Here is what people are saying about the Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, Book 9)
4 Star Rating  "Page turner, light read, lots of fun!"2009-11-19

I love this series and thought this book was one of the more interesting of the recent volumes. I really enjoy Eric/Pam/Bill and like the plot lines that keep them more engaged with the series. This book did not disappoint.

On the topic of series canon, I really didn't experience any "what?!?" moments with this book. I come from the Star Trek universe where canon is law and often ends up being a stranglehold on new ideas. I think Harris has a plenty good enough grasp on her own universe.

It's a great book, one of her best. Also, I got it super fast, love Amazon.

2 Star Rating  "This book was flat"2009-11-05

I really enjoyed all the first 8 books but this one felt flat. It never amounted to anything. Being a huge fan of the whole Sookie-Eric romance, this book was disappointing. Yes, I guess there is a love scene but after sooooooo much teasing in all the previous books I was hoping for a little romancing between these two rather than just plain sex. AND they still don't know what they feel for each other. This is starting to bore me. I hope that book 10 truly develops their relationship to an emotional level rather than mere carnal pleasure. Is there was a pledging/wedding, I guess vamparies don't hold any festivities to celebrate such occasion?

BILL--I truly believe that this Bill is being modeled after TrueBlood rather than the writer's original intentions for Bill. He has been so in the shadows and now he is overly heroic? Even as I started reading the book series AFTER watching the first two seasons of True Blood, I was hoping that the books would not be affected by what A. Ball has envisioned for the TV show. I soooo prefer the books so far. Also, I truly like the personality of Eric in the books (versus how they portrait him to be in the show).

I hope that book 10 is not a book that tries to 'align' itself with the True Blood show but the other way around. Nuff said...

As a new fan of Sookie Stackhouse books I found this installment to be the most fast paced! I started reading the series about 3 months ago and finished "Dead and Gone" this afternoon. I envy new readers of this series as the first time is always the best!

I had been a bit reluctant to purchase this novel because of the reviews saying its confusing...I didnt find it that way at all. I found it refreshingly fast paced and entertaining. There isnt time to be bored! If you love Sookie Stackhouse then this installment will not disapoint. I personally love the series and have enjoyed the journey that Sookie has undergone and look forward to the next installment! Keep them coming Charlaine Harris!

***This review contains spoilers!***

This book kept pace with the steady degradation of the series. What have been niggling annoyances are becoming big fat issues. The plot is cluttered to the point that it's often hard to keep up with. The large cast of characters is becoming gratuitous, until I almost feel like I need to take notes. The major climax of the story happened off-screen, as did multiple noteworthy character deaths.

I was excited for the chance to learn more about faeries in this book. Sadly, little about the creatures was revealed beyond cryptic hints of a literal separate faerie world, a concept that I found out of place in the SVM universe.

As a diehard Eric/Sookie fan, I was disappointed in the anti-climactic way that they finally hooked up. Their relationship seemed catawampus in this book, due in large part to the excuse of the blood bond. Sookie and Eric are great because of their constant battle of wits; with a magical deux ex machina in place, there is no reason for bickering. Because they wuv each other. After ten whole books of will they/won't they, they suddenly and randomly jump into bed together with no provocation, and they instantly become the disgusting lovey-dovey, cookie-cutter, lets-not-fight type of couple that kind of make me want to gag.

I've never been fond of Bill, but his transformation into a simpering Sookie fanboy in this book is insipid, to the point that I started skipping ahead whenever I saw his name. Seriously, dude is creepy. Were I Sookie, I'd get a restraining order.

While I find Jason's character deplorable, he remains the most three-dimensional and real person in the history of the series. He is cowardly, horrible, and hypocritical, and he keeps hurting the person who loves him the most (Sookie) in little, careless ways. Yet, upon occasion, when Sookie is in trouble, he's there to save the day. Only to run the hell away again as soon as possible. I've known many Jasons, and although he's an awful person, he's a brilliant character.

All in all, this book was a disappointment, but not so much to make me give up hope for future books. There's still hope that the flaws that have been developing can be fixed. I look forward to the next book, but if the series continues to decline at the same rate, I won't be looking forward to many more after than.

3 Star Rating  "Sookie sellout?"2009-11-03

Although I love the Sookie Stackhouse books, I was a bit unimpressed by the time I finished this one. I almost feel as if this one was churned out because of the show. There wasn't very good development of new characters and favorites from past books are hardly to be seen. I really feel Ms. Harris could have put a bit more effort into the book. If she continues with the series, I hope she returns with the engaging Sookie from I enjoyed from the previous books!
