Latest 6 Reviews Here is what people are saying about the Marpac Sound Screen & SleepMate 980 Sound Therapy
"Very Pleased"

In the past I've typically used a medium size fan to create white noise so I could sleep better (I'm a very light sleeper) My wife doesn't really like the air circulation so I looked into a sound machine. After research and reading reviews I purchased the Marpac Sleepmate. Although I feel it's overpriced for such a basic gadget, it works very well. On the low setting it cancels out nearly all peripheral noise...the high setting blocks it all out.
I read a few reviews saying that it did not create enough white noise (in terms of volume) Unless you live next to a train station this will work perfect...by the way, I live 300 yards from a freeway and sleep with the window a little open...this does the trick.
"Loud but works"

I would not order this product again or recommend it to a friend. It is much louder than I expected, even on the quietest setting. My husband says it sounds like living inside a wind-tunnel. Not a compliment. It definitely covers many external noises but then again, being super loud that is not surprising. We have to crank the TV all the way up to hear over it. This machine will end up at the Salvation Army - we are still searching for a replacement.
"White Noise"

My daughter requested a "white noise" machine for her dorm room. She started college and was not being able to fall asleep for hours every night. I didn't have a clue what to buy but after review many other reviews on this product I decided to purchase this one. I was hesitant to spend this kind of money on it but I now have no regrets. My daughter (and her roommate) love this and it has worked out perfectly to help her at night. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good nights rest!
"Sounds like a fan"

This is a perfect alternative to a fan for the winter months. Our kids love falling asleep to a fan so I bought this item (recommended by a friend) and it is awesome. So small and perfect volume - it has 2 - kids adjusted fast. Would definitely recommend and plan on bringing with me when we travel.
"Excellent item!!!"

I love this sound machine. I bought one to put in the nursery when I had my second baby. It worked so well, that I bought another one for my toddler. They are great and block out noises. Both babies have been sleeping better since we got the noise machines. I am very pleased with my purchase. The SleepMate 980A is worth every penny!
"Does a good job blocking out apartment and street sounds"
I bought this mostly for my partner who prefers to sleep with a sound machine but I found it helps me some restless nights as well.
What it is: it's a fan, basically, with high and low setting and two variable slots/holes to adjust the sound generated. This small adjustment does actually change the sound quite a bit from more of a wind to more of a subdued hum, picture listening to the wind through a toilet paper roll then closing up the end of the tube to change the sound. This is not a tape loop machine like some other devices that play waterfalls or rain sounds. It's all generated by pretty simple mechanics.
Like my father I have a long history with insomnia. I'm thinking about picking one of these up for him for a gift as I never would have thought such a simple device could really help me fall asleep and would not have gotten one on my own volition but now that I have it I find it does indeed help me some nights. Though honestly I would prefer not to listen to it every night, especially if I have the entertainment of crickets and such to listen to.
We have a baby boy on the way and I'm hoping this will help him sleep through the night too. The mechanical nature of it seems a better choice for him than the aforementioned tape loop type machines. Although I am curious to see how he rates this compared to, say, non-repetitive musical white noise I plan to generate from synthesizers (hey a dad has to play with his own toys too!) Perhaps I'll append his review here when appropriate.
I didn't think I'd appreciate having this thing whir on all night long but it really has helped me and I'm not even the reason I bought it, so I'm rather sold.
This unit is well padded underneath to help keep whatever surface you set it on from rattling or resonating. You still may have to move it around a bit on a dresser/bureau if the resonance is too much. I find I have to set it over a cross bar (middle) to keep the bureau from resonating but that's not the fault of the machine it seems they designed it well to avoid this and I'm just nitpicky.
As far as blocking out background noise it seems to do real well at that. I recently came into the bedroom with my radio blasting NPR in the bathroom across the hall and I could barely hear the radio once I entered the room. It also has helped drown out the clomping from the horses that moved in upstairs and the rhythmic late night um ... construction ... that's going on next door.
And when the baby comes maybe I'll get one for all my neighbors too.
