This is an excellent product but I have always been a Samsung fan. Here is the real news of this purchase, tho, Amazon performed like a business would have years ago, maybe even better. I won't go into details but this made me a permanent Amazon customer. Goodbye to TigerDirect and all the others, however, I might use those company's prices to keep Amazon honest because I don't want them to get too comfortable.

When this player works, it works well. However, it rarely works without a lot of "adjusting" of its core settings. I have yet been able to play a DVD and not had to reset the machine to be able to read it. This is really annoying. And then when it is actually able to read the DVD, it will constantly hang and stall till you just want to scream. And, yes, I have certainly called Customer Service many times and, while helpful, they do not see that my experience is unique OR anything out of the ordinary. What to do? Easy! Get another DVD player that works!
I bought this DVD player because I wanted something that would play CD's and MP'3 well,my previous player a JVC did well with movies but would take forever to load a CD or an MP'3 disk, it would skip occationally especially with any kind of movement in the room or when I played the stereo too loud...So far I am very impressed with this player it loads quickly has excellent sound quality with lots of detail and doesn't skip, it also plays movies with lots of detail and quality.

Upconverting DVD players are the way to go...no need for BluRay. This unit does just fine, and is very cost effective. Only rated it 4 of 5 because it didn't turn on one day; probably was overheated by DVD sitting on top of it. I swapped them, and created an air gap, and now it works fine.
I would be *very* interested to speak to a Samsung representative on this product.
I recently purchased it and let me tell you what an utter disappointment it was: firstly, my reasoning for purchasing this dvd player was 1080p upscaling. I have a Samsung TV, I already have a top-of-the-line first-generation Sony DVD player. The Sony DVD player was very expensive when we purchased it, but it is still functional. The menus on this new system (1080P9) are *great*. The layout is easy, it automatically tunes your Samsung LCD-TV to it when it turns on, and turns back on the TV when the DVD player goes off.
All my complaints are about the picture quality which is why I bought it. The update is painfully slow on the unit that shipped to me. Someone running in a movie will leave barred (as in horizontal line) trail of update. A full movement will result in major distortion.
I watch a lot of foreign movies, and the subtitles on this device when in 1080p mode are so slow to update, it is distracting. Even in progressive mode, the update seems interlaced. You can see the subtitle being filled up. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is with my unit. Or why, this problem has such steller reviews but performs so poorly out of the box for me. But, this is really not usable for me, never mind recommendable.
