I have been using Microsoft Streets and Trips for many years. This is still my preferred mapping software for the following reasons :
- Ease of use
- Accurate and up-to-date information. The program constantly checks for the latest updates for route planning
- Information for nearby places (such as restaurants and gas stations..which are great while I am on a trip)
- Free coupons (there is a catch. You get a 14 days/ 25 coupons free trial but then have to pay $30 annual fee)
- excellent customer support. I contacted support once for installation issue. They would continue to follow-up days after to make sure my problems were corrected.
What I would like to see for future enhancements :
- allows exporting of maps to PDAs
- yellow pages for business reference
All in all, this is a great piece of software for my desktop and laptop.

I have used Delorme Street Atlas for years and prefer their interface. Roads and routing are about the same. I guess it is all in what you are used to.
In this day and age where we have just about every kind of mapping program available to us via the web or even on Smartphone's, why would we need a standalone software map program? That was my mindset when getting into Microsoft Streets & Trips. While I still find many of its features on par with the free web mapping options, it's trip planner option makes it worth the investment.
Microsoft's Streets & Trips has a very easy to use interface. All of your mapping and trip options are well labeled and are easy for the most novice users. The trip planner was very fun and exciting to use as we could schedule side trips to take on our way to our main destination. While it was nice to have an option to send info to your mobile device, I think it would be great to have a full, mobile version of this problem.
If you want to plan a road trip with many stops, this is the best option out there. If you just want some basic mapping options, your best bet is the free online mapping programs.
With online apps like Google maps and Yahoo maps and also GPS makes you wonder the utility of Microsoft Street and Trips. This software helps you plan trips and also supposedly compliments your GPS by being able to send the info to your mobile device. I will give an update once i figure that feature out. It does make it easier planning trips so highly recommended
"GPS, Google maps, or Microsoft Streets & Trips?"
I admit that I'm a gadget geek and I like my TomTom GPS Navigator. No, I don't use it to get around my small town (unless I'm looking for a new address), but I use it on road trips. And if I'm at my computer and I want to see a quick route from point A to point B, I open up Google Maps.
And then there's Microsoft Streets & Trips. I owned an older version (2000?) before getting 2009, and I've always enjoyed the way it let me plan a trip in more detail than I can do with either the TomTom or Google Maps. My favorite feature isn't very exciting but it's incredibly practical: If you have an internet connection, S&T goes out and gets information about road construction to help you plan your trip. I made an all-of-a-sudden trip last Christmas and didn't have time to plan it out, and our route took us to a bridge that was closed for repairs and due to re-open the next day. If we'd planned the trip with MS S&T, we could have routed around that detour and saved ourselves a couple of hours.
A GPS device and MS Streets & Trips both serve different purposes (so do Google Maps and a paper map). For detailed planning before a trip, you can't go wrong with MS S&T.

I'm satisfied after using the program during a 2500 miles trip with my own route. During the search for an address do not fill the text field next to the search icon on the toolbar and then fill the pop-up window with the address, the result will be null or something like: "census data". Just click on the toolbar search icon then fill the address details on the pop-up window. It could be a perfect purchase for an individual that doesn't want to expend $100s in a GPS device that later will be stored in a drawer until the next trip.
