We've had the strdh700 a little over a month. We're not audiophiles, but we think it sounds great.
My only issue is the auto calibration that other seem to love. I first set up as 5.1 system(until I got
other speakers wired). That auto calibration ended with errors on the back and side speakers). After
drilling holes in floors and running wire in the basement to side speakers, tried to Auto calibrate.
Got errors on side and back speakers. Moved the mic, same error. Took out some furniture, got the same errors.
Moved the speakers(with furniture still out), still getting side & rear speakers out of range errors.
Still sounds good, wonder if it could be better if I could get the speakers calibrated. I have not tried
to do that manually, guess I should suck it up and give it a try. Running sony kdl46xbr8, strdh700 with
Onkyo sks-ht540b speakers.

This system was for my room with the idea that one day it might be my own living room entertainment system. This system comes with its own self calibration, and is capable of 7.1 surround out of the box. Got a 200 watt down blast Yamaha sub-woofer and truthfully have not had a chance to use it at full capacity, but why would anyone want to. I could light up a backyard with this system if I wanted. At full blast I can clearly hear this system throughout the house.
I am sure this system is not as nice as some of the more expensive systems, however, this equiptment is totally capable of taking care of any of your in house listening enjoyment. So, unless you are a professional and have to entertain a ball room, you will not go wrong with this system. As for the three on the set up of this system. It is a stereo system, setting it up is always going to suck. You have a load of wires and jacks to hook up. You want decent sound, you are going to have to do the hoof work.

Have all Sony components except for Direct TV HD/DVR. HDMI works like a charm. The Sound leaves a little to be desired but Its ease of use and hookup outweigh that minor flaw.
"Excellent receiver with complicated set-up"

The sound quality is excellent -- once you get it set up. This is definitely not plug and play. It takes a good deal of manuevering through the systems menus in order to select the speaker combination and sound options. Just be sure to read the manual before attempting to listen to any sound source. After that, it's worth the effort.

I bought the STR-DH700 and have had it or a week or so and so far am very impressed. I researched a lot and couldn't find any recievers comparable in specs and ecspecially price. I was surprised hoe many other recievers had HDMI but you still had to get a seperate cable for audio, its like whats the point of having HDMI inputs at all then. With the STR-DH700 it does it all and so far so good. The only down side that I could say which is not a big deal to me is the lack of multi-room capability but over all I have been very pleased with this reciever and for 199.99 there is no way you can beat it!

My A/V Receiver was a bit difficult to set up. I connected it to the Bravia Sony TV with Bose surround speakers. The speaker calibration was very good (my speakers are not in ideal locations). With the receiver connected to the TV changing Inputs takes a second or 2 and seems slow compared to just using the TV. I am using a Harmony remote and TIVO. Increasing the volume is slow also. Unfortuantely different stations have different sound levels so volume is used often. Just hitting volume up once doesn't change the volume. You have to hold it or hit the button several times and watch the display. Overall, I am happy with the choice. Nothing is perfect these days and everything seems more complicated than it needs to be. Complication is the price of so many options.Sony STR-DH700 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver (Black)
