, I just can't get over the Jabra FreeSpeak BT250V. It's so comfortable I don't even notice it's there and it also has a vibrating/call notification feature, which is absolutely great for leaving your phone on the charger and keeping the headset with you at home or office. As of this writing, the Sony is ~$45 and the Jabra is ~$60. You may find the Jabra cheaper but even at $60 it's DEFINITELY a better value than the Sony!
If you're looking for a really great sounding bluetooth set (i.e. for listening to music), I've been really happy with the Motorola HT820. It has two speakers and wraps around the back of your head/neck. Fair warning, though- the Motorola sounds awesome but the speakers are huge and wearing this set makes you look like a total dork.
There are hundreds, maybe even thousands of bluetooth headsets out there so no matter which one you finally choose, please just don't make it this Sony piece of junk. Your dollars will go farther on something with the same quality/lower price, or same price/higher quality. |

"Great, but not perfect - unique PS3 functionality" | 2009-09-08 |

I picked this up on clearance, with Navy Seals Socomm. I didn't care about the game so much, just wanted the headset to replace an older, generic bluetooth headset I had. There are a lot of things to love about this headset for the PS3, and a few things to hate. Here's my list.
* High sound quality -- slightly better than the cheap generic bluetooth headset I was using before for listening, apparently significantly better on broadcast.
* Unique pairing with PS3 -- connect it to the PS3 with a USB cable for automatic pairing (fewer setup hoops for you to jump through -- no need to enter a PIN), and you get a few extras. There's an onscreen indicator for when you turn it on, off, or mute it -- which is a lot cooler than it sounds, as sometimes I wasn't 100% sure I'd turned my generic headset on or off. There's also supposed to be sound cancelling, so the audio from your PS3 won't be rebroadcast even if the headset picks it up -- as best I can tell, this works well, and probably contributes to the high broadcast quality.
* Long battery life
* Easy-to-use charging stand, or charge with USB port. LED indicator tells you if it's charging (blinking) or if it's fully charged (solid).
* Easy-to-use mute button.
* Your PS3 can easily switch between this headset and a different bluetooth headset (though it doesn't seem to want to do both at once -- not sure why you'd want to, though).
There are some things to hate about this as well.
* Larger, heavier headset than some headsets -- I can't quite wear it without the ear loop, as it's just a tiny bit too heavy. In addition, the earpiece is set just a little too far away from the end of the headset (the top, as you see it in the picture of it sitting in the box), so that the end of the headset hits the cartilage at the back of my ear. This makes it less comfortable to wear than the cheaper, smaller headset I had which I could use without the ear loop.
* Power button and volume buttons are harder to press than the mute. Not impossible, but awkward.
* Rubber cover for USB port is difficult to move so cord can plug in.
* Consistently beeps at you while turned on and muted, presumably to remind you you're muted. This can be slightly annoying if you prefer to mute it when you're not talking, and you only talk infrequently during a game -- but at least you don't have to wonder if your mike is "hot" or not.
All in all, I give this a high rating -- it's more expensive than the cheap bluetooth headsets, but the ease of muting, ease of syncing, and special onscreen notification of its status are enough to win a positive rating despite the price. The biggest downfall is how uncomfortable it is in my ear -- but it's not so bad that I'll switch back to the more comfortable headset I own, unless this one's out of juice after a long gaming session. |
