After reading the reviews on this infrared thermometer and comparing it to the others offered here on this site, I bought the Mastercool. I am very pleased with it. Not only did Amazon beat its estimated arrival date by three days, the package arrived in great condition. The carrying case is heavy duty and it also includes a very usable thermometer.(A bonus I didn't know was coming).
The device itself is very easy to use, and with the push of an external button, you can toggle between Fahrenheit and Centigrade readings. The Mastercool is light, fits the hand well, and is very easy to aim at anything you want to know how warm or cold the object is. It is consistent in its readings, obtaining the same temperature within tenths of a degree from one reading to another (eg..several readings of my refrigerators and freezers taken several different times).
It is very useful in the kitchen for determining temps of foods as they cook and how hot my stove burners and oven is running, things I've always wanted to know but didn't have a good way of measuring them. I cannot wait to test it on my Big Green Egg!
I am using this thermometer to find air leaks all around my home as the temperature falls in order to repair them. I also believe it will be very useful on my RC model airplane engines to determine if they are running too hot or too cold (lean or rich). I want to try it on automobile tires as a quick way of determining a low pressure tire.
I believe this thermometer was the best in its class and for the price, and it was definitely a great bargain. Since I am not conducting scientific experiments with it where absolute critical accuracy is needed, I believe this tool, for the vast majority of us, will fill the bill quite nicely for the uses we can put it to around the home or business. |

This is a wonderful product that works just exactly the way it's supposed to -- but that I had some doubts about when I ordered it.
Put your heavy pancake griddle over a couple of burners and turn on the heat. After a couple of minutes point the thermometer at part of the griddle and pull the trigger. A red spot appears on the griddle (the laser in action) and 253 appears on the screen. Point it at another part of the griddle and pull the trigger again: 289. Turn down one of the burners a smidgeon. Two minutes later you have readings of 372 and 368. Ah, but one edge of the griddle is 388 and the other edge is only 295 -- push the griddle a little bit to the left to equalize the heat underneath. A minutes later: 397 at one end, 388 in the very center, and 401 at the other end. Turn the heat down a touch to stabilize things, grab your bowl of batter and start putting pancake batter onto the griddle. A couple of minutes later you have the most perfectly cooked pancakes you've ever cooked.
On my new outdoor barbecue grill, which has an "infrared searing grill", the thermometer will show 974 degrees on the heating element and, say, 856 degrees on the metal grill just above it. Wanna grill a quick burger? Now you know that the temp. is just right....
A wonderful, wonderful product! |

This is the first infrared thermometer I've owned. I bought this one because of other online reviews I had read. I purchased it for some automotive tuning work. The product arrived within a week from ordering it. The case the thermometer comes in is a durable hard plastic. When I opened it, I saw that they had also included a nice stainless steel and glass manual thermometer as well. The infrared thermometer is a sharp looking grey and blue, two tone unit. When you pick it up it has a nice sturdy feel to it. Almost immediately, I started pointing it at all types of surfaces to see what their temps were. This product is everything I wanted in a surface temp gauge.

This product is exactly as advertised. I thought that I'd be able to point it at my forehead and take my temperature but didn't take into account that my skin temperature is lower than my core temperature. Once I get used to normal skin temperatures I will be able to use it instead of standard thermometer =)
It's great to let kids and friends play with. Being able to point this at something and get an accurate temperature reading (both ºF and ºC) is at first a novelty and a very useful tool in the long run. There is no on-off switch for this, you just point it and squeeze the trigger to get a reading and it turns itself off after you're done.
The guys in my shop got a real kick out of being able to see that the rocks outside in Iraq are 140ºF today. |

I haven't fully utilized this unit yet but for what I did use it for, it's great. I can discern the difference between my hardwood floor temp and my carpet and in winter I'll see if it pays to keep the carpet as insulation for my floor or rip it up. I plan to check out the outside temp of the house at certain spots then the inside and see how much heat is getting inside. Ditto with the ceiling and the hot attic. I've already seen some temp differentials on some walls inside. This is an inexpensive and valuable tool to have.
