"High ink use is a deal breaker" | 2009-11-10 |

Unfortunately, this printer had not been out long enough for users to see its big downside when I read reviews before buying it.
I have no particular problem with its quality, ease of set-up or wireless function.
However, like other reviewers, I have found its biggest downsides are its high consumption of ink, the length of time it takes to prepare for a document or a print (all the time spewing ink) and the unavailability of the gray ink cartridge at local stores. One would have thought that Canon would have tried to distinguish itself by creating a more efficient and cost effective device, but that is not the case.
I would not buy this product again.

"Nice printer but sucks ink like a vacuum cleaner" | 2009-11-02 |

I have no complaints about this printers functions. Prints quality is excellent, scanning very good, etc. etc.
But it sucks ink like a vacuum cleaner. I've had many printers, this is far and away the worst by a large factor. I'm ready to send it back to Canon - not for replacement or repair, but just to make a statement. Ink is very expensive and the cartridges have been downsized on top of that. Shame on Canon - this warrants a class-action lawsuit, it's that bad. |

| I had read numerous reviews of this product and am aware it is out of production and superceded by the mp990 before I bought it. I am also aware that most buyers of the 980 felt set-up was a pain, the print speed poor and the "ready to print" time ridiculous after turn-on. Nevertheless, the photo reproduction and scanning are the best on the market and there is extensive support by Canon with a wide range of specialty papers. The gray-scale capacity afforded by the special gray cartridge is exceptional if you like printing black&white and restoring old B&W photos on archival quality paper. This printer is marvellous and I got this one new-in-box through Amazon for $147. At that price I can afford a second printer with a fax if I need it. Did I mention it does duplex printing as well and is wireless? If what you want is superb color and B&W prints, get this printer -- the new model is a lot more money for little more function because nobody is discounting it yet. |

"All-in-one printer" | 2009-10-28 |

We bought this printer to replace an HP flatbed scanner and a Lexmark stand-alone printer.
The setup went flawlessly and we were up and scanning/printing in minutes. We were most interested in the slide scanning feature of this printer (we have well over a 1000 slides we want the archive). The scanning and printing functions are great. But the slide scanning feature far exceeded our expectations. The software is intuitive and the quality of the scanned image rivals that of a download from a digital camera.
We highly recommend this product. |

"The good and the not so good of the MP980" | 2009-10-27 |

For the most part this printer, the Canon MP980, is more user friendly than my last 2 HP's. However a very annoying aspect is that it will not print when 1 ink tank is empty. The paper tray, front bottom, must be pulled out to reverse a sheet of paper or load, but that's insignificant.
It is quite fast and fairly quiet. Ink usage will be more cost effective. Ink useage will be efficient as long as I have enough tanks in reserve. I do print a great deal.
I find that I can scan to places I wish, for the most part, to go without great frustration. Copying goes without saying.
All in all, I have had better machines and, lately, much worse. |
