Small Giants was a delightful read for me. It gave me hope that running a business doesn't necessarily have to be without a bigger purpose, instead it can be liberating if done right.
The author is brilliant in getting his point across and throughout the book I pondered endlessly over possible steps to create a 'Small Giant.' As much as that would be helpful I concluded that it would be near impossible. The key ingredient though I figured had to be the vision of the founding fathers and ofcourse the execution.
I took my time reading this book and several other books came in the way. Somehow though I put all the rest down to finish 'Small Giants,' I say give it a shot, it wont let you down.

I read a lot of business books. Some of them are informative, while others truly stand out as an inspiration of what "can be." Small Giants discusses the importance of building community within your organization and the those you touch. This has been an important theme with me of late, and the value that it brings is immense. The companies interviewed all reached a crucial tipping point where they had to decide whether to acquire, build and buy in order to grow immensely, or whether they should invest in themselves, making a conscious decision to stay small and focus on building a phenomenal product. The decisions of the owners and execs to focus on creating quality and a legacy was the differentiator that brought them true success. It's a great read, and is very enlightening.

During every class, my accounting professor in business school said, "The ultimate objective of capitalist enterprise is to increase the wealth of the owner(s)." He reminded us of that each week because the term "wealth" means different things to different owners. While most business books narrowly define wealth as profit, there is a wider view where "wealth" may encompass things such as customer service excellence; supporting a local community; providing gainful employment; creating a family legacy or a platform for philanthropy. This wider view is the focus of the book titled - Small Giants - by business journalist Bo Burlingham. The author looks at 14 privately held companies which eschew the traditional capitalist pursuits of pure profit and go-go growth for their own sense of wealth and purpose. Soundview recommends this book because it's a refreshing look at entrepreneurs who have a nontraditional vision for their company and pursue it aggressively while avoiding the traditional fast-track progression, M-and-A melees and executive exit strategies other organizations have followed. Small Giants introduces the reader to a unique breed of business owners who fully knew the range of options they could make for their companies, but instead chose to run counter to the conventional model of success to attain their personal definition of "wealth."
Bo writes case studies on a select group of successful Small Giants in America. Taken time to detail what makes these companies and often the founders such a success. He calls it their Mojo, it's the little details that make the difference between their success and just being another business in the crowd. I learned more about some of the companies that I was already familiar with and about new ones that I never heard of. Learning new ways to handle my business, employees, clients and shareholders. In the end the biggest lesson was never lose sight of why you are in business and remember that the business provides the method to achieve that goal.

What a great gift. My husband and I own a small business that thankfully is growing great! But we both want to be sure we don't grow too big. On ideas to keep the business small but make it GREAT, I bought him this book. He can't put it down. We have now even purchased two bookmarks and read it together. Great ideas and very motivational!
