Here is what people are saying about the Netgear SPH200W Wi-Fi Phone with Skype
3 Star Rating  "Battery power info was a lie"2009-09-27

The battery life is horrible. After a few hours it shuts itself off if you dont use it. I was using it at home so I wouldnt have to go to the computer to take calls and it sometimes seemed that it was unreliable. Overall I like the concept of the phone. It is definitely not worth the $300 I paid for it though. For that kind of unreliability and battery problems, it is worth under $100.

4 Star Rating  "Great Skype handset"2009-09-18

Having a great time with Skype, now that it is not tethered to a computer. This way the phone sits on a desk, just like a regular phone, and I answer as needed. It also roams about the house which is nice. Very reliable (as long as the internet is up) and I had no trouble logging onto my own household wireless network.

The allure of an always-on Skype phone is that it can accept phone calls even when the desktop PC is off. Unfortunately, this phone doesn't work for that purpose because it will randomly log out, disconnect, and even forget login credentials. When that happens, people can't reach you.

For outgoing calls, this phone is OK, but for those, you might as well use the desktop PC: you get a better user interface and better sound quality.

It does what it claims to do. However, no browser, so you can't connect if required to enter user ID and password. There's lag time when talking, and you can't text. I don't think it was worth 150 dollars.

5 Star Rating  "Better than Expected it realy Works without Tinkering"2009-08-20

Yep surprised! It realy works

I had already installed in my Ohio home the GE wireless Detc 6 (4phones and distribution wireless conection to the router and regular phone service)
It worked but took some effort and configuration issues. Still works very well with a unique ring for the Skype Calls and Skype-In number calls and has an auto set (to skype)for long distance outgoing calls. (Skype In Out is where you purchase a local number from Skype for $30 dollars per year)

So I went ahead and took a chance on the Netgear Skype independent WiFi Phone.
It works! No hassel finds the strongest open connection and connects and signs in and walla the contact list is aboard fast. Direct dials and Skype contacts.

Easy to navigate but difficult to grasp the concept of everything contained on this little device. I imagine that the reason for low sales (reported they might discontinue) it is a knowlege based device. First you must have a Sype out and In number ($30.00 per year with unlimited min plan $3 per month) Cheap! Voice mail is included with the package with internet alert.
You do NOT need a computer on with the choices decribed above.

Here is the advantages I found so far:

1.I can take my phone with the charging stand to the beach house for the summer and use it as my long distance service and cut my phone services to the min.
2.Packed my phone to Bermuda for 2 weeks and made free calls to anywhere from the
home we were staying. (internet open connection) Using a non global and even then there is a roaming tarrif of $1.90 per min for CDMA cell phones and slightly less for G3 connections. People must know your ordinary Skype in number 10 digit with the 1 as the US contry code to reach you by phone but you can dial up a storm to any phone anywhere for nothing or pennies depending.
3. The hand unit tells you who is on line in the PC skype world of friends on their computer and you can ring them up also. (symbol next to contact just like the computer view on the small color screen)
4. You do not have to leave youself open to the world on this portable, and I only let computer skype people on my contact list. All others are trunkated.

Again, you need to do little to set up this tiny color screen baby with its own charging cradle. It has a Li Ion battery like cell phones and provides hrs of talk time and standby time if you travel to open wi fi sites. (I find this not workable finding open sites)

The price point of the product is now affordable from the original $219.95 Price.
The units can be purchased for as much as 45-50% off the orginal price on line.

If you move about the globe this is great option and will pay for itself over a short time.

Good luck. I found mine on Amazon

2 Star Rating  "Bad mic ruins otherwise wonderful device"2009-07-16
- Reviewed By User: A1ZSRBLATM516P
I've used this device as my primary phone for about two years. I had a problem with the device needing to be restarted every day because of some unknown error, D-Link was good enough to replace it. I've always suffered choppiness in the calls, especially for my voice cutting out on the other end. From what I can tell, the mic just isn't strong enough. Its reception is only average, sometimes cutting out for split seconds during calls. Also, never plays an entire voicemail message, seems like it only partially buffers. The deal breaker for me was calls that are impossible to continue because the other end was getting 1/3 of what I was saying. I was unpleasantly surprised by my experience, given the high reviews it got. Skype is great, this phone is not. Do yourself a favor and get something else.
