What a great book! And how filmmaking has changed since the days when I was in film school, forbidden to shoot anything in video.

Today the tools of filmmaking are available to everyone. Artis knows what its like to be an aspiring filmmaker with a limited-to-none budget. He shows how to do it--how to get your resources together, how to plan and make your film, and the many possible ways for indie filmmakers today to get their work seen.

This is a terrific book that should be a basic text in every film school.

I am a self taught video maker and I was looking for a book about documentary making as it is what I'd like to do next. This is exactly the book I needed. The author runs down all the steps (from preproduction to distribution) and generously shares all of these things he obviously learned first hand. Each step (camera setup, lighting, sound recording as well as budget planning or crew hiring) are detailed and the information apply to the beginner as well as the advanced documentary maker. More importantly, the book brings the beginner enough knowledge to get going, start shooting and learn by doing which seems to be the best way to progress. Finally a book about filmmaking and filmmaking techniques laid down in a simple, fun, and entertaining manor. Anthony Artis has hit a Grand Slam with this book. I have always been interested in the filmmaking process but found other books and guides that couldn't explain things in a simple manor and other publications to be a tad overwhelming. I was so inspired and excited after reading this book, I emailed Anthony to thank him for this book and to my surprise he emailed me back. Anthony Artis is a fantastic teacher and takes all the ambiguity out of the process. I can't wait to read his next book!!! Buy Shut Up and Shoot. You'll be glad you did. I know I am! It is time for me now to Shut Up and Shoot!!!!

This book is absolutely SUPERB.

- clear, concise explanations.

- in depth. thorough.

- many, full color, glossy images to demonstrate points

- to the point. no filler.

- enjoyable to read. layed out interestingly.

- gives you a GREAT starting point for making your doc.

This is not for advanced doc makers. This is for newbies who know nothing about making a doc. Read this and you'll be ready to go. You will not be an expert but you will know enough to get things started and an excellent foundation from which to build your doc making skills upon.

Can't go wrong with this.

I liked this book so much that I made sure to get it back from my boyfriend after we broke up. Just the "Basic List of Post-Production Elements" is worth the price of the book. Artis demystifies tech talk and shares hard-won tips so you can avoid mistakes.
