I got my book way before it was expected,
the only defect (a small rip on the books jacket cover) was listed on the website before i bought it, they were very honest, it was otherwise in perfect condition. |

| I read several of the 1-star reviews. Many of them have valid points; one in particular was the lack of character development. HOWEVER, this novel was so entertaining I actually read it twice. A lot of people also mentioned the Twilight series. The only similarities I saw were the love triangle and Bella/Wanderer characters. It is slow in the beginning but picks up the pace towards the latter half of the novel. I hope Stephanie continues to write as I'm really looking forward to reading her next novel. Keep writing!!! |

"Such a good story" | 2009-09-16 |

| I know a lot of Twilight fans are kinda disappointed with The Host. It is a very different story and not so much for teenie-boppers (no offense to teenie-boppers). I loved the Twilight series and I equally loved The Host. I could not put this book down. I read until my eyes burned. It has a great story line and Stephanie Meyer just has a wonderful talent for sucking you in. It took a few chapters and some getting used to the strange world the author created, but by the time Wanderer is on her way to help Melanie...it gets so good! |

"Slows a bit at the end....and the big bow that ties everything together is somewhat disappointing..." | 2009-09-15 |

I just finished this book last night and, though I wouldn't neccessarily call it a disappointment, I will say that it left me...well, bored.
I love Stephanie Miller books because she is a phenominal story teller. She has the ability to really make the reader connect, almost immediately, with her characters. When I read Twilight, I was deeply connected to the characters in that book by page 70. She had me sucked in. So, when I saw that The Host was available, I jumped at the chance to get it for my Kindle.
I'm typically one to pick up a book and finish it within a few days, at most. But, with this book, I found myself bored often and would put it down for weeks at a time. It took me over three months to completely finish it. I hate leaving a book unfinished, so I pushed through.
Some parts are thrilling, while others are so-so. A lot of the suspense is drawn-out so much that it almost makes it anti-climactic. Too much dialogue waters down the climactic parts of the story and really waters down the most intense parts of "The Host".
There are definitely parts of the book that I liked, and it was worth reading completely through simply for the fact that an unfinished book is worth less than a completed one that bores you. Still, I was generally disappointed in the story. Wanderer is so much of a touchy-feely bleeding heart that it makes the book almost seem preachy. At the same time, she stays so far away from affection within the relationships in the book (maybe for the same reasons she did in the first three books of the Twilight series - they aren't married?) that they seem childish. And, even the worst of characters (Kyle, for example) don't have the morals to prevent them from beating a woman senseless, but they do have morals that prevent them from being physically intimate with women under 17? It's just inconsistent.
The most disappointing moments came at the end of the book, when a nice little bow wrapped everything up happily. In a setting where the human race is virtually wiped off of the planet, it's unreaslistic and really disappointing. I'm not sure if she was trying to set the book up for a sequal, but the fact that everything lined up perfectly in this hellish world within the book seemed ridiculous. I put the book down feeling...well...bored and unimpressed.
If you loved the Twilight series, and have that connection to Meyers, you will probably need to read it for yourself before you'll believe any warnings about this book. Don't expect anything near Twilight, though - or you'll be left pretty, well, bored.
Still, I give it 3 stars because I am such a huge fan of Meyers. She's an exceptional story teller and her ability to write is what kepy me going back to the book. I just think this novel was more of a miss - too long, too srawn out, too much dialogue...overally, too much.

I was absolutely taken by the story in this book. Being a fan of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series I was expecting good writing in this novel and Surprise! Surprise! I was not disappointed. One thing that I really treasure about Stephenie's style of writing is her vivid description of the emotional turmoil of her characters. Every time I finish a book of hers, I am struck with questions about my own emotional life. I wonder if it's as vivid as it is in the characters she describes.
This story was clearly the type of story that highlights how humans tend to see themselves. We think of ourselves as extremely emotional, irrational, having short lives, delicate bodies, etc. I found it fascinating how this was brought out when comparisons were made to creatures from other planets. I wonder in reality what is actually possible, in terms of the organic makeup of another intelligent life form. If it didn't have to be a mammal, what else could it be and what other materials could it be made of.
Great story! |
